Check the strap and the watch separately before swimming. A swim-suitable strap cannot make a watch safe for water, and fabric may dry more slowly than silicone.
Can you swim with a fabric watch strap?
Some can. Esprit NATO says its textile straps, except Perlon, are suitable for regular sea or pool use; that is a claim about its own products, not all fabric straps. Esprit NATO’s care guidance also notes that nylon may relax slightly when wet and suggests tightening the strap by one notch before entering the water.

Polyamide and nylon straps can tolerate getting wet, but drying speed and wet comfort vary. Suunto says polyamide straps do not mind getting wet, while recommending silicone for the heaviest training or swimming because it dries faster. Suunto’s care guidance is a practical comparison, not a guarantee about every textile or silicone strap.

Is the watch itself suitable for swimming?
Check the watch’s own instructions and water-resistance rating for the activity you plan to do. The strap and the watch are separate components: a strap marketed for pool or sea use does not increase the watch’s water resistance. Do not infer suitability for swimming from the strap material alone.
Are fabric straps comfortable for everyday wear?
Many are positioned for everyday use. Breitling describes its nylon straps as designed for durability, comfort, and everyday wear, and Suunto describes textile straps as suitable for everyday wear. These are manufacturers’ descriptions of their own products, not a guarantee that every wearer or strap will feel the same. Breitling’s regional product page covers its nylon straps.

For daily use, consider how the weave and thickness feel on your wrist, how the strap fits, and whether you are comfortable with its care requirements. If you regularly get the strap wet, drying time may matter as much as how it feels when dry.

Choose based on the manufacturer’s swim guidance, drying needs, weave and wet comfort, attachment hardware, compatibility, and cleaning instructions. Faster drying can favor silicone for frequent swimming, but it does not make silicone the right choice for every watch or wearer.

How should you clean a fabric strap?
Care instructions differ, so use the guidance for the exact strap rather than assuming all fabric can be cleaned the same way. For example, Garmin advises washing nylon and fabric bands with cold water, using mild soap for stubborn dirt, rinsing thoroughly, and letting the band dry completely. Garmin’s wear and care tips describe that approach.
NOMOS recommends water and soap or mild detergent for its named woven strap, followed by a thorough rinse and air-drying. Esprit NATO, by contrast, warns against liquid soap, detergents, salt, and fabric softeners for its own textile straps. Follow the applicable maker’s instructions, including any restrictions. NOMOS’s product guidance and Esprit NATO’s care guidance illustrate why one cleaning routine should not be applied to every strap.

What to check before buying a replacement
- Swim suitability: Look for an explicit statement from the strap maker about the exact material and product. Do not treat “fabric” or “nylon” as proof of swim suitability.
- Watch compatibility: Confirm lug width, attachment design, strap length, buckle or clasp requirements, and the maker’s compatibility notes.
- Specific exceptions: NOMOS says its cited woven strap is not compatible with Metro models; check the named product’s full compatibility information before ordering.
- Care and drying: Compare cleaning restrictions and consider how long the strap may stay wet after swimming.
