Its defining update was mechanical: the 16202 replaced the long-serving Calibre 2121 with AP’s selfwinding Calibre 7121 while retaining the thin Jumbo format. The steel 16202ST is the clearest reference point for understanding the change.
What is the Royal Oak Jumbo 16202?
The 16202 is the 2022 successor to the Royal Oak 15202 in Audemars Piguet’s Jumbo sequence. That sequence traces back to the original 1972 Model 5402. The “Jumbo” identity is closely tied to its restrained, extra-thin case rather than to the larger-case dimensions common in many contemporary sports watches.
For the steel version, the official reference is 16202ST.OO.1240ST.02. AP describes it as a tribute to the original Royal Oak and specifies a “Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50” dial with Petite Tapisserie finishing. Audemars Piguet’s steel 16202 product page is the reference for those configuration details.
What changed from the 15202?
Calibre 7121 replaced Calibre 2121
The central update is the movement. The 15202 used Calibre 2121; the 16202 introduced selfwinding Calibre 7121. AP says the 2121 was retired at the end of 2021 and that the new movement was designed specifically to fit the extra-thin Jumbo case.

AP gives Calibre 7121 a thickness of 3.2 mm and the Jumbo case a thickness of 8.1 mm. The previous Calibre 2121 was 3.05 mm thick, according to AP’s explainer. The movement is therefore slightly thicker than its predecessor, but the watch retains the slim-case proposition that defines the Jumbo. The new calibre is more than a name change
Calibre 7121 is a new generation of movement for the Jumbo, not a continuation of the 2121 under another designation. The change matters because the original movement’s thinness had been integral to the proportions of the 15202. AP’s stated design goal for the 7121 was to bring a new selfwinding calibre into the 8.1 mm case without abandoning that format.

Steel 16202ST: case and dial
The steel 16202ST pairs a stainless-steel case and bracelet with a blue dial whose official color description is “Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50.” Its Petite Tapisserie pattern connects the watch visually to the Royal Oak’s established dial language, while the exact color and finishing name identify this specific configuration rather than every 16202 variant.
AP’s historical account says the 2022 launch included four materials: steel, pink gold, yellow gold, and platinum. Dial details, case material, and anniversary-specific components can vary across references, so the steel product page should not be treated as a full specification sheet for every metal version. AP’s Royal Oak Jumbo history places the 16202 in the lineage and records the launch materials.

How to read the 16202’s place in the Jumbo lineage
The 16202 is best understood as an evolution that preserves the format while changing the engine. It follows the original Model 5402 and the later 15202, but its defining technical distinction is the move from Calibre 2121 to Calibre 7121. The thin case remains the constraint around which that update was developed.
This is also why specifications should be checked by exact reference. The steel product page establishes the 16202ST’s dial and movement, while AP’s historical coverage describes the broader 2022 family. A feature reported for one metal or launch edition should not automatically be assumed for another without its own official product specification.

What the available specifications do not settle
Audemars Piguet’s historical article and product material do not provide a consistent power-reserve figure for all 16202 configurations: the history page states 55 hours, while a product listing surfaced for another configuration states 52 hours. Those figures may apply to different versions or specifications, so neither should be presented as a definitive reserve for the steel 16202ST without confirmation against that exact reference’s current specifications.
