The Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour is the best overall jump-hour watch for most buyers. Its current 38mm and 40.5mm 904L-steel versions, 56-hour BC634AH movement, and separate hour, minute, and seconds displays make the unusual complication relatively practical for daily wear.

The MAEN Grand Tonneau Jump Hour is the value-oriented alternative, although the listed variants are marked retired. Christopher Ward offers the cleanest dress-watch layout, RESERVOIR delivers the most dramatic retrograde display, and Bremont’s limited 1776 edition adds collector appeal. Stock and prices are especially important here: verify the exact reference and current availability before paying.

The short answer

The Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour is the best all-round jump-hour watch in this group. It is currently represented in Bremont’s collection, comes in wearable 38mm and 40.5mm 904L-steel cases, and combines a mechanically jumping hour with separate minute and seconds displays. The 38mm model is the most convincing everyday choice: it is 9.1mm thick, measures 44mm from lug to lug, and offers a 56-hour power reserve.

The MAEN Grand Tonneau Jump Hour is the most compelling value-oriented enthusiast option on paper, but its official collaboration page marks the listed variants as retired. The Christopher Ward C1 Grand Malvern Jumping Hour is the cleanest classic dress-watch interpretation, while RESERVOIR is the choice for collectors who want retrograde minutes, a jumping hour, and a power-reserve display in the same watch.

For marketplace research, the useful category term is jump hour watch. That does not mean every digital watch qualifies: in horological usage, the defining feature is a discrete, physically jumping hour indication, usually produced by a mechanical or mechanically inspired display system.

1. Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour: best overall

Bremont’s Terra Nova Jumping Hour is the strongest recommendation for someone who wants a modern mechanical jump-hour watch that can plausibly serve as an everyday watch. Its field-watch design gives the complication a practical setting rather than making it look purely like a fragile dress-watch experiment.

The 38mm version has a 904L stainless-steel case measuring 38mm in diameter, 44mm in length, and 9.1mm in thickness. That combination should appeal to buyers who care about a compact footprint, especially because lug-to-lug length often determines how a watch actually wears more than diameter alone. Bremont also lists a 40.5mm version for buyers who prefer a larger field-watch presence. Both standard sizes use the BC634AH calibre.

The display divides the indications into dedicated areas: the jumping hour appears at 12 o’clock, the minute indication is at 6 o’clock, and running seconds have their own display. The arrangement is more legible than a fully experimental display once the wearer understands the layout. Bremont states that the hour disc changes in under a tenth of a second, so the hour does not slowly creep into position like the hour hand on a conventional watch.

The BC634AH runs at 4Hz and provides a 56-hour power reserve. That reserve is useful in practical terms: if the watch is removed on Friday evening, it has a reasonable chance of still running when picked up again over the weekend. It remains a mechanical watch, however, so the owner should expect the normal considerations of winding, setting, servicing, and positional timekeeping rather than quartz-level convenience.

Choose it if: you want the best balance of current manufacturer support, compact proportions, legibility, and unusual mechanical display.

Think twice if: you strongly prefer reading the time from a conventional hour hand, or if you want a discreet watch that attracts little visual attention.

2. MAEN Grand Tonneau Jump Hour: best value-oriented option

The MAEN Grand Tonneau Jump Hour is an attractive proposition for an enthusiast who wants a mechanical complication without moving immediately into the most expensive or technically elaborate end of the market. Its 34mm steel case, 45mm lug-to-lug measurement, and 9.7mm thickness make it one of the more compact options documented here.

MAEN specifies a modified automatic ST1721 movement, sapphire crystal, 5 ATM water resistance, an integrated FKM rubber strap, and approximately 38 hours of power reserve. Its listed functions are jumping hours and minutes. The tonneau-shaped case gives it a different wrist presence from the round Bremont and Christopher Ward designs, while the rubber strap pushes it toward casual rather than strictly formal wear.

The availability qualification is essential. MAEN’s dedicated collaboration page identifies the MNL.01, MNL.02, and MNL.03 versions as retired. MAEN’s general U.S. website still identifies the Grand Tonneau Jump Hour in its catalogue, but catalogue presence is not proof that a new watch can currently be ordered. Treat it as a used-market or restock-dependent recommendation unless the brand confirms live inventory.

