A chronograph is a watch with a pusher-operated timing function; its counters and features vary by model, so compare exact references rather than choosing by dial appearance alone. The examples below illustrate solar quartz, light-powered and mechanical options, but none is a universal winner.
What a chronograph watch does
TAG Heuer defines a chronograph as “A chronograph is a watch fitted with an additional function which can be used by operating the pushers (start/stop/reset) to measure continuous or interrupted periods of time.” In practical terms, the pushers control a stopwatch function alongside the ordinary time display. The subdials are not merely decorative: check the manual or specification for what each counter measures and how long it can time.
Layouts and capabilities differ. For example, the Tissot PR516 reference discussed below lists 30-minute and 1/10-second counters, while Seiko’s solar Speedtimer family lists a 60-minute chronograph, a 24-hour subdial and a power-reserve indicator. Those are model-specific details, not a standard shared by every chronograph.
How to choose a chronograph
Start with movement and power
Quartz, solar quartz, light-powered Eco-Drive and mechanical chronographs are all represented in the cited manufacturers’ lineups. Choose based on your preference and the specific watch’s documented functions; the available specifications do not establish one movement type as categorically better. Seiko documents both solar Caliber V192 Speedtimers and mechanical Speedtimers using Caliber 8R46 or 8R48. Citizen describes its US Eco-Drive chronograph collection as powered by light and says the technology does not need a battery. That does not mean a watch is maintenance-free.

Check fit, not just diameter
Case diameter is only one part of fit. Consider thickness, lug width, and the length and shape of the case and bracelet against your wrist. The Tissot PR516 T1494171105100 is listed at 40 mm in diameter, 12.16 mm thick and 20 mm at the lugs. Its page also specifies a quick-interchange bracelet; confirm attachment compatibility for this exact reference before buying a different strap.
Read the counter capacity and functions
Look for the chronograph’s maximum timing interval and resolution, whether a central hand records elapsed seconds, and whether the watch supports named functions such as ADD or SPLIT. These details determine whether the watch suits the intervals you actually want to measure. Do not assume that a three-subdial layout means the same thing across brands.

- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand

Assess legibility and materials
Check dial contrast, markings, luminous material and crystal type in person or in clear product images. Seiko’s solar Speedtimer page discusses legibility and Lumibrite; the cited Tissot PR516 has a sapphire crystal. A marked bezel may help with elapsed-time tracking, but its presence and use depend on the particular reference.
Match water resistance to use
The Tissot PR516 T1494171105100 is rated to 10 bar (100 m / 330 ft). Treat that as the manufacturer’s rating for this reference, not a guarantee that every chronograph is appropriate for every water activity. Check the watch’s own instructions and rating for your intended use.

Verify local price and availability
Brand catalogs vary by region and change over time. Check the exact reference, current local price, stock status and seller before purchase. Tissot’s UK collection is a UK-specific catalog; Citizen’s collection page is US-specific and describes US shipping, returns and a limited warranty. Those terms should not be assumed to apply outside the United States.
Chronograph watches to compare
| Model or collection | Movement and timing details | Fit, materials and use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar SSC813 / SSC913 | Seiko lists Caliber V192, a 60-minute chronograph, 24-hour subdial and power-reserve indicator. | The official page discusses design and legibility, including Lumibrite. | Check the exact regional version, current availability and whether the listed counter layout suits your needs. |
| Tissot PR516 40 mm Quartz Chronograph, T1494171105100 | Quartz PowerDrive; 30-minute and 1/10-second counters, central 60-second hand, and ADD and SPLIT functions. | 40 mm case, 12.16 mm thick, 20 mm lug width, sapphire crystal and 10 bar (100 m / 330 ft) water-resistance rating. The reference page lists a quick-interchange bracelet. | These specifications apply to T1494171105100, not every PR516. Confirm fit, attachment compatibility and local availability. |
| Citizen Eco-Drive chronographs | Citizen’s US collection describes the watches as Eco-Drive and says the technology does not need a battery. | The cited collection page is for the United States; it does not establish that every model has the same dimensions or timing functions. | Compare the individual reference’s counters, size, water resistance, local terms and availability. Do not interpret “does not need a battery” as “never needs service.” |
| Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Mechanical | Seiko lists mechanical models SRQ043 and SRQ039 with Caliber 8R46, and SRQ047 with Caliber 8R48. | The cited page provides historical context for Seiko’s 1969 Speedtimer; specifications vary by reference. | Confirm current regional availability and the exact model specifications before treating one as an option. |
Which chronograph should you choose?
- Consider a solar quartz example if you want a light-powered watch and a defined chronograph display; check the exact Speedtimer reference and its regional availability.
- Consider the cited Tissot PR516 if its 40 mm dimensions and stated counter functions match your needs. Its published specifications belong to reference T1494171105100.
- Explore Citizen Eco-Drive if avoiding routine battery replacement is a priority, while checking the individual model’s functions and your local market terms.
- Look at Seiko’s mechanical Speedtimer references if you specifically want a mechanical option; verify the exact caliber and whether the model is currently sold in your region.
There is no standardized cross-brand test here that establishes a single best chronograph. The useful shortlist is the one that matches your wrist, preferred power source and timing requirements, with a reference-specific specification sheet to confirm the details.
