The “new” A. Lange & Söhne ZEITWERK most plausibly means the second-generation time-only model announced in October 2022. Its headline upgrade is a 72-hour power reserve, doubled from 36 hours, alongside a pusher that advances the hour display separately. The familiar jumping numerals and distinctive dial architecture remain. A separate ZEITWERK DATE arrived in 2025, but it is a different model.
What changed in the second-generation ZEITWERK?
The 2022 update is evolutionary rather than a visual reinvention: the core display remains, while the manually wound calibre L043.6 gains a two-mainspring barrel construction and a stated 72-hour power reserve. A pusher at four o’clock allows the hour indication to be advanced independently; the minute display is still set using the crown.
The manufacturer’s launch specifications list the 41.9 mm case at 12.2 mm high and the movement at 451 parts. It runs at 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour, or 2.5 Hz. These are A. Lange & Söhne’s published figures from 2022, not independent measurements.
Why the reserve matters to this display
Jumping numeral discs take energy: instead of hands moving continuously, discs must accelerate and stop at each change. At the hour, all three discs move together. Anthony de Haas, the brand’s Director of Product Development, described the load this way: “To switch the discs of the jumping numerals mechanism to forward on time every minute, the movement requires much more energy than a classic time display. Not only are the numeral discs very heavy by watchmaking standards, but they also have to be quickly accelerated and braked again. This calls for considerably higher forces than the uniform rotation of a pair of hands of much less weight. The greatest amount of energy is needed at the top of the hour when the movement advances all three discs at the same time.”

How does the jumping-numeral display work?
The ZEITWERK presents time in a digital-style layout, but it is a mechanical watch. Three numeral discs display the digits from left to right: one for the hour and two for the tens and units of the minutes. The discs jump in a fraction of a second, with all three advancing together at the top of the hour.
A. Lange & Söhne says its patented constant-force escapement triggers the minute-by-minute change and supplies the movement with consistent force, which the manufacturer says benefits rate stability. That is the company’s explanation of the mechanism, not an independent performance finding.

The launch release gives a sense of how tightly the display is arranged: the hour ring measures 30.0 mm across, while the minute discs measure 19.0 mm and 12.7 mm. The two minute discs sit just 0.2 mm apart vertically. These are manufacturer-published component dimensions.

Both versions share the L043.6 movement and the same case size. The time bridge was subtly revised to make more room for the small seconds dial at six o’clock; the final twelve hours of the power-reserve scale are marked in red.

Is the ZEITWERK DATE the same as the “new” ZEITWERK?
No. The 2025 ZEITWERK DATE is a later family variant, not the 2022 second-generation time-only model. The official announcement describes it in pink gold with a grey dial, a ring-shaped date indication around the dial and calibre L043.8. The date ring advances at midnight. Its case measures 44.2 mm across and 12.3 mm high, compared with 41.9 mm by 12.2 mm for the 2022 models.
For identification, the clearest distinction is complication and calibre: the 2022 time-only watch uses L043.6, while the 2025 DATE uses L043.8 and adds the date ring. Calling both simply “the new ZEITWERK” can obscure that difference.

What the update does—and does not—establish
The second-generation ZEITWERK keeps its signature jumping display while addressing two practical aspects of the mechanism: longer stated running time and independent hour adjustment. That makes the change technically meaningful without making the design a wholesale reset.
The published specifications establish construction, dimensions and the manufacturer’s stated power reserve; they do not establish current retail price, regional availability, wrist comfort or independently tested timekeeping performance. A buying decision on those points needs current market-specific information and evidence beyond the launch specifications.