Casio Men's MDV106-1AV 200M Black Dive Watch (MDV106-1A)

  • Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
  • Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
  • Anti-reverse bezel
  • Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)

A secondhand buyer should ask for the exact reference, original purchase documentation, warranty position, service history, and confirmation that the hour display changes correctly. Retired status does not by itself indicate a defect; it simply makes availability, parts support, and future servicing questions more important than they would be for a continuously produced model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: you want compact dimensions, a distinctive tonneau case, sapphire crystal, and a mechanically jumping hour at a more value-oriented enthusiast positioning.

Think twice if: you need a straightforward new purchase with clearly documented current stock and long-term production continuity.

3. Christopher Ward C1 Grand Malvern Jumping Hour: best classic dress layout

The Christopher Ward C1 Grand Malvern Jumping Hour is the most immediately understandable dress-watch interpretation in the shortlist. It uses a conventional minute hand together with a digital-style hour aperture at 12 o’clock. There is no retrograde minute hand to follow and no busy dive-watch architecture competing with the hour display.

Christopher Ward identifies the movement as Calibre JJ01, a modified Sellita SW200-1 developed with watchmaker Johannes Jahnke. The concept is deliberately straightforward: the minute hand makes its normal journey around the dial, and the hour numeral advances discretely when the hour changes. That makes the C1 a good choice for a buyer who wants the novelty of a jumping hour without learning a highly stylized display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its appeal is primarily visual and conceptual in this research. The cited manufacturer material establishes the layout and movement development, but it does not establish current retail stock or a current price. Check Christopher Ward’s live catalogue before treating the C1 as an immediately orderable alternative.

Choose it if: you want a restrained, dressier watch with a normal minute hand and a single jumping-hour aperture.

Think twice if: you are specifically looking for a large, technically dramatic display or a sports-watch case.

4. RESERVOIR Hydrosphere Air Gauge: best unconventional display

RESERVOIR takes the jump-hour concept much further than the simple aperture-and-minute-hand format. Its characteristic display combines a retrograde minute hand, a jumping hour, and a power-reserve indicator. Instead of reading time from a familiar pair of hands, the owner reads several separate indications that reset or advance according to their own visual logic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Hydrosphere Air Gauge places that display in a 45mm dive-watch case. Specialist coverage documents 250-meter water resistance and a helium-release valve, giving the model a genuine tool-watch context even though its time display is anything but conventional. The result is a mechanical object with the presence of a dive watch and the visual behavior of a dashboard instrument.

There is a trade-off. Retrograde minutes are more dramatic but generally take longer to interpret at a glance than a standard minute hand. The 45mm case is also substantially larger than the 34mm MAEN or 38mm Bremont. Buyers should consider not only wrist circumference but also whether they actually want a watch that announces its complication from across the room.

Choose it if: the display itself is the reason you are shopping for a jump-hour watch and you enjoy unusual mechanical indications.

Think twice if: you need a small, conservative office watch or the fastest possible time reading.

5. Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour 1776: best limited-edition angle

The Terra Nova Jumping Hour 1776 is the collector-focused version of Bremont’s concept. Bremont limits it to 250 pieces and created it around the 250th anniversary of the United States, making the edition particularly relevant to U.S. collectors or anyone interested in historically themed limited releases.

The watch uses a 40.5mm 904L-steel case and the BC634 jumping-hour calibre. Bremont’s U.S. collection lists the leather version at $4,300 and the bracelet version at $4,600. Those are publication-sensitive prices, not permanent market values: availability, retailer allocation, and secondary-market demand can change the figure a buyer actually encounters.

The 1776 is not the better choice simply because it is limited. The standard 38mm Terra Nova is likely the more versatile choice for a buyer prioritizing compact wear and everyday practicality. The 1776 makes more sense when the anniversary theme, limited production number, or larger 40.5mm case is part of the appeal.

Choose it if: you want the Terra Nova jumping-hour format with a documented 250-piece production run and a specific U.S. anniversary connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think twice if: you are paying a premium for rarity without caring about the edition’s theme or whether the 40.5mm case suits your wrist.

Other notable jump-hour watches

The following names are important alternatives and references, but the available research does not establish that all of them are equally current, orderable, or readily available. They are best treated as avenues for further research rather than interchangeable recommendations.

