Baselworld did not return in 2022. In June 2021, organizer MCH Group announced plans to revive the event under its historic name with a redesigned, digitally enabled format. In November, it cancelled the proposed spring 2022 edition, saying it needed more time to develop the concept and understand the needs of manufacturers and independent retailers.
What happened to Baselworld’s 2022 return?
The June 2021 announcement was a plan, not a completed comeback. MCH Group said Baselworld would return in spring 2022, with dates coordinated with Geneva trade fairs. Five months later, the organizer cancelled that edition. The available reporting establishes the announcement and cancellation, not a 2022 fair or a delivered year-round digital platform.
Baselworld’s last completed edition was held in 2019. The 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled. The proposed 2022 event was therefore meant to bring the show back after a multi-year absence, but it never took place. Monochrome Watches reported the June 2021 announcement and the preceding cancellations; National Jeweler reported the November cancellation.
How the proposed Baselworld was meant to differ
MCH Group described a shift away from a conventional large trade-show model toward a platform for smaller and specialized businesses, supported by digital access throughout the year and supplemented by live events. These were announced aims, not confirmed features or evidence of exhibitors signing up.
#1 Best Overall
| Area | Earlier show’s emphasis | June 2021 proposal |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Traditional exhibition | A year-round digital platform for the watch, jewellery and gems industries, supplemented by live events |
| Intended participants | Historically associated with established major brands | Smaller and specialized watch and jewellery manufacturers, plus gemstone traders |
| Retail role | Primarily an exhibitor showcase | A platform also intended to give independent retailers efficient access to manufacturers |
| Timing | Trade-show dates | Spring 2022 dates to be coordinated with Geneva trade fairs |
The plan followed high-profile departures and pressure on the old exhibition format. Monochrome reported that brands had raised concerns about format, modernity and cost; those descriptions reflect that publication’s account, rather than a complete record of every departing brand’s reasons. Its report also quotes Baselworld managing director Michel Loris-Melikoff saying that “the Baselworld brand must remain, but it must fundamentally change”.
Why MCH Group cancelled the spring 2022 edition
In November 2021, MCH Group said it would not hold the proposed spring event because it needed significantly more time to reformulate the show and analyze participants’ needs. National Jeweler also reported continued COVID-related uncertainty and the departure of managing director Michel Loris-Melikoff. The organizer gave no new return date, and the reporting does not establish whether Baselworld later returned in another form.
MCH Group CEO Beat Zwahlen said the company had concluded that a business-to-business-to-consumer platform for mid-sized and specialized manufacturers and independent retailers had a market, but that participants’ needs still required more analysis. He said the company needed “significantly more time to get there.” The stated rationale was additional development time and further understanding of the intended participants—not proof that the redesigned platform had been built and then launched.
