Its U.S. launch price started at $399 for GPS and $499 for GPS + Cellular. It was Apple’s 2020 flagship smartwatch, introducing the Blood Oxygen sensor and app, the faster S6 chip, a brighter always-on display, an always-on altimeter and the U1 Ultra Wideband chip. Apple’s launch announcement provides the historical dates, features and starting prices.
Apple no longer sells Series 6 new, but it is not simply obsolete. As of August 10, 2026, Apple lists Series 6 as compatible with watchOS 26.6. A used or refurbished model can still be a capable, relatively inexpensive Apple Watch, but battery condition, Activation Lock, cellular compatibility and the remaining support runway matter more than the original specification sheet. The sensible 2026 verdict is: buy one only at a clearly discounted price and with a healthy battery, a return window and proof that it can be activated with your iPhone.

What Apple Watch Series 6 was
Series 6 was the sixth-generation numbered Apple Watch and the successor to Series 5. It occupied the top of Apple’s 2020 Apple Watch range, above the first-generation Apple Watch SE that launched at the same time. The SE offered a lower-cost entry point, while Series 6 added Apple’s newest health hardware, the S6 system, an always-on display and other flagship features.

Apple Watch Series 6 release timeline

| Series 6 retail availability | September 18, 2020 |

| Series 6 discontinued | After Series 7 replaced it; exact sell-through timing varied by region and stock |
Apple’s launch announcement confirms the September 15 announcement and September 18 availability dates. The watch debuted with watchOS 7, which added or expanded features such as sleep tracking and Family Setup. Family Setup availability depended on country, carrier and configuration, particularly for cellular service.
What Series 6 introduced
Blood Oxygen sensor and app
Blood Oxygen was the most distinctive new health feature. Series 6 uses red and infrared LEDs together with photodiodes on the rear crystal to estimate blood oxygen saturation. Apple designed the app to measure levels from 70% to 100%, either on demand or in the background while the user is inactive, including during sleep.
That does not make Series 6 a medical diagnostic device. Apple says Blood Oxygen readings are for general fitness and wellness, not for medical use or medical decision-making. Fit, movement, skin contact, temperature, tattoos, circulation and other conditions can affect a reading. Availability also varies with country or region, age, software and model configuration. Apple’s Blood Oxygen guidance explains the feature and its limitations.

There is an additional U.S. qualification. Apple’s current restriction note applies to Apple Watch models purchased in the United States on or after January 18, 2024, with part numbers ending in LW/A. That should not be presented as a blanket restriction on every Series 6. On affected models, data analysis occurs on the paired iPhone and results are viewed in the Health app. Check the exact model and purchase market before assuming the feature will behave the same way everywhere; Apple’s model-identification page and Blood Oxygen support page are the relevant references.
Faster S6 system
Series 6 introduced the S6 SiP, a 64-bit dual-core processor. Apple claimed that it was up to 20% faster than the previous generation and that apps could launch up to 20% faster. Those are Apple’s launch claims, not an independently measured performance benchmark. In 2026, the S6 remains usable for notifications, workouts, apps and watchOS functions, but newer Apple Watches generally provide more performance headroom and a longer likely support runway.
Brighter always-on display
The always-on Retina LTPO OLED display remains one of Series 6’s practical strengths. It reaches up to 1,000 nits, and Apple claimed it was up to 2.5 times brighter outdoors with the wrist down than the Series 5 display. Series 6 also allowed certain controls and complications to remain accessible without fully waking the screen. The always-on behavior is particularly useful for workouts, timers and checking the time without an exaggerated wrist raise.
Always-on altimeter
The barometric altimeter continuously updates elevation rather than only reading it when the display is active. It works with GPS and nearby Wi-Fi networks, and Apple said it could detect elevation changes as small as one foot. That makes it useful for stairs, hiking, workouts and elevation-related complications, although real-world accuracy depends on conditions and calibration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsU1 Ultra Wideband chip
Series 6 includes Apple’s U1 chip and Ultra Wideband antennas. Apple positioned the chip for short-range spatial-awareness experiences, including future digital car-key applications. The presence of the U1 does not mean that every later U1-based feature works on Series 6; compatibility depends on the particular feature, watchOS version, iPhone, car or accessory.
Design, sizes and materials
Series 6 uses the familiar Apple Watch rectangular case in two sizes: 40mm and 44mm. The 40mm model is smaller and lighter, while the 44mm version provides more room for text, touch targets, complications, workouts and messages. Both are 10.7mm thick.
| Case | Height | Width | Depth | Display area |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40mm | 40mm | 34mm | 10.7mm | 759mm² |
| 44mm | 44mm | 38mm | 10.7mm | 977mm² |
| Case material | 40mm weight | 44mm weight | Display crystal | Connectivity availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminum | 30.5g | 36.5g | Ion-X glass | GPS or GPS + Cellular |
| Stainless steel | 39.7g | 47.1g | Sapphire crystal | GPS + Cellular |
| Titanium | 34.6g | 41.3g | Sapphire crystal | GPS + Cellular |
Weights are for the case without the band. Aluminum is the lightest and most common used-market version. Stainless steel is heavier and uses a sapphire front crystal. Titanium is lighter than stainless steel but generally less common and more expensive on the used market. The material changes weight, finish and display-glass construction; it does not change the 32GB capacity or the core S6 platform.
Colors and editions
Aluminum Series 6 was available in Silver, Space Gray, Gold, Blue and (PRODUCT)RED. Stainless-steel versions came in Silver, Graphite and Gold. Titanium versions came in Titanium and Space Black titanium.

