A 2023 visit to Geneva watchmaking reveals two complementary kinds of work: Laurent Ferrier’s intimate atelier assembles and finishes watches, while F.P.Journe’s purpose-built Meyrin facility makes dials and cases. The link between them is unusually direct: Cadraniers de Genève, F.P.Journe’s dial workshop, supplies Laurent Ferrier’s dials.
Two Geneva workshops, two different roles
Thor Svaboe’s September 2023 visit, published by Fratello, offers a view of Laurent Ferrier’s atelier and F.P.Journe’s then-new Cadraniers de Genève and Boîtiers de Genève building in Meyrin, near Geneva. They are not competing versions of the same workshop: the first is an intimate watch assembly and finishing environment; the second concentrates on making dials and cases.
| Workshop | Setting and work described | Documented approach |
|---|---|---|
| Laurent Ferrier atelier | A converted family home, where watchmakers and decorators work on movement assembly and finishing. | Small-scale, hands-on work; the 2023 account observed an LF270.01 micro-rotor movement in assembly. |
| Cadraniers de Genève and Boîtiers de Genève | A four-story building in Meyrin for dial and case work. | Traditional craft processes alongside modern machinery, in conditions designed to control temperature and humidity. |
| F.P.Journe Geneva manufacture | A separate central site, not the Meyrin building. | F.P.Journe says it houses movement-component production, decoration, and watchmaking workshops. |
The distinction matters: F.P.Journe’s facility announcement describes Meyrin as part of its effort to bring essential components under closer control, not as the location for all of the brand’s manufacturing. The company said the new building was intended to improve quality and employee well-being rather than increase output (F.P.Journe, June 26, 2023).
Inside Laurent Ferrier’s atelier
During Geneva Watch Days in 2023, Svaboe observed the LF270.01 micro-rotor calibre being assembled and noted perlage on its mainplate. The feature presents the converted family home as an intimate workshop, where watchmakers and decorators handle movement assembly and finishing. Its staffing description belongs to that visit and should not be read as a current headcount.

Robert Bailey, identified in the feature as Laurent Ferrier’s head of sales, said the movement’s first version took about two years to develop and had continued to receive improvements. He also gave a snapshot of the work involved in a watch: “Total work time on a watch is about two weeks.” In Bailey’s September 2023 account, that included around eight and a half days of component decoration, one day of movement assembly and half a day of casing, followed by testing. This describes work time, not a current customer lead time.
The atelier’s approach fits the founder’s stated ideals. Laurent Ferrier’s official biography records that he studied at the École d’Horlogerie de Genève, returned to a Geneva watchmaking company in 1974 and worked there for 37 years, including responsibility for its Creation Department. He launched his own brand in 2010; its first watch received that year’s GPHG award for best men’s watch. In the brand’s official history, Ferrier describes the ambition as: “I nurtured a dream of making watches that represented my horological values: simplicity, precision, and pure, uncluttered beauty”.

Why F.P.Journe built a new Meyrin facility
F.P.Journe announced on June 26, 2023 that Cadraniers de Genève and Boîtiers de Genève had moved into a new building in Meyrin, developed from a former factory. The site was designed with temperature and humidity controls. In the company’s words, “The aim was not to encourage an increase in production, but to focus on quality by developing even more efficient workshops using modern machinery, and to safeguard the well-being of the employees.”
That stated purpose is distinct from an expansion claim: the announcement gives no current output figures. It presents control of dial and case production as a way to preserve traditional know-how and oversee important watch components more closely. Movement components, decoration and watchmaking remain associated with the separate Geneva manufacture.

How a Chronomètre Bleu dial gets its finish
The 2023 Fratello account describes the Chronomètre Bleu’s lacquered dial as a delicate sequence rather than a single finishing operation. Polishing must be controlled because heat can warp the thin dial base. Machining and varnishing follow, then lacquering and pauses in an oven to fix the finish.
F.P.Journe’s head of press relations told Svaboe: “For a series of 100 dials, only 15 to 20 are left at the end.” That is the yield reported in the 2023 interview for one series, not a current or independently audited production statistic. It helps explain why a dial’s visual simplicity can conceal demanding work and material losses at successive stages.

From traditional case-making to CNC work
F.P.Journe Journal 10 traces Les Boîtiers de Genève’s roots to Elinor, founded by Louis Simonnet in Clamart in 1957. Francis Simonnet’s collaboration with François-Paul Journe began with the exterior of a Sympathique clock in 1988. Journe acquired a stake in 2007; the company moved to Switzerland in 2012 and became Les Boîtiers de Genève. The journal says the business moved to Meyrin and came under F.P.Journe’s sole ownership in 2023 (F.P.Journe Journal 10).
The journal describes traditional case-making as a chain of operations: sheet metal may be cut and stamped, heat-treated and rolled to thickness; separate components are finished and then soldered together. The solder joint demands enough precision to be invisible to the eye and undetectable by touch. For small series and unique pieces, the workshop also uses CNC equipment configured for that work. Machines do not remove the need for craft knowledge, particularly when shaping difficult materials such as tantalum.

What the visit shows—and what it does not
The connection between the two makers is concrete: the 2023 feature identifies Cadraniers de Genève as Laurent Ferrier’s dial supplier. The contrast is in the work visitors see. At Laurent Ferrier, the account follows the assembly and finishing of a movement in a compact atelier; in Meyrin, it follows specialized dial and case production in a purpose-built, environmentally controlled facility. Neither source establishes present-day staffing, production totals or delivery times, so the reported workforce and production details should be understood as historical snapshots rather than current operating figures.
