The best Marine Nationale strap is the one that matches your watch’s lug width and your wrist’s measured circumference—not the diameter printed in the watch specifications. For most 20 mm watches and wrists around 165–205 mm, a 20 mm elastic strap is the safest starting point. Smaller wrists are better served by a shorter model such as the 125–170 mm Gnomon option, while very large wrists need a long adjustable design such as the 150–250 mm ZULUDIVER AIRBORNE. Measure the lug gap first, then compare the strap’s stated wrist range, thickness, adjustment hardware and any fixed-lug requirements.
What is a Marine Nationale watch strap?
A Marine Nationale strap is an elastic, usually single-pass watch strap associated with French naval-diver equipment and parachute-elastic practice. Instead of two separate pieces joined to a buckle, a single length passes under the watch and wraps around the wrist. Many modern versions use braided elastic with a tied tail, sliding keeper or buckle.

TUDOR’s official Pelagos FXD material says, “Historically, the French Navy had TUDOR watches delivered without bracelets and then fitted them with their own straps, handmade or otherwise.” The same material describes black straps made from a single piece of braided nylon and, less commonly, handmade parachute-elastic straps. Modern products therefore range from reproductions that emphasize that history to contemporary elastic straps that simply use the same general construction.
Construction affects comfort and fit. Elastic can accommodate wrist movement and normal swelling without locking you into fixed buckle holes. A wider braided cord may feel softer and more flexible, while a thicker webbing strap can add stability under a heavy dive watch. Hardware, tail management and the maker’s stated water guidance matter as much as the historical label.

How do I measure the correct Marine Nationale strap size?
Measure the internal distance between the watch’s two lugs in millimetres. That measurement is the nominal strap width: a 20 mm lug gap takes a 20 mm strap, and a 22 mm gap takes a 22 mm strap. Case diameter is not a substitute; two watches with the same case diameter can have different lug widths.
- Remove the existing strap if it obscures the lug interiors.
- Place a ruler or digital caliper between the inside faces of the lugs, not across their outside edges.
- Record the nearest whole millimetre and select that width where the maker offers it.
- For an unusual 19 or 21 mm gap, use the exact width if available rather than assuming a 20 or 22 mm strap will look or sit correctly.
- Check whether the seller’s wrist range is measured with the watch installed. A thick case, protruding crown or broad fixed lugs can change the amount of strap needed around your wrist.
CNS lists Marine Nationale widths of 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 24 mm. NDC describes its approximately 21 mm strap as suitable for 19–22 mm lugs, but that is a stated compatibility range rather than proof that every 19 mm watch will have a perfect visual fit. When a maker lists an exact width, that remains the least ambiguous choice.
Which Marine Nationale strap size suits my wrist?
Use your wrist circumference as a screening measurement, then confirm the manufacturer’s adjustment method and whether the watch case is included in the published range. The following options are the clearest documented matches in the available product specifications.
| Wrist circumference | Most suitable documented direction | Published details and limits |
|---|---|---|
| About 125–170 mm (5–6.7 in) | Shorter 20 or 22 mm elastic model, such as Gnomon OG Elastique | Gnomon states approximately 125–170 mm and a 220 mm strap length without the buckle. The usable fit still depends on the watch case and how the tail is secured. |
| About 165–205 mm (6.5–8 in) | 20 mm Escudo model | Escudo states a 16.5–20.5 cm range for its 20 mm strap. |
| About 171–190 mm (6.75–7.5 in) | Erika’s Originals Sahara MN ready stock | Watch Obsession states that its ready-stock pieces are made for 171–190 mm wrists and are offered in 20, 21 and 22 mm widths. |
| About 150–250 mm (6–10 in) | Long, adjustable 20 or 22 mm AIRBORNE-style strap | ZULUDIVER states 150–250 mm of adjustment, giving the broadest documented range for a single standard model. |
| XS through XL, with larger custom sizing | NDC Original | NDC says its 28 cm standard length fits most XS–XL wrists and that custom XXL lengths are available. |
These ranges overlap because elastic straps are adjustable rather than cut to one exact circumference. A wrist near the lower or upper boundary should leave enough tail for the keeper without forcing the elastic to its limit. If the watch has a tall case or long end links, choose a model with additional adjustment rather than relying on the final millimetre of a stated range.
What width should I choose for my watch?
18 mm watches
Choose 18 mm for smaller sport, dress and vintage watches whose lug gap actually measures 18 mm. CNS lists an 18 mm option. Do not downsize a 20 mm watch to 18 mm merely to make the strap appear slimmer; the gap at each side can leave the watch unstable and visually misaligned.