  • MeisterSinger Salthora Meta X: a sportier jumping-hour watch with the hour in a window at 12 o’clock and a central minute hand. MeisterSinger’s design-awards material records a Red Dot Design Award in 2018.
  • Chronoswiss Sirius Flying Regulator Jumping Hour: a regulator-style watch in which the hour subdial is replaced by a digital jumping-hour aperture.
  • IWC Tribute to Pallweber Edition “150 Years”: a historically informed mechanical digital display using rotating hour and minute discs. It is one of the clearest examples of the analogue-digital boundary in mechanical watchmaking.
  • Gérald Genta and Bulgari Arena models: significant collector references for combining jumping hours with retrograde indications.
  • Fears Brunswick 40.5 Jump Hour: a dressier British interpretation with a 40.5mm case and a jumping-hour aperture at 12 o’clock.
  • Hautlence Sphere: an especially experimental design in which the hour is represented by a rotating sphere and the minutes are shown retrograde.

These watches broaden the category considerably. They also demonstrate why “jump hour” is not a single visual style: the complication can be subtle and dressy, rugged and field-inspired, retrograde and technical, or almost sculptural.

What is a jump-hour watch?

A jump-hour watch displays the hour as a numeral or discrete indication that changes instantaneously, rather than using an hour hand that continuously travels around the dial. The hour may appear through an aperture, on a rotating disc, or through another digital-style mechanical display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most jump-hour watches use a conventional minute hand. In that arrangement, the minute hand completes its cycle and drives the hour numeral to change at the top of the hour. Other designs use retrograde minutes, in which the hand travels across part of the dial and then returns to its starting point, while the hour changes separately. A few use rotating discs for both hours and minutes.

This is why an ordinary electronic digital watch is not automatically a jump-hour watch in the horological sense. Both may show numerals, but a mechanical jump-hour watch is defined by the way its physical display advances. For this guide, the focus is on mechanical or mechanically inspired watches whose hour indication changes in a discrete jump.

How to choose the right one

1. Start with the display, not the brand

There are three broad formats to compare:

  • Minute hand plus hour aperture: the easiest transition for someone used to a conventional watch. Christopher Ward is the clearest example, and the Bremont uses a related window-based logic with additional seconds indication.
  • Retrograde minutes plus jumping hour: more theatrical and more distinctive, but less immediately familiar. RESERVOIR is the standout example.
  • Fully digital mechanical discs: the most literal analogue-digital hybrid. The IWC Pallweber reference is the notable historical interpretation in this group.

If you have never worn one, look at a clear dial photograph or video and ask yourself whether you can identify the hour, minute, and seconds displays without explanation. Novelty is part of the appeal, but legibility determines whether the watch will actually be worn.

2. Compare lug-to-lug as well as diameter

Diameter alone can be misleading. The documented examples range from the 34mm MAEN to the 38mm Bremont, 40.5mm Bremont and Fears models, and the 45mm RESERVOIR Hydrosphere Air Gauge. The MAEN’s 45mm lug-to-lug measurement and the Bremont 38’s 44mm length are especially useful reminders that a compact diameter can still have meaningful wrist coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For tonneau, rectangular, or unusually shaped cases, measure the watch from the farthest point of one lug or case end to the other. Also account for thickness, strap integration, and how far the case extends beyond the wrist. The 9.1mm Bremont 38 and 9.7mm MAEN are relatively restrained on paper; the 45mm RESERVOIR is a different proposition altogether.

3. Treat availability as part of the specification

A technically appealing watch is not a practical recommendation if it cannot be sourced with credible warranty and service support.

  • Bremont: the current U.S. collection lists the Terra Nova Jumping Hour in 38mm and 40.5mm forms, along with other variants including DLC. This is the strongest current manufacturer-availability case in the research, but live stock should still be checked.
  • MAEN: the dedicated page labels the listed Grand Tonneau Jump Hour variants retired. Confirm a restock or approach the used market with appropriate documentation and service questions.
  • Christopher Ward: the documented manuals and product information establish the C1 and its movement, but they do not by themselves confirm current retail inventory.
  • Limited editions: the Bremont 1776’s 250-piece limit makes stock and condition especially important. A sold-out official page does not automatically make a secondary-market premium reasonable.

4. Understand the servicing implications

A jumping-hour display adds a specialized indication system beyond a conventional three-hand movement. Before buying, ask the brand or authorized watchmaker:

  • Who services the complete watch and the jump-hour module?
  • Are movement parts and display components still available?
  • Does the warranty apply to a secondhand purchase or only the original buyer?
  • What documentation should accompany a retired or limited-production model?
  • Can the service center support the exact reference, not merely the base movement?