Apple also sold Nike, Hermès and Apple Watch Edition titanium variants. Actual combinations depended on the case size, GPS or GPS + Cellular configuration, band, country and remaining retailer stock. A marketplace listing that says only Series 6 is incomplete until those details are confirmed.
Health, fitness and safety features
Series 6 combines the Blood Oxygen hardware with the following sensors and software features:
- Blood Oxygen sensor and Blood Oxygen app, where available.
- Electrical heart sensor and ECG app, where available.
- Third-generation optical heart sensor.
- High- and low-heart-rate notifications.
- Irregular-rhythm notifications.
- Cardio fitness and VO₂ max-related tracking through supported watchOS features.
- Sleep tracking and Cycle Tracking.
- Noise monitoring.
- Activity, workout and movement tracking.
- Fall Detection and Emergency SOS.
The ECG app requires compatible software and is regulated region by region. It is not intended for people under 22, and irregular-rhythm notifications are not designed for people already diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. These features can provide useful wellness and screening information, but they should not be described as universal medical diagnosis or as a substitute for professional care. Apple’s technical specifications and health-feature guidance contain the applicable limitations.
Emergency SOS on a GPS-only watch requires a nearby iPhone, or a known Wi-Fi network with Wi-Fi Calling configured. GPS + Cellular models can make emergency calls away from the iPhone where the feature and network are supported. Cellular service, international emergency calling and roaming depend on the country, carrier, plan and model. Do not assume that a cellular Series 6 works identically on every network.

Apple’s official battery claim was up to 18 hours, based on testing with preproduction hardware and prerelease software. Runtime varies with cellular use, workouts, signal strength, configuration, software and battery age. Apple also said Series 6 could reach a full charge in under 1.5 hours under its test conditions. A six-year-old unit may perform very differently from a new one.
Water resistance is not waterproofing
Apple rates Series 6 for water resistance to 50 meters under ISO 22810:2010. It is intended for shallow-water activities such as swimming in a pool or ocean, not scuba diving, waterskiing, high-velocity water or deep submersion.
Water resistance can diminish with age, impact, cracked glass, worn seals or a repair. Apple does not describe the watch as waterproof. With a used Series 6, especially one that has been opened or repaired, swimming should be treated as a risk rather than a guaranteed use case.
What came in the box
The original package contained the watch, a band or loop and a 1-meter Magnetic Charging Cable. A used or refurbished listing may instead include a compatible third-party cable, no power adapter, a replacement band or no original packaging. Confirm the exact contents before comparing prices.

