The best Pixel Watch and Wear OS apps are not necessarily the ones with the biggest phone-app catalogs. They are the apps that make a quick wrist interaction genuinely useful: navigating a turn, starting a workout, paying, checking off a task, changing music, controlling a light, or reading a forecast.
For most Pixel Watch owners, start with Google Maps, Google Wallet, Google Home, Fitbit, Google Keep, Google Messages, Google Calendar, and either Spotify or YouTube Music. Add Strava for structured activity history, komoot or AllTrails for outdoor routes, Todoist for task management, Sleep as Android for advanced sleep features, and a third-party watch-face app only if Google’s own faces do not provide enough choice.

Google Play’s Wear OS directory and featured collections are useful for finding compatible apps, but featured placement and star ratings are not independent tests of quality.
#1 Best Overall
- The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
Install these first
Before adding specialist apps, use the first-party tools that already cover the most common watch tasks.
- Google Maps: Provides turn-by-turn route guidance and is the obvious starting point for walking, driving, and transit directions.
- Google Wallet: Enables contactless payments and, in supported markets, transit or loyalty passes. Your watch, payment card, bank, country, and security setup must all be supported.
- Google Home: Gives quick access to compatible lights, thermostats, locks, and other Google Home devices. It depends on account configuration, permissions, compatible hardware, and internet access.
- Gmail and Google Calendar: Best for quick email triage, short replies, and checking upcoming events rather than composing long messages.
- Google Keep: Excellent for shopping lists, reminders, and checking off existing notes.
- Google Messages: Handles message reading and short replies through voice, smart replies, or watch input.
- Fitbit: The default Pixel Watch health layer for steps, heart rate, workouts, sleep, and wellness information.
- YouTube Music: The natural music choice for people already using YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium. Download and background-listening features depend on the applicable plan.
Google’s Pixel Watch ecosystem overview and Wear OS overview describe this integration across health, navigation, communication, music, payments, and smart-home control. A “best app” list should therefore not replace a capable built-in app merely because a third-party alternative exists.
Best music and podcast apps
Spotify: best all-around third-party audio app
Spotify for Wear OS is the strongest general recommendation for listeners who want music, podcasts, and audiobooks on the wrist. It supports playback controls, Spotify Connect, streaming through the watch’s internet connection, and downloads for Premium subscribers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePremium is required for offline downloads and Premium audio quality. Streaming over LTE, using GPS at the same time, or playing audio for long periods can reduce battery life and consume mobile data. For phone-free listening, download content before leaving and use Bluetooth headphones; the watch speaker is better treated as a convenience than a serious listening system.
YouTube Music: best for Google-account users
YouTube Music fits Pixel Watch owners who already pay for YouTube Premium or use Google’s music catalog. It avoids adding another audio ecosystem, but offline downloads and other useful watch features depend on the current plan and device support.
Audible: best for audiobooks
Audible makes sense for existing Audible members who want spoken audio during walks, commutes, or workouts. Book downloads, membership terms, and watch behavior can vary by country and watch model, so check the current listing before relying on it away from the phone.
SoundCloud and Deezer are reasonable alternatives when you already use those services. They are ecosystem choices rather than universal upgrades over Spotify or YouTube Music.
Best fitness and running apps
Fitbit: best default for Pixel Watch health tracking
Fitbit should be the baseline for Pixel Watch owners. It combines the watch’s health and activity data with the Fitbit phone app, covering steps, heart rate, workouts, sleep, and wellness insights. Some coaching, content, and deeper insights require Fitbit Premium, and available metrics vary by model, market, account, and subscription.

Use “tracks,” “estimates,” and “wellness insights” rather than treating consumer-watch data as a medical diagnosis. Fitbit cannot replace professional medical advice.
Strava: best for training history and social features
Strava is a good choice for runners, cyclists, and walkers who already use Strava or value its broader training history and social ecosystem. It is also useful when you want activities synchronized with other services and devices.
Do not assume Strava is more accurate than Fitbit or another tracker. GPS behavior, heart-rate data, supported activities, offline recording, and phone requirements can change with the watch model and Wear OS release. Choose one primary app to record a workout; running several trackers simultaneously can create duplicate activities and conflicting calorie estimates.
