The “gravity” in the name refers to what a tourbillon is traditionally built to do, and to how Concord presented the design, not to a demonstrated effect in ordinary wear.
When the watch appeared and how many were made
The 2008 date comes from the GPHG model record, which also gives the series as 25 pieces. The published sources cited here do not separately confirm which show first presented the model, so the BaselWorld 2008 label in the title should be read as the period framing rather than a verified debut. The same GPHG record lists a historical price of CHF 295,000 excluding VAT. That figure is what the record states for the model at the time, not a current valuation.

How the external tourbillon works
What a tourbillon is for
A tourbillon is a rotating cage that carries the escapement. The cage turns through all orientations of the watch, so the escapement’s position-dependent error is averaged over the cycle rather than being held in one attitude. That is the sense in which a tourbillon responds to gravity: it is a countermeasure to the way gravity acts on the balance and escapement when the watch is held in different positions. The name and the “defying gravity” language are built on that purpose. Whether a given tourbillon improves timekeeping in practice depends on the movement, and none of the sources cited here measure this for the C1.
Concord’s layout
In the C1 Tourbillon Gravity, the cage is not enclosed inside the movement. The GPHG record describes it as mounted outside the movement and case and linked to the movement through a perpendicular pinion. A Christie’s catalogue entry for a circa-2008 white-gold example describes a one-minute flying tourbillon viewed through an aperture at 5 o’clock in the case band, with the seconds visible at the aperture edge. Because the cage is exposed, the mechanism is part of the watch’s visual identity, and the connection between cage and movement is the core of the design.

The Christie’s specimen details, including the 38-jewel count and dial layout, describe those individual watches. The GPHG record does not give a jewel count, so the 38 figure should not be applied to every C1 Tourbillon Gravity. The Christie’s entry for reference 03.6.40.1036 is a separate stainless-steel edition and should not be read as a variant of the white-gold model’s specifications.
