The Apple Watch battery-swelling settlement is no longer open for new payment selections. The deadline to confirm or update payment information was April 10, 2025, and the court entered final judgment on May 9, 2025. The settlement covered some U.S. owners of first-generation, Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3 Apple Watches—but owning one of those models alone did not qualify someone.
What the Apple Watch settlement covered
The case, Smith et al. v. Apple Inc., Case No. 4:21-cv-09527, concerned allegations that certain early Apple Watch models experienced problems related to battery swelling. Apple denied that the covered watches had those issues and denied wrongdoing, according to the official settlement notice. The settlement resolved the claims; it was not a court finding that Apple had caused a defect.
The court-approved settlement established a $20 million non-reversionary fund. That fund covered class payments as well as court-approved fees and costs, administration expenses and incentive awards.
Who was included in the settlement class?
The court’s class definition required all of the following:

| Base payment | $20 per covered device for qualifying class members who made a payment selection by the response deadline, or whose valid, current payment information the administrator confirmed. |
| Possible reduction | If necessary, the payment could be reduced pro rata to less than $20 per covered device. |
| Conditional higher payment | If more than $50,000 remained after costs were allocated, payments could be increased, up to $50 per covered device. |
The official settlement FAQ also described amounts as potentially above or below $20 depending on how many members confirmed payment information, with a maximum of $50 per covered watch. The $20 million fund was shared among payments and other approved expenses, so the stated per-device figures should not be read as a promise of a particular individual payment.
