The Baume & Mercier Hampton makes a rectangular steel watch feel considered rather than severe: softened corners, a curved case and vertical dial give it a distinctive profile. The collection dates to 1994, but it is not one fixed design or specification. Current examples range from compact quartz models to larger automatics, so compare individual references—not just the Hampton name.
What makes the Hampton rectangular?
The Hampton’s defining feature is its long, upright case. Instead of a stark geometric slab, it combines softened corners with curved lines and lugs that follow the wrist. That balance gives the watch a dressier, more formal character than a conventional round steel case, while the vertical dial makes the shape unmistakable.
Baume & Mercier dates the collection’s launch to 1994, describing it as an entry into the then-overlooked steel “shape watch” segment. The brand says the design draws on its own watches from the 1930s through the 1960s, including an iconic 1960s model, and associates the Hampton with 1920s Art Deco. It also says the slightly curved case is intended to sit against the wrist and that the collection takes its name from the seaside resort near New York City. These are the maison’s account of the design’s heritage and inspiration, not independent proof of a particular historical lineage. The brand also discusses its Phi emblem and the Golden Ratio as part of the design language. That is best understood as a stated design reference, not a claim that every case has been independently shown to meet a mathematical proportion.

Which Hampton size or movement should you compare?
Start with the reference number. The collection page lists several quartz sizes, plus larger options and automatic models; the collection name alone does not tell you the dimensions, movement, thickness or dial treatment. The page’s assortment is region-specific and can change, so listed models should not be taken as proof of stock in every market. Baume & Mercier’s collection page lists quartz references 10862, 10861, 10860 and 10859 at 28 × 17.75 mm; references 10813, 10795 and 10760 at approximately 35 × 22 mm; and larger references including 10754, 10740, 10741 and 10732.
10795: a compact quartz Classique
For a slim, relatively compact Hampton, reference 10795 is a useful point of comparison. Baume & Mercier reintroduced the Hampton Classique in 2025 with a polished stainless-steel case measuring 35 × 22.2 mm and 6.92 mm thick. Its quartz movement has a stated six-year autonomy. The domed, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, 5 ATM water resistance (approximately 50 m), and black calfskin strap with an alligator pattern are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. 10732: a larger automatic
Reference 10732 shows how different a Hampton can feel on paper. Its steel case measures 43 × 27.5 mm and 9.95 mm thick, substantially larger and thicker than the 10795. It is automatic, with a stated 38-hour power reserve, sapphire crystal and 5 ATM (approximately 50 m) water resistance. Those figures apply to reference 10732; they should not be generalized to the collection. Baume & Mercier’s 10732 material identifies its specifications.
10709: quartz with a jeweled treatment
Reference 10709 is another kind of comparison: a 35 × 22.2 mm quartz Hampton with diamonds on both the dial and case. Baume & Mercier states eight-year autonomy and 5 ATM water resistance for this reference. Its gem setting changes the visual emphasis as much as its compact dimensions do. The 10709 specifications are specific to that model.

How to compare two Hampton references
Use the same checklist for each candidate, and verify the full reference number against the listing. A difference of a few millimeters—or quartz versus automatic—can matter more to fit and ownership than the shared rectangular outline.
- Case dimensions: compare both height and width; a tall rectangular watch can wear differently from a round watch with the same stated width.
- Thickness: check the listed figure, especially when choosing between a slim quartz model and a thicker automatic.
- Movement and reserve: distinguish quartz autonomy, stated in years for the cited models, from an automatic movement’s power reserve, stated in hours.
- Dial and setting: note whether the dial is restrained or has diamonds, and whether gems are also set in the case.
- Strap or bracelet: check what the specific reference includes and whether its attachment system is interchangeable; tool-free replacement is stated for 10795, not every Hampton.
- Water resistance: read the rating for the exact reference rather than assuming all models share it.
Baume & Mercier’s cited examples support useful comparisons, but they do not establish that every reference is currently offered in every country. Check regional availability and the exact configuration before buying.
