“Crème Brûlée” is a visual nickname, not an official Audemars Piguet dial name. In Lex Stolk’s May 13, 2024 Fratello feature, it describes the black-to-gold fumé dials on two different yellow-gold Royal Oaks: a 41 mm Selfwinding Chronograph and a 37 mm Frosted Gold Selfwinding. Their size, dial texture, case finish and functions set them apart.
What “Crème Brûlée” means here
The phrase refers to the dials’ dark-to-golden gradient, which evokes the browned top of the dessert. It is Lex Stolk’s visual comparison in his May 13, 2024 Fratello feature, not a dial designation attributed to Audemars Piguet. AP’s product language for related watches uses “smoked yellow gold-toned,” alongside the applicable Tapisserie pattern.
That distinction matters when identifying a watch: “Crème Brûlée” is an informal description, while the reference number and the maker’s dial wording are more precise. A separate dealer listing used the same nickname for a vintage Royal Oak ref. 56323 BA, but that sold-out listing describes a different circa-1990s watch and does not establish a name or patina shared by these two modern models.

41 mm: Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph
Reference 26240BA.OO.1320BA.02 combines two kinds of dial character: the geometric relief of Grande Tapisserie and a fumé gradient that moves from dark to gold. Its 18-carat yellow-gold case and bracelet give the watch a uniform precious-metal appearance, while the chronograph adds a more function-focused display.

Fratello reports a 41 mm width, 12.4 mm thickness, 53 mm length and 50 m water-resistance rating. The article identifies the movement as calibre 4401, an automatic integrated flyback chronograph, and reports 391 parts, a 4 Hz frequency and a 70-hour power reserve. These are the feature’s published specifications, rather than results of independent testing.
37 mm: Royal Oak Frosted Gold Selfwinding
Reference 15550BA.GG.1356BA.01 offers a different balance of finish and dial texture. Its smooth smoked yellow-gold-tone sunburst dial omits Tapisserie, while the hammered 18-carat yellow-gold case and bracelet supply the surface texture. The contrast is the key point: the chronograph’s dial pairs fumé with a repeated raised pattern; the Frosted Gold model’s dial is smooth, with texture concentrated in the metalwork.

At 37 mm, it is the smaller of the two watches discussed in the feature. The cited article does not provide its full case dimensions, water resistance or movement specifications, so those details should not be inferred from the chronograph’s figures.
How the nickname fits AP’s dial terminology
Audemars Piguet’s own descriptions for related yellow-gold Royal Oaks use “smoked yellow gold-toned” and name the dial pattern. For example, the yellow-gold Royal Oak “Jumbo” ref. 16202BA.OO.1240BA.02 is described with a smoked yellow-gold-toned Petite Tapisserie dial. The yellow-gold Royal Oak Flying Tourbillon ref. 26730BA.ZZ.1320BA.01 has a smoked yellow-gold-toned Grande Tapisserie dial. These are related examples, not the two watches in Stolk’s feature.

Gold-toned Royal Oak dials also have historical context: AP’s Chronicles entry for model 14486 records ivory and gold-toned Tapisserie dial options when that yellow-gold model launched in 1986. That history does not make “Crème Brûlée” an official historical designation, nor does it establish that the modern fumé dials share the older models’ construction.
Which one is the better fit?
- Choose the chronograph as the subject of interest if you want the larger 41 mm format, Grande Tapisserie beneath the gradient, and a flyback chronograph movement.
- Focus on the Frosted Gold Selfwinding if the 37 mm size, smooth sunburst dial and hammered gold finish are the details you prefer.
- Use the reference number when searching to avoid confusing the two watches—or either one with vintage Royal Oaks whose sellers may use the same dessert nickname.
Prices and the vintage-name caveat
Stolk’s May 13, 2024 feature stated prices of €78,600 for the chronograph and €68,600 for the Frosted Gold Selfwinding. Those are historical prices published in that article, not current retail quotations or estimates of present market value. The cited material establishes no broader sales, rarity or price-trend figures.

The sold-out Doble Vintage Watches listing for ref. 56323 BA uses “Crème Brûlée” in its title and describes a circa-1990s, 33 mm, 18-carat yellow-gold quartz Royal Oak with calibre 2612, a diamond bezel and diamond indexes. Its description of patina is the seller’s wording; it is not evidence that the two watches from 2024 have patinated dials or that AP officially uses the nickname.
