What is the Benrus Type II?
The Type II is a military-rooted field watch distinguished by two rows of Arabic numerals: one for civilian time and one for military time. That information-rich dial sets it apart from the Benrus Type I, which uses a dive-watch-style dial. The U.S. military issued specification MIL-W-50717 in 1970; Fratello Watches reports that Benrus responded with the Type I and Type II in 1972. BENRUS says the company was founded in New York City in 1921 by Benjamin, Oscar and Ralph Lazrus.
The Type II’s appeal is not simply that it looks like a military watch. Its dial makes the military-time scale part of everyday time reading, while its subdued design avoids the more overtly dive-oriented appearance of the Type I. Whether that works for you depends on whether you value the extra information or would rather have a simpler dial.
What Type II models can you buy now?
BENRUS’s collection page lists two current Type 2 models. The official page describes the Type 2 as sharing MIL-W-50717 roots with the Type I and as designed for enhanced 12- and 24-hour legibility. The listed prices are collection-page prices, not confirmation of inventory or a guarantee that the prices will remain unchanged.

Those are current collection listings as accessed October 7, 2026. The available page does not provide enough detail to say how the two variants differ in dimensions, movement, water resistance, materials or other specifications. Do not assume the 2022 review model’s details apply to either current watch.
What the 2022 reissue is like
Fratello’s hands-on review, published August 2, 2022, covered a limited reissue priced at $1,495 at the time and limited to 500 pieces. That is a historical release price and edition size, not the current price or evidence of current availability. The review described the following specifications for that watch:

Fit and proportions
At 42.5 mm wide, 15 mm thick and 47.5 mm lug-to-lug, the reviewed reissue is a substantial watch, not a slim field watch. Fratello’s reviewer called it heavy and chunky but comfortable on their 17 cm wrist. That is one wearer’s experience, not a fit guarantee; wrist shape and personal preference matter as much as the diameter. If you prefer a low-profile watch or have trouble with thicker cases, the 15 mm height is worth considering.
Dial and everyday legibility
The paired numeral rows make the Type II dial denser than a conventional three-hand watch, but the reviewer found it purposeful and clean-looking from a distance. The layout is useful if you want both civilian and military time visible without converting between them. If you prefer a sparse dial, the Type I’s dive-style arrangement may suit you better.

Movement, water rating and upkeep
The reviewed 2022 model used a Soprod P024 automatic movement with a stated 38-hour power reserve. Fratello noted that Benrus did not specify an accuracy figure, so there is no supported accuracy claim to compare against. The reviewer also noted that the reissue used a screw-in caseback, whereas the original had a top-loader construction, and considered the change intended to make servicing easier. That observation does not establish repair cost, service intervals or a guarantee of easier repairs.
Fratello reported a 300 m water-resistance rating for its review watch. A rating is not the same as an independent test or a promise about the condition of a particular watch, especially a used one. Verify the rating and condition for the exact model you’re considering, and follow the manufacturer’s care guidance.

Strap and small design compromises
The 2022 reissue used regular spring bars and 20 mm lugs. Fratello contrasts this with the original’s 19.5 mm fixed bars, which limit ordinary strap changes. The reviewer liked the practical lug holes but was less impressed by the supplied nylon strap’s glossy look and feel, and by its brushed hardware against the bead-blasted case. The reviewer also found the lume restrained rather than especially bright. These are subjective impressions of one example.

The reissue carries forward the Type II’s defining idea and overall tool-watch character, but it is not a parts-for-parts reproduction. Fratello describes the original as having an ETA 2620 movement, an acrylic crystal and bezel insert, fixed bars and a top-loader case. The reviewed reissue substituted a Soprod automatic, sapphire crystal, aluminum bezel insert, spring bars and screw-in caseback. Those changes favor modern materials and conventional strap swaps, while leaving the dual-numeral dial and utilitarian silhouette central to the design.

The historical variants also matter. Fratello reports that both Type I and Type II came in Class A and Class B versions, with Class B omitting lume because tritium could interfere with equipment aboard nuclear submarines. The same review estimates combined production of the two types at 16,000 and says production continued through 1980; treat that production figure as an estimate attributed to Fratello, not a confirmed archival total.
Who should consider the Benrus Type II?
- Consider it if the dual 12/24-hour dial is the main attraction, you like a subdued military aesthetic, and a thick, substantial case suits your wrist.
- Compare it with the Type I if you want the Benrus military lineage but prefer a dive-style dial and a less information-dense face.
- Check the exact generation if movement, dimensions, water resistance, lume, strap attachment or price are deciding factors. The available detailed figures describe only the 2022 reviewed reissue, not the current Type 2 MIL SPEC or UJ.
- Confirm strap compatibility before ordering accessories: the 20 mm spring-bar fit belongs to the reviewed 2022 reissue and should not be generalized to current variants.
Verdict
The 2022 Benrus Type II reissue appears to preserve the original’s strongest idea: a distinctively useful military-time dial in a quiet, purposeful watch. Its modernized construction and spring-bar setup make it a more practical contemporary object in some respects, while the substantial dimensions, restrained lume and reviewer’s strap reservations are real trade-offs. For a current purchase, the key caveat is that BENRUS lists Type 2 MIL SPEC and UJ models but the detailed 2022 specifications cannot establish what those watches offer today.