Original U.S. launch prices
| Configuration | Starting U.S. launch price in September 2020 |
|---|---|
| GPS | $399 |
| GPS + Cellular | $499 |
These were starting prices, not the price of every Series 6. The final launch price rose with a 44mm case, stainless-steel or titanium construction, Nike or Hermès branding and the selected band. Cellular also brought an ongoing carrier-plan cost for users who wanted independent calls, messages or data.
The $100 difference between the starting GPS and Cellular models is therefore not the full ownership difference. Cellular buyers must also check carrier eligibility, regional model compatibility, activation requirements, plan charges and the effect of cellular use on battery life.
What Apple Watch Series 6 costs in 2026
There is no current official Apple new-product price because Series 6 has been discontinued. It is now sold through used, refurbished, excess-stock and marketplace channels, where condition and stock can change quickly.
As a dated market snapshot, refurbished Series 6 listings observed during research in 2026 began at roughly $110. Back Market showed examples around $111 for a 40mm GPS aluminum unit, $114 for a 44mm GPS unit and $118 for a GPS + Cellular listing. Best Buy search results also showed refurbished examples around $109.99, although many individual listings were sold out. These are marketplace observations, not a market-wide valuation or a promise of current availability.

- Aluminum, stainless steel or titanium case.
- Return period and warranty.
- Activation Lock status.
- Carrier compatibility for cellular models.
- Included charger, band and power adapter.
- Whether the seller guarantees that ECG and Blood Oxygen hardware function where those features are available.

Software support and iPhone compatibility
Current support status
As of August 10, 2026, Apple lists Series 6 as compatible with watchOS 26.6. Apple released watchOS 26.6 for Series 6 and later on July 27, 2026, with bug fixes and security updates. This confirms current support; it does not guarantee that Series 6 will receive every future watchOS release or every feature introduced for newer hardware.
There is an important difference between the original pairing requirement and the requirement for the latest software:
| Situation | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Original Series 6 setup and launch software | iPhone 6s or later running iOS 14 or later |
| Updating Series 6 to watchOS 26 | iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE third generation or later, running iOS 26 |
An older iPhone may therefore be able to pair with a Series 6 running older software but not update it to watchOS 26. Apple Watch setup is iPhone-based, so Series 6 is not an Android-compatible smartwatch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf an update will not install, Apple’s current instructions require the watch to have at least 50% charge, the iPhone to be connected to Wi-Fi and the watch to remain on its charger. If necessary, delete the downloaded update from Apple Watch app > My Watch > General > Storage, then try again. Insufficient storage, low battery, unstable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, a damaged charger or a corrupted update file can all cause failures. See Apple’s watchOS update and compatibility guidance.
Vintage, obsolete and service status
Apple’s service-status page dated June 16, 2026 listed Series 3, Series 4 and Series 5 in the worldwide vintage Apple Watch list. Series 6 did not appear in the worldwide vintage or obsolete lists at that time.
Apple defines a product as vintage when it has been discontinued for more than five years but less than seven years, and obsolete when it has been discontinued for more than seven years. Apple says service and parts are generally available for at least five years after the company last distributed a product, subject to parts availability, local requirements and regional service policy. That does not guarantee a battery replacement or repair for every Series 6 in every country. Check availability for the specific model and location through Apple’s service and vintage-products policy.
GPS versus GPS + Cellular
| Choose | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| GPS | People who usually carry an iPhone, want the lowest purchase price or do not need independent connectivity | Calls, messages and data away from the iPhone require supported Wi-Fi conditions; no cellular network access |
| GPS + Cellular | Running, cycling, errands without an iPhone, family members needing more communication independence and emergency calling away from the phone | Higher purchase price, eligible carrier plan, regional compatibility checks, additional monthly cost and generally greater battery use |
A GPS Series 6 can still record GPS-based workouts without the iPhone nearby and synchronize later. It simply cannot use a cellular network independently. A cellular model is not automatically unlocked for every carrier or country, and Apple’s technical specifications state that international roaming is not supported. Confirm the exact regional model and carrier before buying.
40mm versus 44mm
Choose the 40mm version if you prefer a smaller, lighter watch or have a smaller wrist. Choose the 44mm version if you value larger text, easier touch targets and more display area for workouts, maps, messages and complications. The 44mm case is slightly heavier and historically cost more in equivalent materials and connectivity configurations.
Both sizes use the same S6 platform, sensors and 32GB storage. The choice is primarily about fit, readability, weight and price.
Aluminum versus stainless steel versus titanium
- Aluminum: the lightest option, available as GPS or GPS + Cellular, with an Ion-X glass display. It is usually the easiest and least expensive version to find used.
- Stainless steel: heavier, more premium-looking and fitted with a sapphire crystal display. Series 6 stainless-steel models were GPS + Cellular.
- Titanium: lighter than stainless steel while offering a premium case and sapphire crystal. It was also GPS + Cellular and is less common on the used market.
Do not pay a large premium for stainless steel or titanium unless you specifically want the material, weight or sapphire display. They do not provide a newer processor, more storage or a different core Series 6 health platform.

