The Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Starwheel tells time without a conventional central hour hand: three rotating numeral discs take turns indicating the hour against an arched minute scale. In reference 15212NB.OO.A002KB.01-AB, that wandering-hours display sits over a blue aventurine dial in a 41 mm case combining black ceramic and white gold. The explanation below is based on Audemars Piguet’s published specifications, not an independent hands-on test.
How the Starwheel display tells time
Audemars Piguet’s Starwheel uses a wandering-hours complication. Instead of a hand pointing to the hour around a fixed dial, the hour numeral travels across an arched minute scale at the top of the dial. Read the numeral aligned with the scale for the hour, then read its position along the scale for the minutes.
Behind that display, a central rotor completes one revolution in three hours and carries three aluminium discs. Each disc rotates on its own axis and bears four hour numerals, covering 1 through 12. As the discs move, they take turns presenting the current hour at the minute scale. A slightly curved white-gold seconds hand follows the relief of the discs. What is unusual about the mechanism?
The display separates the hour indication from the familiar rotating hour hand: the numeral itself moves through the reading position, while the minutes are read against a curved track. The three-disc arrangement keeps the next hour numeral ready to move into place as the rotor turns. Audemars Piguet calls it both a “wandering time display” and a contemporary take on the wandering-hours complication.

Reference, case and dial
The official US product page identifies the watch as reference 15212NB.OO.A002KB.01-AB. It describes a two-tone case combining black ceramic and white gold, a blue aventurine dial, and three black PVD-coated aluminium wandering-hours discs. The brand feature gives the case diameter as 41 mm, specifies 18-carat white gold alongside black ceramic, and notes a double-curved sapphire crystal. Calibre 4310 and what is publicly specified
Audemars Piguet says Calibre 4310 is selfwinding and directly derived from Calibre 4309, with a new module added to drive the Starwheel display. The official feature does not provide a complete movement specification. It therefore does not establish a power reserve, frequency, jewel count, or other numerical movement figures for this article.

Wandering hours and the Starwheel name
Audemars Piguet’s account traces wandering hours to the 17th century, says the complication fell out of favour in the 20th century, and credits the company with rediscovering and reintroducing it in 1991 under the Starwheel name. The Code 11.59 model brings the display into that collection. This historical summary reflects the manufacturer’s published account rather than independent archival verification.
Sébastian Vivas, Heritage and Museum Director at Audemars Piguet, describes its history this way: “Invented in 1655 thanks to a request by Pope Alexander VII, who suffered from insomnia that was exacerbated by the ticking of his clock, the wandering hours complication was rediscovered by Audemars Piguet in 1991 and combines history, technical challenges, design and poetry.” The quotation appears on the brand’s Starwheel feature.
