Apple’s Watch-specific support page addresses a different alert, “Unable to Verify Update”; the exact “Unable to Check for Update” wording appears in Apple’s iPhone and iPad guidance, so it does not by itself identify a Watch-specific cause.
First, confirm the watch and iPhone can run the update
Compatibility depends on the watch model and the paired iPhone. For watchOS 26, Apple lists Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, Series 6 and later, and Ultra and later as compatible. Updating to watchOS 26 requires iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (3rd generation) or later, running iOS 26. These requirements apply to watchOS 26; check Apple’s current requirements for a different release.
If the watch cannot run the newest release, Apple says it will show the newest watchOS version available for that model. Check the Apple Watch update requirements before troubleshooting an update that the hardware cannot install.
Check the connection, charge, and update route
Before retrying, make sure the paired iPhone is on Wi-Fi and can access the internet, and that the watch is at least 50 percent charged. For installation, Apple Support says: “Leave your Apple Watch on its charger while it’s updating.”

You can start the update from the paired iPhone, or, for watchOS 6 or later, directly on the watch: Settings > General > Software Update. When updating directly on the watch, connect it to Wi-Fi. Apple’s update instructions cover both routes.
Apple’s iPhone and iPad update guidance recommends retrying on the same network and then trying another network if its “Unable to Check for Update” alert persists. That advice is for iPhone and iPad, not a confirmed Watch-specific fix; a working internet connection is still a sensible basic check for the watch update process.

Restart the watch and paired iPhone
- Check that the watch is seated correctly on its charger.
- Restart the Apple Watch.
- Restart the iPhone paired with the watch.
- Retry the update using the paired iPhone or the watch’s Settings > General > Software Update screen.
Apple recommends restarting both devices and trying again in its Apple Watch update guidance. For the separate “Unable to Verify Update” alert, Apple also advises checking the watch’s internet connection before retrying.
Check and free Apple Watch storage
If the update still fails, or the watch reports that storage is low, open Settings > General > Storage on the watch. Apple recommends removing synced music or photos, turning off photo syncing, and removing apps if you need more room. See Apple’s storage instructions for the available options.

Unpair only if the simpler steps fail
Unpairing is a more disruptive escalation. Apple’s Watch-specific guidance describes unpairing, setting the watch up as new, installing the update, and optionally unpairing again to restore from a backup. Keep the iPhone and watch close during the process. For a GPS + Cellular model, choose to keep the cellular plan; you may need the Apple Account password to turn off Activation Lock.
Follow Apple’s instructions for “Unable to Verify Update” or full Apple Watch storage when using this step. Those articles address those specific Watch situations; they do not establish that every “Unable to Check for Update” alert has the same cause.

If the error appears during Apple Watch setup
Setup may be unable to continue until the watch is updated, and the paired iPhone may also need an iOS update. Check Apple’s Apple Watch setup guidance and complete any requested iPhone update before trying setup again.