19 mm watches
Nineteen millimetres is common on some vintage and in-between lug designs but less widely stocked. CNS lists 19 mm, and NDC states that its approximately 21 mm strap can suit 19–22 mm lugs. Check the maker’s fit statement and return policy because a deliberately broad strap may overhang a narrow case.

Twenty millimetres is the broadest mainstream choice. The sizing references use watches such as the Omega Seamaster, Seiko SKX and Rolex Submariner as 20 mm examples. If your watch measures 20 mm and your wrist is in the middle of the available ranges, a 20 mm strap is usually the easiest size to source and replace.
21 mm watches
Use 21 mm when the lug gap measures 21 mm. CNS explicitly lists that width, and Erika’s Originals offers a 21 mm Sahara option. A 21 mm strap avoids the visible side gaps that can occur when a 20 mm strap is fitted to a wider lug opening.
22 mm watches
Twenty-two millimetres is typical of larger dive and sport watches, including the Tudor Pelagos and Marathon GSAR examples cited in the sizing material. TUDOR’s Pelagos FXD fabric strap is 22 mm. Confirm the exact lug measurement because model families can contain different generations or references with different widths.
24 mm watches
Twenty-four millimetres is intended for oversized sport or dive watches. CNS lists 24 mm, but the larger the strap, the more important thickness and hardware become: a narrow, lightweight buckle can feel out of proportion on a large case.

Which Marine Nationale straps are best for different use cases?
No single model wins every category. The practical choice depends on your lug width, wrist range, desired thickness and whether provenance or custom sizing matters more than a broad catalogue of widths.
| Model or range | Best fit situation | Key documented specifications | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| CNS Marine Nationale | Shoppers who need an uncommon lug width | 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 24 mm widths; braided elastic with tied-tail adjustment | Choose the exact width and verify the current length and hardware details for the specific listing. |
| NDC Original | Those prioritising stated parachute-elastic provenance or custom sizing | Approximately 21 mm; genuine Marine Nationale parachute-elastic claim; 28 cm standard length; custom XXL lengths | The approximately 21 mm width is stated to suit 19–22 mm lugs, so it is not an exact-width option for every watch. |
| Gnomon OG Elastique | Small wrists | 20 or 22 mm; 1.5 mm thick; approximately 125–170 mm wrist range; 220 mm length without buckle | The short published range is the strongest documented small-wrist match, but the case must still be considered. |
| Escudo 20 mm | Typical 20 mm watches and mid-size wrists | Stated 165–205 mm (16.5–20.5 cm) wrist range | Only a 20 mm width is identified in the cited specification. |
| ZULUDIVER AIRBORNE | Large wrists or one strap shared between several watches | 20 or 22 mm; stated 150–250 mm adjustment | The broad range reduces the risk of running short, but excess tail and keeper position may be more noticeable on a small wrist. |
| Erika’s Originals Sahara MN | Users who want a 20, 21 or 22 mm strap with custom compatibility options | 20, 21 and 22 mm widths; 2.0 mm thickness; approximately 6.25–7.5 inch range for the cited ready stock | Watch Obsession’s ready-stock range is narrower than the long AIRBORNE range; custom options are a separate consideration. |
How do thickness, adjustment and hardware change the fit?
Thickness under the case
A 1.5 mm strap such as the documented Gnomon thickness usually creates less lift under the case than a 2.0 mm strap such as the documented Erika’s Originals Sahara specification. The difference is small on paper but noticeable when a watch has short spring bars, a low caseback or a clasp that already sits close to the wrist. Thick elastic can also hold a heavy diver more securely, while thin elastic is easier to tuck under a shirt cuff.
Tied tails and keepers
A tied-tail design lets you set tension continuously and then secure the remaining tail with a keeper. It avoids the fixed-hole increments of a leather or conventional nylon strap, but the tail needs enough room to lie flat. On a very small wrist, a long tail can bunch under the case; on a large wrist, a short tail can pull out of the keeper during movement.
Buckles and metal hardware
Gnomon lists 316L hardware. That stainless-steel grade is widely used in watch hardware, but the presence of 316L does not by itself establish a strap’s water rating or guarantee that every component in a particular listing uses the same material. Compare buckle shape, keeper construction and corrosion guidance when the watch will see salt water.

Will a Marine Nationale strap fit a Tudor Pelagos FXD or an Omega Seamaster?
It can, provided the strap width and attachment method match the specific watch. A Pelagos FXD uses fixed strap bars, so a conventional spring-bar strap cannot be installed by simply removing and replacing spring bars; the strap must be designed to pass through the fixed structure or use a compatible adapter. A standard Omega Seamaster reference commonly uses a 20 mm lug width in the cited examples, but verify your exact reference before ordering.

