The best iPhone HRV app depends on how you measure and what you want to do with the result. Choose Athlytic for Apple Watch-based recovery coaching, HRV4Training for a disciplined morning test, Elite HRV for a free chest-strap workflow, Welltory for broader wellness insights, and Kubios HRV for technical analysis. If you already own an Apple Watch and only want a basic history, Apple Health is the simplest starting point.

Quick comparison

App Best for Measurement source Main output Hardware Main drawback
Athlytic Apple Watch recovery coaching Apple Health and Apple Watch data Recovery and exertion scores Apple Watch required Subscription; not a standalone HRV test
HRV4Training Repeatable morning testing iPhone camera or compatible monitor HRV metrics, trends and guidance No wearable required Less focused on passive tracking
Elite HRV Free chest-strap tracking Bluetooth heart-rate monitor Readiness and HRV analysis Chest strap strongly preferred Apple Watch data has limitations
Welltory Stress and wellness interpretation Camera, Apple Watch or monitor Proprietary wellness scores Several options Can be overwhelming; not medical
Kubios HRV Advanced analysis Smartphone or chest-strap workflows RMSSD, SDNN, frequency metrics and quality indicators Best with compatible sensor More complex than consumer apps
Apple Health Basic history Apple Watch and connected sources Stored HRV readings Apple Watch for Watch-generated data Limited coaching and analysis

What HRV apps actually measure

Heart-rate variability is the variation in the intervals between successive heartbeats. Those beat-to-beat intervals are often called RR intervals. An ECG or a suitable chest strap generally provides the most direct access to that timing data; an iPhone camera and Apple Watch use optical pulse sensing, or PPG.

PPG can be useful, particularly during a controlled, stationary reading, but pulse-rate variability is not identical to ECG-derived HRV in every situation. Movement, finger pressure, temperature, lighting and signal quality can all affect a camera measurement.

The number shown also depends on the metric. Apple Health’s Apple Watch HRV value is generally presented using SDNN, a broad measure of beat-to-beat variability. Many short daily recovery tests emphasize RMSSD, which is commonly used for short-term parasympathetic and recovery tracking. Some apps use lnRMSSD, frequency-domain measures or a proprietary score.

A recovery or readiness score is not HRV itself. It may combine HRV with resting heart rate, sleep, workouts, stress and other inputs. For example, Athlytic interprets Apple Health data, while HRV4Training concentrates more directly on structured measurements and trends. Two apps can therefore show different numbers without either necessarily being wrong. They may use different sensors, recording lengths, timing, artifact correction, metrics or scoring models. Bevel’s documentation provides a useful example of the SDNN-versus-RMSSD distinction.

The best iPhone HRV apps

1. Athlytic: best for Apple Watch recovery coaching

Athlytic is the strongest choice for Apple Watch owners who want an answer to “How hard should I train today?” rather than a technical inspection of every HRV statistic.

It uses Apple Health data and combines HRV, resting heart rate, sleep and workouts into recovery, exertion and training guidance. The app says it compares readings with an individual 60-day baseline, which is more useful than treating a population average as a target. Its site currently lists $29.99 per year or $4.99 per month, with a seven-day trial; App Store pricing can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is important: Athlytic is an interpretation layer, not an iPhone-camera HRV tester. It needs meaningful Apple Watch data, and its recovery score should not be compared directly with another app’s raw HRV value. Athlytic says data does not leave the device; review its current privacy and Health permissions before setup.

2. HRV4Training: best dedicated morning tracker

HRV4Training is the best fit for people who want a consistent, app-led morning protocol without buying an Apple Watch or chest strap. It uses the iPhone camera and also supports compatible Bluetooth heart-rate monitors.

Apple Watch Series 11 [GPS 42mm] Smartwatch with Rose Gold Aluminum Case with Light Blush Sport Band - S/M. Sleep Score, Fitness Tracker, Health Monitoring, Always-On Display, Water Resistant
  • A FULL-FEATURED HEALTH TRACKER—Apple Watch Series 11 gives you invaluable insights about your body, right from your wrist. Take an ECG anytime* and get alerts for a high and low heart rate or an irregular rhythm*—so you can stay closer to your heart. You can also view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app* and be notified of possible sleep apnea.*

  • GET HYPERTENSION NOTIFICATIONS—Did you know that Series 11 can spot signs of chronic high blood pressure? By analyzing how your blood vessels respond to beats of the heart, it can notify you of possible hypertension.*
  • SAFETY FEATURES—A smartwatch that puts your safety first. Series 11 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, automatically help connect you with emergency services, and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
  • A POWERFUL FITNESS TRACKER—With advanced metrics and motivating features like Pacer, Heart Rate Zones, training load, and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone*—Series 11 is made to help everyone stay active, from runners and hikers to strength-training enthusiasts.

Its available protocols include one-, three- and five-minute tests, including orthostatic testing. The app presents metrics such as SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50, LF and HF, and adds tags for sleep, stress, fatigue and other circumstances. Trend, consistency, export and third-party integrations are useful for athletes who want context rather than a single daily verdict. Its App Store listing mentions integrations including TrainingPeaks, Oura, Strava and COROS.

It is more measurement-focused than a lifestyle dashboard. Its App Store listing says Apple Watch support is not direct, although the company documents ways to read certain Apple Watch or Oura data. The U.S. App Store price has displayed approximately $9.99, but confirm the current price and purchase model before buying.

3. Elite HRV: best free option with a chest strap

Elite HRV is a compelling starting point if you already have a compatible Bluetooth chest strap. Its personal mobile app is listed as free with unlimited use and includes readiness tracking, tagging, trends, cloud backup and raw-data export.

