What’s different between Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2?
Chip and storage
Apple lists an S8 SiP and 32 GB of storage for the first-generation Ultra, compared with an S9 SiP and 64 GB for Ultra 2. That gives Ultra 2 a newer chip generation and more room for content. The reviewed sources do not provide a comparative performance benchmark, so a specific speed advantage should not be assumed.
Display brightness
Apple specifies peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits for the Ultra and up to 3,000 nits for Ultra 2. Both have the same listed 49 mm case, 410 × 502 resolution, and 1,185 sq mm display area. Ultra 2’s advantage is its stated peak brightness, not a larger or sharper display; Apple’s figures are specifications rather than a direct field test.

Ultra Wideband and finish
The first-generation Ultra lists a U1 chip, while Ultra 2 lists second-generation Ultra Wideband. The cited specifications establish the hardware difference but do not, by themselves, establish a practical benefit for every owner. Ultra 2 is also listed in natural or black titanium, while the original is listed in natural titanium.
Battery ratings
Apple lists up to 36 hours of normal-use battery life for both models. It lists Ultra 2 for up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode, but the reviewed first-generation specification page does not provide a matching figure. Because the published test details differ, do not treat the Low Power Mode figures as a controlled generation-to-generation test. Actual battery life depends on use and conditions.

What stays the same?
Apple lists the same 49 mm case, display resolution and area, and normal-use battery maximum for both generations. The cited specifications also list L1/L5 dual-frequency GPS, Bluetooth 5.3, 100 m water resistance, IP6X dust resistance, MIL-STD 810H testing, and recreational diving capability to 40 m for both. A water-resistance rating is not a guarantee that a watch is suitable for every water activity.
Which Apple Watch Ultra should you buy?
Compare current prices for watches in similar condition and with the same connectivity configuration; the research reviewed here does not establish current street, used, or refurbished prices. If buying new in 2026, include Ultra 3 in the comparison because it is a later generation.