This is particularly important for the retired MAEN variants and for unusual or limited-production watches. The presence of a modified or specialized movement is not evidence of a service problem; it is simply a reason to verify support before committing money.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Match water resistance to actual use

Water resistance varies significantly across the examples. MAEN specifies 5 ATM, which is a modest everyday rating rather than a reason to treat the watch as a serious dive instrument. The RESERVOIR Hydrosphere Air Gauge is documented at 250 meters and includes a helium-release valve, placing it in a very different category. Do not infer the water-resistance rating of one model from another model in the same broad category; check the exact reference.

6. Check the power reserve, but do not make it the only criterion

The Bremont BC634AH offers 56 hours, while the MAEN’s modified ST1721 is listed at approximately 38 hours. A longer reserve can make a mechanical watch easier to live with when it is rotated with other watches, but display legibility, case fit, availability, and service support are more important than a reserve number in isolation.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Confirm that the hour actually jumps. Make sure the listing describes a mechanical or mechanically inspired jumping-hour display rather than simply calling any digital watch “jump hour.”
  2. Identify every indication. Know where the hour, minute, seconds, and power reserve are shown before buying. A photo that looks striking may be less readable in daily use.
  3. Measure the case properly. Record diameter, lug-to-lug length, thickness, and strap width. This is especially important for the 45mm RESERVOIR and tonneau-shaped MAEN.
  4. Verify the exact movement. The key documented calibres include Bremont’s BC634AH, MAEN’s modified ST1721, and Christopher Ward’s JJ01 based on the Sellita SW200-1.
  5. Check current stock with the manufacturer or authorized retailer. Do not assume that a catalogue page means a watch is orderable.
  6. For used watches, request evidence. Ask for the reference number, service history, purchase records, warranty details, and a video showing the hour transition.
  7. Check water resistance against your use. The MAEN’s 5 ATM and the RESERVOIR’s documented 250m rating should not be treated as equivalent.
  8. Price the service risk honestly. Ask in advance who can service the jump-hour system and whether parts remain available, especially for retired or limited models.

Which jump-hour watch should you buy?

Buy the 38mm Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour if you want the most balanced modern option: compact dimensions, a 56-hour reserve, a clear three-indication layout, and the strongest evidence of current manufacturer availability.

Choose the MAEN Grand Tonneau Jump Hour if its 34mm tonneau case and value-oriented mechanical complication appeal to you and you are comfortable confirming a restock or buying used. Choose the Christopher Ward C1 Grand Malvern Jumping Hour if you want the least intimidating, most traditional display. Choose RESERVOIR if the retrograde minute, power reserve, and dive-watch case are the point of the purchase rather than secondary details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finally, select the Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour 1776 when the 250-piece limit and U.S. anniversary theme matter to you. Its limited status is a collecting feature, not a substitute for checking fit, condition, price, and service support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a jump-hour watch the same as a digital watch?

No. A conventional electronic digital watch displays time with numerals, but it is not automatically a jump-hour watch in the horological sense. A jump-hour watch uses a discrete, physically advancing hour indication, usually in a mechanical or mechanically inspired display.

Are jump-hour watches difficult to read?

The simplest designs are relatively easy to learn because they pair a familiar minute hand with an hour aperture. Retrograde-minute and multi-display watches such as RESERVOIR take longer to read at a glance, but their unusual display is part of the appeal.

Is the MAEN Grand Tonneau Jump Hour still available?

The MAEN Grand Tonneau Jump Hour remains documented in MAEN’s catalogue, but the brand’s dedicated collaboration page marks the listed MNL.01, MNL.02, and MNL.03 variants retired. Confirm live stock or look for a documented used example rather than assuming a new watch is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is special about the Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour 1776?

The Bremont 1776 uses the BC634 jumping-hour calibre in a 40.5mm 904L-steel case and is limited to 250 pieces. Bremont’s U.S. collection lists leather and bracelet versions, but prices and stock should be checked before purchase.

What should I check before buying a used jump-hour watch?

Ask who services the jumping-hour mechanism, whether parts remain available, what warranty applies, and whether the service center supports the exact reference. These questions matter most for retired, limited-production, and heavily modified watches.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour 38mm is the best overall recommendation for a current, wearable mechanical jump-hour watch. The MAEN is the intriguing value pick but should be treated as retired or used-market dependent; Christopher Ward is the classic dress alternative; RESERVOIR is the high-concept choice; and the Bremont 1776 is the limited-edition option.
