The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the more natural choice for iPhone owners who want Apple’s smartwatch features and integration. Garmin’s fēnix 8 is the stronger fit if you use Android, want longer intervals between charges, or need to choose among different case sizes and display versions. For hiking, both offer useful navigation; neither is a universal winner.
Compare the specific fēnix 8 configuration you’re considering—not just the product family—and weigh your phone, charging routine, route-following needs, and fit before deciding.

At a glance: which watch fits your priorities?
| Your priority | Better starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You use an iPhone and want Apple services | Apple Watch Ultra 3 | Apple requires an iPhone to set up the watch. The Ultra’s battery estimate may not suit your charging routine. |
| You use Android or switch phone platforms | Garmin fēnix 8 | TechRadar describes it as compatible with Android and iPhone through Garmin Connect; check current app and phone requirements. |
| You want fewer charging stops | Garmin fēnix 8 | Battery figures vary by case size, screen behavior, GPS mode, and—in Solar models—exposure assumptions. |
| You want a choice of case sizes and display versions | Garmin fēnix 8 | Compare the exact model you’d wear. Ultra 3 is a 49 mm watch. |
| You want Apple’s smartwatch ecosystem | Apple Watch Ultra 3 | This is an ecosystem-fit judgment, not a quantified performance test. |
| You want to follow routes outdoors | Compare the workflows | Apple offers offline maps and Compass features under software and regional conditions; Garmin integrates route maps into workouts, according to TechRadar. |
How does battery life compare?
Garmin publishes longer battery estimates, but the number depends on the fēnix 8’s size, display, and operating mode. Apple’s Ultra 3 estimate is shorter and tied to a defined normal-use test. These are manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee of how long either watch will last for you.
Apple Watch Ultra 3
Apple lists up to 42 hours of normal use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. Its normal-use estimate includes a specified mix of time checks, notifications, app use, a workout with music, sleep tracking, and cellular and Bluetooth connection time. Apple says actual results vary with use and configuration. Apple’s Ultra 3 specifications and test notes provide the conditions behind the figures.

Garmin fēnix 8
For AMOLED models in smartwatch mode with wrist gesture enabled, Garmin lists up to 10 days for 43 mm, 16 days for 47 mm, and 29 days for 51 mm. For the 47 mm AMOLED model, Garmin lists up to 47 hours in GPS-only mode with wrist gesture, or up to 37 hours with the display always on. These are separate modes and configurations, not a single family-wide runtime; enabled features affect actual battery life. Check the Garmin fēnix 8 manual’s battery estimates for the exact model and mode. Solar versions use different assumptions, so don’t compare a solar maximum directly with a standard AMOLED estimate.
If your trips routinely span several days away from a charger, the fēnix 8’s published endurance makes it the stronger starting point. If you recharge frequently and want the Apple ecosystem, consider whether the Ultra 3’s stated runtime fits your routine, including workouts and sleep tracking.

Phone compatibility and everyday smartwatch features
The phone you own may settle the choice. Apple says an iPhone is required to set up Apple Watch Ultra 3, so it is not a practical option for an Android-only user. TechRadar’s comparison describes the fēnix 8 as working with both Android and iPhone through Garmin Connect. Check current device and app requirements before buying, especially if you plan to change phones.
For an iPhone owner, the Ultra 3 is the more direct route to Apple’s smartwatch services and app ecosystem. TechRadar’s view that Apple has the stronger smartwatch OS and app ecosystem is a reviewer judgment, rather than a measured result that applies equally to every user.

Which is better for hiking and navigation?
Both watches offer outdoor navigation, but the workflows differ. Apple says Ultra 3 supports offline maps with turn-by-turn directions, along with Waypoints and Backtrack in Compass. Offline maps depend on compatible iPhone and watchOS software and are not available in every country or region; map availability varies. See Apple’s September 2025 Ultra 3 announcement for its feature and availability caveats.
TechRadar describes Garmin’s route maps as integrated into the workout flow and notes a dedicated LED flashlight. Those features may suit someone who wants navigation alongside a structured outdoor activity and a built-in light. The available descriptions do not establish a universal winner for GPS or navigation accuracy.

Before choosing, ask how you navigate: do you need offline map guidance on the watch, want to follow a route during a workout, or value a light on your wrist after dark? Try the controls and screen in person if possible, and confirm maps and features are available where you hike.
Size, fit, and display choices
Apple Watch Ultra 3 has a 49 mm case. Garmin fēnix 8 comes in 43 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm sizes, with AMOLED and Solar configurations. That range gives Garmin buyers more ways to prioritize case size and display type, but battery estimates differ between them. A smaller or larger case can also feel different on your wrist; the sources cited here do not include controlled comfort testing or wearer measurements. If you can, try the exact size and band before buying.
Best Value
- Snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, rowing, and more — you’ll find tons of additional ways to take your favorite sports and activities to the next level with Ultra 3 in the App Store. Tap in. Max out.
What about recreational diving?
Apple says Ultra 3 can be used for recreational scuba diving to 40 m with a compatible third-party app. It should not be used below 40 m, and Oceanic+ dive-computer capabilities require a subscription. Apple recommends diving with a companion and a secondary device. Consult Apple’s product specifications and its product announcement for the stated limits and conditions. The sources available here do not establish a detailed, configuration-specific comparison of Garmin’s dive functions, so verify the exact fēnix model and supported features if diving is a deciding factor.
Are the prices comparable?
TechRadar’s November 22, 2025 comparison listed launch-era prices of $799 for Apple Watch Ultra 3 and from $999 for Garmin fēnix 8. Those are historical, region-specific figures—not current October 2026 prices. Current retailer pricing and stock are not established here, so check the price for the exact model and configuration in your region before deciding.
How to choose between them
- Start with your phone. If you have Android, the fēnix 8 is the practical starting point; Apple requires an iPhone for Ultra 3 setup.
- Set your charging threshold. Compare your longest trips and workout habits with the Apple estimate and the Garmin figure for the precise size, display, and mode you want.
- Think through your route workflow. Compare Apple’s offline maps, turn-by-turn directions, Waypoints, and Backtrack with Garmin’s route maps in workouts, then confirm regional availability.
- Choose the size and screen you’ll actually wear. Ultra 3 is 49 mm; fēnix 8 offers 43 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm configurations. Try the watch if possible.
- Verify specialized needs. Divers should check the exact model and app limits; Apple’s stated recreational depth limit is 40 m, with a compatible app required.
Verdict
Choose Apple Watch Ultra 3 if you use an iPhone, value Apple integration, and are comfortable with its stated battery estimate. Choose Garmin fēnix 8 if Android compatibility, longer manufacturer-listed endurance, or a choice of sizes and display variants matters more. For either watch, the right answer depends on the exact configuration and how you plan to use it.
