The Author Clock displays literary passages containing the current time, turning a glance at a clock into a short reading moment. It is a physical e-paper clock from Author & Co, available in two sizes; the maker says it can keep time without Wi-Fi, while downloading quotes and software updates requires a 2.4 GHz connection.
What is the Author Clock?
Author & Co describes it as “The clock that tells time through literary quotes. A new hand-picked passage every minute of the day.” Each displayed passage includes the time being shown. The clock can also put a digital time header above the text and highlight the time within a quote. The company says its library contains more than 13,000 time-specific quotes by more than 2,500 authors; those totals are company-reported figures on its Author Clock product page.
The idea is different from a conventional literary clock that spells out the time in words: this one presents passages from literature that contain the relevant time. Author & Co says it launched the first Author Clock in 2022, and describes the screen as paper-like, non-illuminated e-paper.
Which Author Clock size should you choose?
| Model | Display | Placement and mounting | Manufacturer-listed price at access in 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vol 1 Small | 4.3 inches (110 mm) | Designed for a desk or nightstand; the maker describes it as readable at arm’s length. It has a brass base. | $209 |
| Vol 2 Large | 7.8 inches (200 mm) | Suitable for a shelf or wall mounting; its brass base is removable for wall mounting. | $369 |
These dimensions, placement descriptions, mounting details, and prices come from the manufacturer’s product page. The prices are not guaranteed future prices. Vol 1’s listed materials include a solid white oak housing, recycled ABS bezel, brass base and crown, and USB-C charging. The product page identifies the Vol 2 display size and removable base; it does not state a comparable set of housing materials there.

Does the Author Clock need Wi-Fi?
No, not to maintain or manually set the time, according to Author & Co. Its FAQ says: “Author Clock keeps accurate time even without Wi-Fi, and you can set the time manually. However, new quotes and software updates require a 2.4ghz internet connection.” In practical terms, the clock can continue functioning as a timepiece offline, but it needs a 2.4 GHz internet connection for quote downloads and software updates.
How often do quotes change, and how long does the battery last?
The product page says quote refresh can be set from once every minute to once every hour. A slower interval means fewer quote changes; it also matters for the maker’s battery-life estimate. Author & Co describes battery life as over a week between charges and says it may reach several months under some settings. These are manufacturer claims, not independently measured results, and the actual interval depends on settings.

The available product description does not further define how the vague-quote setting filters or changes passages.