Is Apple Watch Series 6 worth buying in 2026?
| Buyer or use case | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Wants the cheapest Apple Watch with an always-on display | Consider Series 6 if the battery is healthy and the price is well below newer refurbished models. |
| Wants the longest possible software-support runway | Prefer a newer Apple Watch. Series 6 is already a discontinued 2020 model. |
| Needs calls and data without carrying an iPhone | Consider GPS + Cellular only after checking the carrier, regional model and monthly plan. |
| Wants medical-grade oxygen or heart monitoring | Do not buy Series 6 for that purpose. Its health features are not a substitute for medical equipment or professional care. |
| Uses an iPhone older than iPhone 11 | It may pair with older software, but the latest watchOS 26 update requires iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE third generation or later, with iOS 26. |
| Wants to swim with a used watch | Be cautious. The original 50-meter rating does not guarantee that an aging or repaired unit retains its seals. |
| Finds Series 6 priced close to Series 7 or Series 8 | Usually choose the newer model for its larger or newer platform and longer expected support runway. |
Series 6 remains attractive when its price reflects its age. It offers an always-on display, ECG hardware, Blood Oxygen hardware where available, fall detection, sleep tracking, workout tracking and current watchOS support. Its weaknesses in 2026 are the aging battery, finite hardware lifespan, lower performance relative to newer models and lack of features tied to newer sensors or chips.

1. Identify the exact model
Do not rely on a listing title alone. Ask whether the watch is 40mm or 44mm, GPS or GPS + Cellular, and aluminum, stainless steel or titanium.
To verify it on a paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch > General > About, find Model Number, then tap the part number beginning with M to reveal the five-digit model number beginning with A. Apple lists these Series 6 identifiers:
| Configuration | Case | Apple model number |
|---|---|---|
| GPS | 40mm | A2291 |
| GPS | 44mm | A2292 |
| GPS + Cellular, North America | 40mm | A2293 |
| GPS + Cellular, North America | 44mm | A2294 |
| GPS + Cellular, Europe, Asia Pacific and China mainland | 40mm | A2375 |
| GPS + Cellular, Europe, Asia Pacific and China mainland | 44mm | A2376 |
Apple’s official identification page also lists Nike, stainless-steel, Hermès and Edition versions.
2. Check Battery Health before paying
On the watch, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Check Maximum Capacity and look for a service recommendation. Menu wording can vary slightly by watchOS version, so request a current screenshot if the seller cannot let you inspect the watch directly.
There is no useful universal percentage that makes every used Series 6 a good or bad purchase. Treat a high capacity with no service warning as excellent, moderate wear as acceptable only at a suitably lower price, and a service warning, rapid drain or shutdown during workouts as risky. Ask whether the battery has been replaced, whether the watch reaches a full charge, whether it can complete a normal workout and whether the replacement was performed by Apple or an unknown repairer.
3. Make sure Activation Lock is gone
A watch that remains linked to the previous owner’s Apple Account may be unusable to you even if it has been erased. Require the seller to unpair it from the previous iPhone, remove it from the previous Apple Account and erase all content and settings.
The safest test is to pair the watch to your own iPhone during the return period. Do not accept only a seller’s assurance that the watch was reset. If setup requests the previous owner’s Apple Account, return it.
4. Test the physical hardware
- Swipe across the entire display and test touch response near the edges.
- Turn the Digital Crown and press the side button.
- Test the speaker, microphone and haptic feedback.
- Confirm that the magnetic charger makes a stable connection and that charging completes normally.
- Inspect the rear crystal, display and case for cracks, dents or signs of water exposure.
- Run a workout and check heart-rate tracking, GPS behavior and battery drain.
- Test ECG and Blood Oxygen where those features are available, while remembering that a successful reading is not a medical diagnosis.
5. Verify cellular details
For GPS + Cellular, confirm the regional model, intended carrier, plan eligibility and whether the watch is paid off where applicable. Ask the seller to permit cellular activation testing. A watch can be in good physical condition and still be unsuitable for your carrier or country.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
6. Confirm included accessories and the return policy
Check whether the listing includes an Apple magnetic charging cable, a compatible third-party cable, a band, a power adapter and the original box. A meaningful return period and written warranty are especially valuable for a six-year-old watch because battery, water resistance and cellular activation cannot be judged reliably from photographs.
Alternatives to consider
Apple Watch Series 7: the closest direct upgrade, with a newer generation and a larger display design. It is often worth considering if its refurbished price is only modestly higher than Series 6.
Apple Watch Series 8: a newer health and safety platform with a longer expected support runway than Series 6. Compare actual refurbished prices, battery condition and warranty rather than assuming the older model is automatically the bargain.
Apple Watch SE second generation: a newer entry-level option that can be better for software longevity, but it does not provide every Series 6 health feature, including the same ECG and Blood Oxygen capability.

