The 2021 refresh centered on the 42 mm Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph: Audemars Piguet offered steel, titanium and 18-carat pink-gold versions, updated the dial designs and fitted the watches with selfwinding flyback Calibre 4404. The collection also gained an interchangeable strap system. AP described a separate new 43 mm generation, so its specifications should not be folded into the 42 mm update.
What changed in the 2021 42 mm collection?
Audemars Piguet’s collection overview describes refreshed 42 mm Royal Oak Offshore Chronographs in three case materials: stainless steel, titanium and 18-carat pink gold. Dial options use Petite or Méga Tapisserie patterns in different hues. The update also brought an interchangeable strap system to the 42 and 43 mm offerings. Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Offshore collection overview presents these as collection features, not proof that every dial or strap is available with every case reference.
The shared movement detail AP identifies for the 42 mm novelties is its selfwinding integrated flyback chronograph Calibre 4404, shown through a sapphire caseback. A flyback chronograph lets the wearer reset and restart the chronograph with one operation while it is running, rather than stopping and restarting it in separate steps.
How do the documented 42 mm options differ?

A titanium example: reference 26238TI.OO.A056CA.01
One concrete example is AP’s titanium-cased 26238TI.OO.A056CA.01. Its official model page specifies a khaki Méga Tapisserie dial with silver-toned counters, a khaki interchangeable textured rubber strap and Calibre 4404. How the 42 mm refresh differs from the 43 mm generation
AP’s collection overview discusses a new 43 mm generation separately from the updated 42 mm models. AP Chronicles identifies the 2021 43 mm titanium-and-ceramic Chronograph reference 26420IO with Calibre 4401. By contrast, AP names Calibre 4404 for the 42 mm novelties. The 43 mm reference and its movement are therefore not specifications of the 42 mm refresh. AP’s collection overview and AP Chronicles’ entry for 26420IO document the two lines separately.
How the update fits the Offshore’s history
Audemars Piguet created the Royal Oak Offshore in 1993 as a sportier, more muscular take on the Royal Oak. The brand’s history page attributes the design inspiration to powerboat racing. Raphaël Balestra, AP’s Manager Heritage & Archives, describes it as conceived for a younger, adventurous generation. Audemars Piguet’s collection history gives that context for the family’s identity.

AP Chronicles records the original reference 25721 as a 42 mm selfwinding chronograph with Calibre 2126/2840 and water resistance to 10 ATM. Those are historical specifications for the original, not details to carry over to the 2021 models. AP Chronicles also reports 10,896 examples of reference 25721 delivered from 1993 through 2016.