Nike Run Club, adidas Running, and ASICS Runkeeper
Nike Run Club suits runners who prefer guided runs and coaching. ASICS Runkeeper and adidas Running are alternatives for different training plans and service integrations. Before relying on any of them phone-free, confirm that the exact guided content, GPS recording, music controls, and offline behavior work on your watch.
Fitbod and Peloton are more specialized choices for users already committed to those ecosystems; they are not necessary downloads for ordinary Pixel Watch fitness tracking.
Best hiking, cycling, walking, and transit apps
komoot: best for planned outdoor routes
komoot is the best starting point for hikers and cyclists who plan routes in advance and want turn-by-turn guidance on the wrist. Route planning is generally easier on the phone, while the watch is most useful during the activity.
Offline maps, map regions, voice navigation, and premium route features may be paid or region-dependent. Download what you need before leaving, and do not promise offline navigation unless the app explicitly supports it for the selected route. GPS and screen use can materially reduce battery life.
Recommended Free Tools
AllTrails: best for trail discovery
AllTrails is better suited to finding trails, reading reviews, and exploring a large trail database. It is a strong choice for casual and regular hikers who prioritize discovery over the more route-planning-oriented workflow of komoot. Offline maps and other useful features may require membership.
Rank #3
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
Citymapper: best for urban public transport
Citymapper is especially useful for commuters who need transit directions and arrival information at a glance. Coverage and functionality depend heavily on the city, so availability in your location matters more than the app’s general reputation.
Google Maps remains the simpler universal choice for everyday routes, while Citymapper is worth adding when it supports your local transit network.
Best productivity apps
Todoist: best task manager
Todoist is the best third-party task manager for a watch because its useful actions are naturally brief: view what is due, add a quick task, and mark an item complete. Google Play describes meaningful watch use without a continuously connected phone, although syncing and voice entry still depend on connectivity and setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Google Play lists in-app purchases. Complex projects, filters, and detailed editing remain much easier on the phone, and the most advanced features may require a paid plan.
Google Keep: best for lightweight lists
Use Google Keep instead of Todoist when you mainly need shopping lists, short notes, or checklists. It is a particularly good subscription-free starting point for Google-account users.
Gmail, Calendar, and voice recording
Gmail and Calendar are already the best options for users in Google’s ecosystem: read, triage, reply briefly, and check your schedule without creating another sync relationship.
Easy Voice Recorder can be useful for quick reminders. Recording quality, storage, and automatic syncing vary by watch. Recording conversations may also be regulated by local law, so obtain consent where required.
Best sleep and wellness apps
Fitbit: best integrated option
For most Pixel Watch owners, try Fitbit first. It keeps sleep information alongside the rest of the watch’s health dashboard and avoids maintaining a second tracking ecosystem.
Rank #4
- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
Sleep as Android: best for smart alarms
Sleep as Android is the specialist choice for smart alarms and advanced sleep-focused workflows. It is most appealing to users already invested in its Android phone app.
Advanced features may require payment, and overnight tracking can change your charging routine. Test battery consumption for several nights before depending on a smart alarm. No sleep app should be presented as a medical diagnostic tool.
Sleep Cycle is an alternative for sleep analysis, while Calm is more appropriate when guided relaxation and meditation matter more than detailed tracking.

Best weather apps
- Google Weather: Best zero-friction choice for a simple forecast.
- Windy.com: Best for users who want more detailed weather information and already use Windy.
- The Weather Channel or AccuWeather: Useful for existing accounts, alerts, or radar-oriented workflows.
Watch versions usually simplify radar and forecasts compared with the phone app. Location access, frequent refreshes, and complications can affect battery use. Severe-weather alerts and data availability also vary by region.
Best watch-face apps
Pixel Watch Faces: best compatibility baseline
Start with Google’s Pixel Watch Faces for the lowest-risk combination of compatibility, clean design, and system integration. It is the sensible choice if reliability and battery behavior matter more than having thousands of designs.
Facer, WatchMaker, and TIMEFLIK: best for larger catalogs
Facer, WatchMaker, and TIMEFLIK offer broader customization. Catalog size alone does not make one the best: compare complication support, design quality, licensing, subscriptions, and update history.
