Apple Watch Smart Stack is a collection of widgets that surfaces timely information and actions based on context, such as the time, your location, or recent activity. What is Apple Watch Smart Stack?
Smart Stack is a vertically browsable collection of Apple Watch widgets. You open it from the watch face, scroll through the cards, and tap a widget to open its associated app.
Unlike a complication, a Smart Stack widget is not permanently embedded in a watch face. A complication is a small piece of information or an app shortcut placed directly on the face. Smart Stack sits in a separate layer above the face, giving you access to more information without filling every complication slot.

The stack is context-aware: watchOS can suggest or prioritize widgets that may be useful at a particular time or place. Apple’s examples include suggestions based on the time of day, location, or recent activity. Suggestions depend on context and may not appear immediately or in the same order every time.
How to open Smart Stack
Start on the watch face. The general ways to open Smart Stack are:
- Turn the Digital Crown upward.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the display.
- Use a supported gesture if your Apple Watch model and watchOS version provide one. Gesture options vary by device and software; consult Apple’s current guide for your setup.
Once Smart Stack opens, turn the Digital Crown or swipe to move through the widgets. Tap a widget to open the related app or action. Apple also documents gesture-based navigation on supported setups; watchOS 27 adds a single-handed tap gesture to select a widget by tapping your index finger and thumb together once.
Some Apple apps can be reached near the bottom of the stack. Apple identifies Music, Workouts, and Messages as apps you can access by scrolling to the bottom.

Do not use the side button to open Smart Stack. It opens Control Center. Use the Digital Crown or swipe up instead.
What can appear in Smart Stack?
Regular widgets
Widgets can display information from Apple apps and compatible third-party apps. Examples include:
- Weather conditions and forecasts
- Calendar appointments
- Reminders
- Wallet passes, including boarding passes when relevant
- Music controls
- Workout information
- Messages
- Information from compatible third-party apps
Some apps offer more than one widget, and some widgets have configuration options. Apple gives the example of choosing a frequently used home accessory in the Home widget.

Live Activities
Live Activities show ongoing app activity and may appear at the top of Smart Stack. Apple gives workouts, timers, and music as examples. If several are active, scroll to the one you want.
By default, Smart Stack stays open while a Live Activity is running, even when you lower your wrist. To adjust this behavior, open Settings > Smart Stack > Live Activities on the watch and choose from the available options.
Contextual suggestions in newer watchOS versions
Apple describes Smart Stack suggestions as information or actions that may be useful based on context, including the time of day, location, and recent activity. watchOS 11 introduced suggested and interactive widgets and Live Activities; suggested widgets can use signals such as time and date, location, and wake-up or bedtime.
Apple’s watchOS 27 update notes describe additional contextual suggestions, including parked-car location, birthday reminders, transit-card balance changes, and Noise app alerts. They also describe a single-handed tap gesture for selecting a Smart Stack widget. These are version-specific features; availability depends on the device, software, and context, and not every suggestion is guaranteed to appear.
Apple says routine-based suggestions can take time to develop. If a suggestion does not appear, it does not necessarily mean Smart Stack is malfunctioning.
How Smart Stack decides what to show first
Smart Stack combines your configured widgets with context-based suggestions. Apple says the stack can surface information or actions based on factors such as time of day, location, and recent activity. Its watchOS 11 notes also describe signals such as wake-up and bedtime when determining suggested-widget priority.
You control the basic contents of the stack: you can add, delete, pin, configure, and reorder widgets. Pin information you want consistently easy to find; leave other widgets unpinned if you want the stack to suggest or prioritize them contextually.

How to customize Smart Stack
To edit the widgets on your Apple Watch:
- Open Smart Stack from the watch face.
- Scroll all the way to the bottom.
- Tap Edit.
- Use the add control to add a widget.
- Tap the delete control on a widget you want to remove.
- Tap the pin control to keep a widget in a fixed position.
- To reorder pinned widgets, touch and hold one, then drag it to the desired position.
- Tap Done.
When an app offers multiple widgets, choose the one that best matches your needs. Some widgets also expose additional settings. For example, Apple says the Home widget may let you select a frequently used accessory.

Leave context-sensitive items unpinned if you want Smart Stack to suggest or prioritize them when relevant. Pinning is useful when you prefer predictable access over contextual ordering.

A practical Smart Stack workflow
- Begin at the watch face.
- Turn the Digital Crown upward or swipe up to open Smart Stack.
- Check the stack for Live Activities or suggested widgets.
- Scroll through the widgets and tap one to open its app.
- Scroll to the bottom for apps such as Music, Workouts, or Messages and the Edit control.
- Pin your dependable essentials and reorder pinned widgets if needed.
- Leave other widgets unpinned if you want contextual suggestions and prioritization.
What to do if a widget or suggestion does not appear
Smart Stack suggestions depend on context, and available features can vary by model and software. Work through these checks:
1. Confirm the watchOS version and model
Smart Stack has changed across watchOS versions. Gestures and suggestions described in newer release notes are not necessarily available on every Apple Watch. Check Apple’s current compatibility information for the feature and your device.

A widget cannot provide useful content if its associated app is missing, not set up, or has no relevant data. Install the app, sign in if required, and create the relevant content—for example, a calendar event, reminder, workout, timer, or Wallet pass.

3. Add the widget manually
Contextual suggestions do not mean every widget will automatically appear. Open Smart Stack, scroll to the bottom, tap Edit, and use the add control. Pin the widget if you want it to stay in a fixed position.
4. Review permissions
Some app information depends on the app having access to relevant data. Review the app and watch permissions if a widget lacks information it needs.
5. Check whether the situation is relevant
A Live Activity or contextual suggestion may appear only while its activity or context exists. Not seeing a travel-related suggestion when you are not traveling, for example, does not necessarily indicate a fault.
6. Consider software and feature availability
Apple notes that features and gestures can vary by device and software version. Compare your model and installed watchOS with Apple’s current guidance before assuming a missing feature is broken.
