Why the in-store experience matters to watch shoppers
In Deloitte Switzerland’s 2025 Swiss Watch Industry Study, more than 60% of surveyed consumers across Switzerland, Mexico, and major Swiss-watch export markets said they bought watches in stores. The consumer survey covered 6,500 people, with fieldwork in June and July 2025. It asked about shopping preferences, not the prevalence of complaints at watch retailers.
The reasons people gave for shopping in person help explain what can make a visit work—or fall short. The ability to try on watches was a main reason for buying in-store for 51% of respondents, while 44% valued advice and personal interaction. A poor fit, unavailable model, or unhelpful exchange can therefore frustrate a shopper precisely where a physical store is meant to offer something beyond an online listing.
In the same survey, 38% favored multi-brand stores and 23% favored mono-brand boutiques. Those preferences do not show that one format delivers better service. If you have visited both, tell us what differed in selection, staff knowledge, stock information, atmosphere, price clarity, or after-sales support. Deloitte Switzerland’s 2025 study also reports that 30% preferred buying watches online, underscoring that shoppers have different expectations and preferred ways to buy.

What part of a watch-store visit bothered you?
Describe a specific visit rather than guessing what most shoppers experience. For example:
- Was it difficult to get a salesperson’s attention, or did you have to wait longer than expected?
- Could staff answer questions clearly about the watch, its price, or its availability?
- Could you try on the watch you wanted, or was the model unavailable to handle?
- Was it clear whether the watch was in stock, could be ordered, or was simply unavailable?
- Did you feel rushed or pressured to make a decision?
- Did the store’s atmosphere suit the kind of visit you wanted?
- What would have made the experience better?
General retail findings can suggest useful questions, but they should not be mistaken for watch-store results. A January 2023 survey of 600 U.S. adults by Theatro asked about physical retail broadly; respondents cited long lines and crowds, limited product availability, and staff interactions among their frustrations. It did not measure watch shops, and its percentages should not be applied to watch shoppers. Theatro’s report offers general retail context, not a watch-store complaint ranking.
