Sometimes—but there is no universal warranty for pre-owned luxury watches. Coverage depends on the watch’s brand terms, its paperwork and purchase history, the seller’s written warranty, and the buyer’s location. One clear exception is a qualifying Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watch sold by a participating Official Rolex Retailer: it receives a new two-year international guarantee from the sale date. For any other watch, confirm the exact coverage in writing before buying.
What warranty coverage can a pre-owned watch have?
A used watch may have a remaining manufacturer warranty, qualify for a brand-backed certified pre-owned guarantee, come with a warranty from the dealer, or have no warranty. These are different forms of coverage. A dealer’s promise does not automatically become a manufacturer warranty, and a brand warranty on a previously sold watch should not be assumed to transfer to a later owner.

What does Rolex Certified Pre-Owned cover?
Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned program offers a defined example of brand-backed coverage. Qualifying second-hand Rolex watches must be at least two years old and sold by participating Official Rolex Retailers. Each eligible program watch receives a new two-year international guarantee starting on its sale date. Rolex describes the program and guarantee.

This guarantee applies to watches sold through that official program—not every second-hand Rolex bought from a reseller. Rolex says its workshops authenticate program watches, verify their original configuration, and service and test them. Program watches have a special seal and guarantee card. Rolex explains its certification process.
Rolex notes that some of its oldest models are exceptions to the program’s stated performance expectations for waterproofness and original precision. If water resistance or timekeeping precision matters for your intended use, ask about the specific watch rather than relying on certification alone.
Rolex paperwork and eligibility
Rolex says its guarantee is valid only if the watch was sold by an Official Rolex Retailer, the guarantee card was fully completed at purchase, and the card is presented when service is requested. Check Rolex’s guarantee FAQ. Ask the retailer to confirm that the particular watch is in the Certified Pre-Owned program and that its guarantee card and sale record are in order.

A seller may provide its own written warranty, but the seller—not the watch manufacturer—is responsible for that promise. The distinction is stated in OMEGA’s warranty document for Australia and New Zealand, which says its manufacturer warranty is independent of any warranty provided by the seller. Read OMEGA’s Australia/New Zealand warranty terms.

- Gold-tone adjustable link bracelet; fold over clasp with double push-button safety

The cited OMEGA document applies to watches purchased from 1 July 2018 and states a five-year manufacturer warranty from the purchase date, subject to its terms. It covers material and manufacturing defects and requires a valid certificate completed and stamped by an authorised OMEGA retailer. The document is specific to Australia and New Zealand; it does not establish a universal OMEGA rule or settle whether any remaining period transfers to a later owner. Have OMEGA or an authorised service channel verify the watch and certificate.
How to check the warranty before you buy
- Identify the provider. Ask whether the coverage is a manufacturer warranty, an official certified pre-owned guarantee, the dealer’s own warranty, or more than one. Get the answer in writing.
- Confirm the dates and transfer terms. Ask when coverage began, when it ends, and whether it applies to a subsequent owner. Do not infer transferability from the watch’s age or a card alone.
- Read what is covered. Request the written terms, including covered defects and exclusions relating to wear, water resistance, unauthorized repairs, or replaced parts.
- Check how service works. Find out who handles a claim, where the watch must be sent, and whether repairs go through the brand or the seller.
- Match the paperwork to the watch. Confirm that the warranty card or certificate is complete and consistent with the watch and its purchase history.
- Verify any certified-program claim. For a brand-backed program, ask the brand or participating retailer to confirm that this exact watch qualifies and is being sold under the program.
- Check local consumer rights. Ask whether the written warranty affects any mandatory consumer protections where you live. Rights and remedies vary by jurisdiction.
How to compare warranty coverage across listings
When comparing two watches, use the same questions for each rather than treating the word “warranty” as a complete description.