How much did Apple Watch Series 6 cost at launch?
The verified U.S. starting price was $399 for GPS and $499 for GPS + Cellular in September 2020. Larger cases, premium materials, special editions and bands cost more.
Is Apple Watch Series 6 discontinued?
Yes. Apple replaced it in the flagship lineup with Series 7 in 2021 and no longer sells Series 6 as a new current model.
Does Apple Watch Series 6 still get updates?
Yes, as of August 10, 2026. Apple lists Series 6 as compatible with watchOS 26.6, released July 27, 2026. Future watchOS support is not guaranteed.
What is the latest watchOS for Apple Watch Series 6?
The latest version verified for this guide is watchOS 26.6. Apple lists it for Series 6 and later as of July 27, 2026.
Does Series 6 work with iPhone 11?
Yes. Updating Series 6 to watchOS 26 requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE third generation or later, running iOS 26. The original launch requirement was much lower: iPhone 6s or later with iOS 14 or later.
Does Apple Watch Series 6 work with Android?
No. Apple Watch setup and management require an iPhone; Series 6 is not an Android-compatible smartwatch.
Does Apple Watch Series 6 have Blood Oxygen?
Yes, Series 6 introduced the Blood Oxygen sensor and app. Availability and behavior vary by region, age, software and model. Apple also has a U.S. restriction note for certain models with part numbers ending in LW/A purchased on or after January 18, 2024. The feature is for general wellness, not medical diagnosis.

No watch should be described as waterproof. Apple rates Series 6 as water-resistant to 50 meters under ISO 22810:2010 and says it is suitable for shallow-water swimming, but water resistance can decline with age, impact or repair.
What battery health should I look for in a used Series 6?
Look for the highest capacity available without a service warning, but do not rely on one universal cutoff. A service recommendation, rapid drain or shutdown during workouts is a strong reason to reject the unit or demand a substantial discount.
What is the difference between GPS and Cellular Series 6?
GPS models generally need the iPhone or supported Wi-Fi for calls, messages and data. GPS + Cellular models can connect to a supported mobile network away from the iPhone, but require an eligible carrier plan, cost more and may use more battery.
What are the Apple Watch Series 6 model numbers?
The GPS 40mm and 44mm models are A2291 and A2292. North American GPS + Cellular models are A2293 and A2294. Europe, Asia Pacific and China mainland GPS + Cellular models are A2375 and A2376.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Apple Watch Series 6 remains a capable used Apple Watch in 2026, with an always-on display, S6 performance, ECG, Blood Oxygen hardware, fall detection and current watchOS 26.6 compatibility. Its original $399 GPS starting price is historical, not current. Buy only after checking Battery Health, Activation Lock, exact model, cellular compatibility and the seller’s return policy. If a refurbished Series 7, Series 8 or newer SE costs only a little more, the newer model is usually the safer long-term purchase.