Check that a face supports the current Watch Face Format and your exact Pixel Watch generation. Older designs may not work on newer models, and animated faces, frequent updates, or many active complications can increase battery use. Third-party faces can also become incompatible after Wear OS or format changes.

Best smart-home, payment, and communication tools
- Google Home: Best for quick control of compatible lights, thermostats, locks, and other favorites.
- Google Wallet: Best for payments where your watch, card, bank, and country are supported. Complete setup before you leave home; LTE does not guarantee payment support.
- Google Messages and Gmail: Best for short replies and triage, not lengthy writing.
- Google Authenticator: The Wear OS version can make codes convenient to reach, but showing authentication codes on your wrist creates privacy and shoulder-surfing risks. Consider whether that fits your threat model.
WhatsApp, Slack, banking, airline, and similar services may deliver notifications without offering a full native Wear OS app. Do not confuse a notification integration with an app installed on the watch.
Best Value
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
Useful niche apps
These are worthwhile when they match a specific interest:
- FotMob: Football and soccer scores.
- Golf Pad: Golf GPS and scorecards.
- UDisc: Disc-golf users.
- Shazam: Identifying music.
- Truecaller: Caller identification.
- Lifesum or MyFitnessPal: Food and calorie tracking.
- Peloton: Existing Peloton members.
- Bitmoji: Personalization.
Games can be fun as novelties, but they are rarely a reason to choose a Wear OS watch or consume limited battery and screen space.
How to install apps on a Pixel Watch
From the watch
- Wake the watch and open Play Store.
- Search using the crown, touch input, or voice input.
- Select the app and tap Install.
- Open it from the confirmation screen or the app launcher.
- Grant only the permissions needed for the feature you intend to use.
- Install or update the phone companion app separately if the service requires one.
Google’s Pixel Watch support guidance confirms that apps can be installed and updated through Google Play on the watch.
From the phone
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app.
- Open its app-management or Play Store area. Labels can change with app versions.
- Search for the Wear OS app and install it to the watch.
- Open the app on the watch and finish sign-in, pairing, or permissions.
The companion app manages watch faces, tiles, alerts, notifications, accounts, app installation, privacy settings, and—where supported—mobile-service setup. It is a management tool, not a substitute for a native watch app.
If an app does not appear or will not work
Common causes include no Wear OS version, an incompatible watch or phone, an older Wear OS release, country restrictions, a different Play Store account country, missing Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/LTE, or developer restrictions for particular models.
- Update the phone, watch, Google Play Store, and Google Play services.
- Confirm that the watch is paired and connected.
- Search from the watch itself, not only from the phone.
- Restart both devices.
- Check the app’s Play Store compatibility panel and required permissions.
- Do not sideload an APK unless you understand the security, update, and privacy risks.
How to choose apps without wasting battery or privacy
Classify connectivity honestly
- Phone-required: The watch is mainly a remote control or notification surface.
- Phone-assisted: Basic watch actions work, but the phone improves setup, GPS, or syncing.
- Watch-capable: Meaningful use is possible through Wi-Fi or LTE.
- Offline-capable: Downloaded content or maps work without an active connection.
LTE only provides a potential data connection. It does not make every app phone-free, and GPS, LTE, screen use, and audio together can drain the battery quickly.
Manage battery-heavy features
GPS navigation, LTE streaming, continuous workout recording, sleep tracking, animated faces, rapid weather refreshes, and an always-active screen are the highest-risk categories. Download music or maps before leaving, prefer Bluetooth or Wi-Fi when practical, avoid two apps recording the same workout, and use complications with sensible refresh intervals.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If sleep tracking leaves the watch dead by morning, the app is not solving the real problem. Establish a charging routine and compare specialist sleep apps with Fitbit’s integrated tracking.
Check privacy before granting access
For health, sleep, location, payment, home, and communication apps, check what data is collected, whether an account is required, where GPS tracks are uploaded, whether health data is shared, and which permissions can be denied. Keep sensitive message previews and authentication codes off a publicly visible watch face when appropriate. A high Play Store rating does not establish good privacy practices.
