The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is not one watch with one market price: it is a collection spanning vintage icons, modern steel models and highly complicated or unique pieces. Its demand is substantial, but collection-wide market statistics and spectacular auction results do not tell you what a particular reference is worth. Buy by exact reference, condition and price—not by the Royal Oak name alone.
What makes the Royal Oak hard to shop for?
Audemars Piguet says the Royal Oak debuted in 1972 and that more than 500 iterations have since been created. That breadth matters: case size, materials, movements, complications and production eras create very different watches and collecting propositions. AP’s Royal Oak collection page is the starting point for its history and current reference listings.
The collection’s identity is not limited to its case. In a 2026 Wallpaper* feature, AP CEO Ilaria Resta described Gérald Genta’s design as an “iconic statement bracelet” as well as an iconic watch. That helps explain why buyers may care about bracelet design and fit alongside the dial, movement and case. (Wallpaper*, October 5, 2026.)
Which Royal Oak types deserve a place on a shortlist?
There is no defensible universal ranking of the most sought-after ordinary Royal Oak models in the figures available here. The following are distinct collecting directions, not a popularity league table or a claim that every example is readily available.

Vintage Jumbo, Reference 5402
The original-era Jumbo is a natural choice for someone drawn to the collection’s beginnings. Sotheby’s highlights a Reference 5402 once owned by Genta among exceptional Royal Oaks. That provenance makes the auction example unusual; it should not be treated as a price guide for a standard 5402.
Modern production Royal Oaks
Current-production references may appeal to buyers seeking a contemporary watch rather than a vintage example. They still differ by exact reference, generation, case size, material and movement. Check AP’s live reference information for specifications and production status, then compare like with like in the market where you intend to buy.

Perpetual calendars and grand complications
These Royal Oaks add mechanical complexity to the collection’s design language. Sotheby’s auction selection includes perpetual calendars and grand complications, illustrating how complication and rarity can distinguish particular lots. Such pieces are not interchangeable with simpler models, either technically or financially.
Unique and provenance-rich pieces
One extreme example is the unique Royal Oak “The Roast,” Reference 26730BC, which Sotheby’s reports sold for $621,000 in April 2026. Its uniqueness places it far outside an ordinary buyer’s comparison set. Exceptional ownership history, bespoke features or rarity can shape auction results in ways that do not transfer to a typical watch.

What the market numbers do—and do not—say
EveryWatch’s Q2 2025 report estimated that Royal Oaks accounted for 52.6% of Audemars Piguet secondary-market sales and retained 62.6% of retail value at the collection level. These figures indicate the collection’s weight in AP resale activity; they are not a valuation for an individual reference or a promise of what an owner can recover.
The same report put the average AP secondary-market price at roughly 41.2% above retail in Q2 2025, based on 227 watches from the current catalogue. That is an AP-wide average, not a Royal Oak-specific estimate. Its Royal Oak quarter-over-quarter figures also show why market momentum needs careful reading: total sales value rose 40% and sales volume rose 43.2%, while average price fell 4.4%. More watches changing hands and a higher total sales value can coincide with a lower average price. (EveryWatch, Q2 Market Movements Report.)

WatchCharts’ Q1 2026 search-result summary reported a 2.7% rise in its Royal Oak index and said nearly all in-production Royal Oak references traded above retail. An index movement describes an aggregated measure, not the change or resale value of every watch. It is also separate from EveryWatch’s Q2 2025 estimates, so the two snapshots should not be read as one continuous price series. (WatchCharts Royal Oak Market Index.)
Auction results answer a different question again: what a particular exceptional lot achieved at auction. Sotheby’s six high-profile examples include rare, complicated or provenance-rich watches, not a representative sample of ordinary Royal Oak transactions. (Sotheby’s Royal Oak auction examples.)

How to compare two Royal Oaks before buying
- Match the exact reference and generation. Do not compare watches solely because both are called Royal Oaks. Confirm the reference and relevant generation against AP’s current listings or a reliable, dated specialist record.
- Check case size and wrist fit. Dimensions and bracelet fit affect how a watch wears. If possible, try the exact watch on; a nominal case measurement alone does not capture the feel of the integrated bracelet.
- Compare material and movement or complication. Steel, precious metals and different mechanical configurations are not equivalent market categories. Identify precisely what is being offered.
- Assess condition, completeness and provenance. Examine the case, dial, movement and bracelet, and establish what documentation and accessories accompany the watch. For a claimed notable ownership history, ask what records substantiate it.
- Compare the actual price in your market. Distinguish an asking price from a completed transaction and from an auction result. Consider the relevant geography and the watch’s condition and completeness; collection-level averages cannot substitute for comparable examples of the same reference.
- Verify current specifications and status. Production status, availability and boutique pricing can change. Check AP’s current reference information rather than assuming a model remains in production or that an older quoted price still applies.
The sad reality: demand does not make every Royal Oak a good buy
The Royal Oak’s strong collection-level share of AP resale activity does not mean every reference is equally liquid, sells above retail or will appreciate. A market can be busy while its average price falls, as EveryWatch’s Q2 2025 Royal Oak figures demonstrate. Index gains, retail comparisons and exceptional auction records each measure something different; none guarantees a buyer’s eventual resale result.
For a real purchase decision, start with the reference you want and the price of comparable watches in the relevant market. Treat the broad numbers as context, and the six-figure unique-lot result as an outlier—not as evidence that an ordinary Royal Oak is an investment.
