An Apple Watch Series 7 owner said his watch became extremely hot, developed cracks, and later made crackling sounds before it “exploded.” He went to an emergency room because he feared lead exposure, but the reports do not say he was diagnosed with lead poisoning. The incident was reported in October 2022; its technical cause was not established.
What happened to the Apple Watch Series 7?
In an account reported by 9to5Mac on October 5, 2022, the owner said the watch became much hotter than usual while he was wearing it. It displayed a watchOS warning that it needed to shut down because of its temperature, and he noticed the back was cracked.
He said the next morning that the display had shattered. When he picked the watch up, it made “crackling sounds” and then “exploded” as he threw it out a window. That is the owner’s description as reported by 9to5Mac, not a technical finding about what happened inside the device.
Why did the owner go to the ER?
The owner said he went to an emergency room because he was worried about possible lead exposure after the incident. The coverage does not document confirmed lead poisoning or another diagnosis. His reason for seeking care should not be read as evidence that the watch exposed him to lead.

Did Apple confirm a battery defect or issue a recall?
No technical root cause was reported. Coverage characterized the event as an apparent or alleged battery failure, but that does not establish that Apple confirmed a defective battery. The reports also do not identify a recall or dedicated service program for this specific incident, or provide a later Apple technical finding. No incident-rate statistic was reported, so this single account cannot establish how often such events occur.
The owner said Apple Support escalated his call to a manager, opened an investigation case, and instructed him not to touch the watch until Apple followed up. HotHardware’s October 5, 2022 report likewise quoted Apple Support’s instruction to “not to touch the watch until he heard back from Apple Support.”

What to do if an Apple Watch gets unusually hot
A temperature warning, swelling, cracking, smoke, or fire deserves caution. The reports support contacting Apple and following its instructions; they do not establish a universal repair procedure. If a watch appears damaged or hazardous, do not keep wearing or handling it to investigate.
