That made the Series 9 one of the better Apple Watch deals of the period—but not necessarily an all-time low for every configuration. Later sales reportedly dropped at least one 41mm configuration to $279.99.

What was the Labor Day Series 9 deal?
There was no single, universal “Apple Watch Series 9” price. MacRumors reported Amazon models from $299 in August 2024, while 9to5Mac reported roughly $100 Labor Day discounts, including deeper reductions on some 45mm GPS + Cellular versions at Walmart.

Retailer listings could also vary by case finish, band, color, and whether the seller was the retailer itself or a marketplace vendor. Shipping, sales tax, membership requirements, and cellular activation terms could change the final cost. The available reporting does not establish one exact Labor Day SKU with a single guaranteed price.
Was it really the lowest price ever?
“One of the lowest prices we had seen” is more accurate than “the lowest price ever.” Series 9 deals had already reached approximately $299 for 41mm GPS and $329 for 45mm GPS before Labor Day. A later TechRadar deal report cited $279.99 for a 41mm Series 9, so the Labor Day price cannot be called the all-time low across all models.
The meaningful comparison is always configuration-specific: a $299 41mm GPS watch is not equivalent to a 45mm GPS + Cellular model, a stainless-steel version, or a refurbished unit. “$100 off” may also mean $100 below the original MSRP rather than $100 below a retailer’s recent street price.

How much did the Series 9 normally cost?
At launch, U.S. starting prices were approximately $399 for the 41mm GPS aluminum model and $429 for the 45mm GPS aluminum model. Cellular versions cost more. These launch prices are documented in a published Series 9 pricing table.
By Labor Day 2024, however, the watch was no longer a new-generation product. Apple introduced Series 9 in September 2023, and Series 10 followed in September 2024. The timing suggests retailers were discounting outgoing inventory, although that explanation is an inference rather than a confirmed statement from a particular retailer.
Why the Series 9 was still appealing
The Series 9 brought Apple’s S9 SiP processor, 41mm and 45mm case options, Double Tap, health and fitness tracking, notifications, Apple Pay, and close iPhone integration. A contemporary Apple product sheet confirms the available sizes, S9 processor, and Double Tap feature.

It remains a capable everyday smartwatch for an iPhone owner who wants activity tracking, workout recording, heart-related health features, messages, calls, timers, navigation, and wrist-based payments. Aluminum models are lighter and generally cheaper; stainless-steel models offer a more premium case but should not be confused with the discounted aluminum GPS listings that drove the $299 headlines.

Features can differ by model and market. Connectivity, case material, band, and Blood Oxygen availability are not identical across every Series 9 unit.
GPS or GPS + Cellular?
GPS is the better value for most buyers. The watch can use the iPhone for connected functions when the phone is nearby, and it avoids an ongoing carrier charge. Choose it if you normally carry your iPhone and mainly want notifications, workouts, health tracking, and Apple Pay.

GPS + Cellular can connect through a supported carrier plan when you leave the iPhone behind. It is more useful for runners, children, older adults, or anyone who regularly wants calls, messages, or streaming without carrying a phone. The cellular connection is not included permanently with the watch: compatible service usually adds a recurring carrier fee, and support varies by country, carrier, plan, and Family Setup eligibility.
A cellular watch is not automatically a better deal. Add the purchase price, activation requirements, and expected monthly service cost before comparing it with GPS.
Which size should you buy?
- 41mm: Usually the lowest-priced option and a better physical fit for smaller wrists.
- 45mm: Provides more screen area and larger text, which can help readability and suit larger wrists.
Case size does not determine whether a watch is GPS or Cellular. Confirm both fields separately in the listing.

Blood Oxygen: verify the exact version
Do not assume every Series 9 has identical Blood Oxygen functionality. U.S. availability became complicated, and retailer titles may still use wording such as “with Blood Oxygen” without proving that the feature will function identically on every unit or in every region.
Best Buy listings illustrate why the precise listing matters. Before paying, check the model number, sales region, feature description, and whether the unit is new, refurbished, or open-box.
Is a Series 9 still worth buying?
Buy when:
- The exact new 41mm GPS configuration is around $299 or less.
- A new 45mm GPS model is close to $329 and you value the larger screen.
- The price is materially below a newer standard Apple Watch.
- You already use a compatible iPhone and want Apple’s ecosystem without paying flagship pricing.
Wait or choose another model when:
- The Series 9 costs nearly as much as a newer generation.
- You want the longest likely remaining software-support runway or newer hardware.
- You need a specific newer sensor, display, or battery improvement.
- You would not use cellular service but are considering a costly Cellular model.
- You use Android. Apple Watch is not a practical Android smartwatch choice.
Do not promise a fixed number of future watchOS updates. The Series 9 is an older generation than the current lineup, so it may have a shorter remaining support horizon than a newer watch, but Apple does not guarantee a fixed support schedule for an individual model.
Series 9 versus the alternatives

- Verify whether the item is new, manufacturer-refurbished, third-party refurbished, or open-box.
- Check the seller, warranty provider, and return period.
- For used or refurbished units, ask about battery health and confirm Activation Lock is removed.
- Confirm that the charger is included.
- For Cellular, check carrier compatibility, activation requirements, and monthly cost.
- Verify Blood Oxygen wording for the exact model and region.
- Confirm current iPhone and operating-system compatibility on Apple’s current Apple Watch page; compatibility requirements can change.
Bottom line
The Labor Day headline referred to a historical U.S. 2024 sale, with Series 9 GPS models appearing around $299 and some larger or cellular configurations receiving different discounts. It was an excellent price for a new 41mm GPS model, but not a universal or permanent all-time low. In September 2026, treat any Series 9 listing as clearance, refurbished, or remaining third-party stock until the retailer confirms otherwise.
Buy a new Series 9 when the exact GPS configuration is around $299 or less and the savings over a newer watch are substantial. Choose a newer model when the price gap is small, or when newer hardware and longer likely support matter more than the discount.
