Apple’s redesigned Blood Oxygen experience began rolling out in the United States on August 14, 2025. It applies to some U.S. Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 units that did not have the original feature; on this redesigned path, the watch collects sensor data and the paired iPhone analyzes it.
To use it, update the paired devices, open Blood Oxygen on the watch, and follow the on-screen instructions. Results appear in the iPhone Health app under Search > Respiratory > Blood Oxygen. A model name alone does not confirm eligibility: check the watch’s sales history and part number.
When did the redesigned feature launch?
Apple announced and began rolling out the redesigned U.S. experience on August 14, 2025. It was intended for some U.S. Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 units that did not already have Blood Oxygen. Apple said watches previously purchased with the original feature and watches bought outside the United States were unaffected by this change.
Which Apple Watches support Blood Oxygen?
Apple’s current support guide says the Blood Oxygen app is available on Apple Watch Series 6 or later and all Apple Watch Ultra models. That general compatibility does not mean every watch has the same U.S. processing version. Apple’s 2025 announcement specifically named some U.S. Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 units without the original feature for the redesigned experience.

A practical buyer check
Before buying an Apple Watch specifically for Blood Oxygen, confirm the sales region, whether it originally included the feature, and its exact part number. A Series 10 or Ultra 2 label by itself does not establish which Blood Oxygen workflow that individual unit supports.
What software is required?
For the redesigned experience, Apple specified iOS 18.6.1 on the paired iPhone and watchOS 11.6.1 on the Apple Watch. Apple’s current support guide also says to use the latest available iOS and watchOS, so follow its current instructions when setting up the feature.
The feature requires a compatible iPhone paired with the watch. If the Blood Oxygen app is missing from the watch, Apple says to search for it in the App Store on Apple Watch and download it.

How to take a Blood Oxygen reading
- Check eligibility. Confirm the watch model, sales region, original-feature status, and part number.
- Update both devices. Install the required software, following Apple’s current instructions for the latest available iOS and watchOS.
- Wear the watch snugly but comfortably. The back of the watch should touch your wrist.
- Open Blood Oxygen on the watch and tap Start.
- Keep your wrist still for 15 seconds. Keep your wrist flat, with the watch facing up; resting your arm on a table or in your lap can help. Apple specifies a 15-second measurement.
- Check the paired iPhone. On the redesigned U.S. path, the iPhone analyzes the sensor data and the results appear in Health.
Apple says readings may not succeed every time. Movement, some arm positions, low skin perfusion, some tattoos, or a resting heart rate above 150 beats per minute can affect a measurement. If the wrist bones interfere, Apple suggests moving the watch 2.5–5 cm up the arm.
Where do Blood Oxygen readings appear?
On the paired iPhone, open the Health app and go to Search > Respiratory > Blood Oxygen. Apple says the redesigned U.S. experience uses the paired iPhone to analyze the watch’s sensor data; results are viewed in Health.
Background readings may occur occasionally when enabled, usually when the wearer is not moving. Sleep readings occur only if Track Sleep with Apple Watch is on. Apple identifies Settings > Blood Oxygen on the watch as the place to manage background readings, including Sleep Focus and Theatre Mode options.

What the feature does—and does not do
Apple describes Blood Oxygen as a general fitness and wellness feature, not a medical tool. It is not intended for medical use, self-diagnosis, or replacing a consultation with a doctor. Do not use a consumer-device reading to diagnose a condition.