Personal Pro is currently listed at $8 per month and adds deeper time- and frequency-domain analysis, Poincaré analysis, correlation charts, integrations and calculated-data export. The app can therefore remain useful as your interest develops.

For serious beat-to-beat analysis, use a compatible monitor rather than assuming Apple Watch data is equivalent. Elite HRV says Apple Health’s Watch HRV readings are collected at random times and offer limited context; Apple Health integration transfers specific morning-readiness data rather than turning every passive Watch reading into a controlled test. Check its Apple Watch guidance and confirm strap compatibility before purchase.

4. Welltory: best for broad wellness insights

Welltory suits users who want HRV placed alongside stress, energy, lifestyle and general wellness information. It can use the iPhone camera, Apple Watch or a compatible Bluetooth monitor and connects with Apple Health.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That breadth is also its weakness. If you want one clean morning HRV number, its proprietary scores and many interpretations may feel excessive. Welltory says medication that affects heart rate can reduce the accuracy of its evaluation, and it explicitly warns that its measurement is not an ECG or a substitute for medical evaluation. It is free to download with premium features and in-app purchases; check current App Store pricing.

Welltory says it stores data in the cloud, so review its privacy policy and permissions rather than assuming that Apple Health access means the vendor stores nothing.

5. Kubios HRV: best for technical analysis

Kubios HRV is aimed at technically minded athletes, coaches and researchers. Its analysis can include RMSSD, SDNN, LF/HF power, PNS index, respiration rate and measurement-quality information. Its documentation also describes a three-minute resting morning measurement performed lying down, breathing normally and without talking.

Kubios is a poor first choice if you only want a simple “train” or “rest” recommendation. Advanced features may involve professional, team or desktop products and paid licenses. Review the current product page for pricing and the exact sensor support in the workflow you intend to use.

6. Apple Health: best built-in baseline

Apple Health is the no-download choice for someone who already owns an Apple Watch and wants to see a long-term HRV history. Health can store data from the iPhone, Apple Watch, compatible apps and connected devices.

It is not a dedicated HRV coaching app. Watch readings may be periodic rather than collected during one standardized morning test, and Health offers less explanation than specialist tools. Still, it is valuable as a central data store even when another app performs the analysis.

Choose by your setup

  • Apple Watch owner wanting training guidance: Athlytic.
  • Apple Watch owner wanting only history: Apple Health.
  • No wearable: HRV4Training for a structured camera test, or Welltory for broader wellness interpretation.
  • Chest-strap owner: Elite HRV for a free starting point; Kubios for technical analysis.
  • Athlete focused on repeatability: HRV4Training or Elite HRV.
  • Research-minded user: Kubios.
  • Privacy-sensitive user: Compare each app’s current local-processing, cloud, account and export policies. Do not label an app private solely because it uses Apple Health.

A chest-strap workflow may be more controlled, but the hardware can cost more than the app. Confirm compatibility: Polar sensors are examples supported in the Elite HRV and Kubios documentation, not a guarantee that every model works with every app.

How to collect useful HRV readings

  1. Measure at approximately the same time each day, ideally immediately after waking and before caffeine, exercise or stressful activity.
  2. Use the same position—lying down or seated—and the same device, app and duration.
  3. Breathe normally unless the app specifies a controlled protocol.
  4. Stay still and do not talk.
  5. For a camera test, follow the app’s instructions, cover the camera and flash with a fingertip if requested, and use light, steady pressure.
  6. For a chest strap, prepare the electrodes, pair it inside the HRV app and confirm that RR or beat-to-beat data is arriving.
  7. Repeat a test that reports poor signal quality or contains obvious artifacts.
  8. Tag poor sleep, illness, alcohol, hard training, unusual stress and medication changes.

Use your personal baseline and multi-day trend, not one isolated number. A visually polished score is not automatically more useful than a simple app that collects consistent readings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why readings differ between apps

  • One app may report SDNN while another reports RMSSD or lnRMSSD.
  • Recording lengths and body positions may differ.
  • One reading may be a deliberate morning test and another a passive Watch sample.
  • Apps may filter artifacts differently.
  • A proprietary recovery score may be mistaken for raw HRV.

When comparing tools, use the same sensor, timing, position and protocol. Even then, compare trends rather than expecting identical values.

What to do about a low reading

One low HRV value does not diagnose illness, overtraining or excessive stress. First check sleep, training load, alcohol, hydration, illness, stress and medication effects, then repeat the measurement under controlled conditions. A sustained departure from your normal baseline is more informative than a single result, but do not let an app score override symptoms or medical advice.

People with an irregular heartbeat or a condition affecting beat timing should ask a clinician whether consumer HRV tracking is appropriate. Seek urgent medical care for symptoms such as chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath or sustained palpitations. These apps are wellness and training tools, not substitutes for an ECG or clinical evaluation; Welltory states this limitation explicitly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an iPhone measure HRV without an Apple Watch?

Yes. HRV4Training and Welltory can use the iPhone camera for a controlled spot measurement. A compatible chest strap is another option and usually provides more direct beat-to-beat interval data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is RMSSD better than SDNN?

Neither is universally better. RMSSD is commonly used for short daily recovery tests, while SDNN is broader. Track the same metric and protocol consistently.

Do I need a Polar H10?

No, but you need a compatible Bluetooth monitor for chest-strap workflows. Confirm the exact model and RR-interval support in the app’s current documentation.

Can HRV apps diagnose illness?

No. Use them for trends and wellness or training context, not diagnosis. Concerning symptoms require medical evaluation.