For any watch with fixed bars, integrated guards or unusual lug geometry, inspect the strap path before purchase. The strap must be thin enough to pass through the opening, wide enough to sit securely and long enough to wrap around the wrist without excessive tail. Do not force a spring-bar end into a fixed-bar opening or modify the watch case.
How do I install and adjust a Marine Nationale strap?
- Confirm the attachment type. Check whether your watch uses removable spring bars, drilled lugs or fixed bars. Follow the watch maker’s instructions for removing spring bars; protect the case from tool slips.
- Orient the strap. Place the buckle where you want it on the underside of the wrist and identify the strap’s keeper and tail. On a single-pass strap, the watch normally sits between the buckle side and the returning tail.
- Thread under the watch. Slide the strap through both lug openings or around the fixed bars, keeping the buckle and keeper facing the intended wrist position. Make sure the elastic is not twisted.
- Set the watch position. Centre the case on top of the wrist before tightening. A diver with a crown or crown guards may need a slightly offset position for comfort.
- Adjust tension gradually. Pull the tail until the watch is secure but the elastic does not leave deep pressure marks. You should be able to move a fingertip under the strap without the case sliding freely.
- Secure the tail. Route the remaining length through the keeper or buckle system specified by the maker. Keep the tail flat; a folded or twisted tail creates a pressure point.
- Check movement. Flex the wrist, rotate the hand and inspect both lug areas. If the watch shifts, the tail slips or the strap rubs a lug edge, remove it and reassess the width or adjustment rather than pulling harder.
Are Marine Nationale straps suitable for water?
Elastic construction alone does not create a water rating. Look for the individual maker’s statement about splash, swimming or salt-water use, and treat the strap separately from the watch’s own water-resistance rating. A watch rated for diving does not automatically make an un-rated textile strap suitable for prolonged immersion.
After salt or chlorinated water, follow the strap maker’s care instructions. If none are supplied, a conservative approach is to rinse the strap with fresh water, remove visible residue and allow it to dry fully away from direct heat before wearing it again. Inspect elastic, stitching, keepers and buckle for fraying or corrosion; replace the strap if structural damage appears.

- Exact lug width: Match 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 or 24 mm to the measured gap.
- Published wrist range: Compare your circumference with the maker’s stated minimum and maximum, and ask whether the watch case is included.
- Length convention: Some listings state strap length without the buckle, as Gnomon does with its 220 mm figure.
- Thickness: Check clearance under the case and around the buckle, especially below 2 mm or on watches with short spring bars.
- Adjustment style: Decide whether you prefer a tied tail, sliding keeper or buckle and allow room for the remaining tail.
- Hardware: Note the stated metal, buckle dimensions and corrosion guidance; Gnomon identifies 316L hardware.
- Provenance: Treat “genuine Marine Nationale” as a maker’s claim unless the seller explains its documentation. NDC describes its product as made from Marine Nationale parachute elastic.
- Special lugs: Confirm compatibility for fixed bars such as those on the Pelagos FXD, integrated guards and any adapter system.
- Returns and stock: Product availability, prices and return terms change, so verify them on the current listing before ordering.
How do I fix common fit problems?
The strap is too loose even at its shortest setting
First confirm that your wrist measurement and the product’s measurement convention match. If the watch case is not included in the published range, a short model may effectively run out of adjustment; choose a shorter strap or a design with a different keeper arrangement rather than tying an unsafe knot around the case.
The strap is too tight at its longest setting
Check that the strap is routed correctly and not twisted around a fixed bar. If the tail still cannot reach the keeper without excessive tension, move to a long adjustable model; the documented ZULUDIVER 150–250 mm range and NDC custom XXL option are the clearest directions for larger wrists.

There are visible gaps beside the lugs
Measure again at the narrowest internal point. A 19 or 21 mm watch fitted with a 20 mm strap can show a gap even when the strap feels secure. Use the exact width where available, or only choose a broader model when the manufacturer explicitly states that it suits your lug range.
The watch slides toward the hand
Reduce slack incrementally and check that the caseback is centred. If the strap is already tight but the watch still moves, a very thin strap may not provide enough support for the case; a thicker construction or a different keeper position may improve stability.
The tail or keeper irritates the wrist
Reposition the buckle so the tail sits on the underside rather than directly over the wrist bone. A shorter model can reduce excess material, while a thinner 1.5 mm option may help under a cuff. Stop wearing the strap if the elastic or hardware is damaged.
Which strap is the safest overall choice?
For a standard 20 mm watch and a wrist in roughly the 165–205 mm range, start with a 20 mm model whose published range surrounds your measurement; Escudo is the clearest documented match in that band. Choose Gnomon when a 125–170 mm wrist is the priority, ZULUDIVER AIRBORNE when you need 150–250 mm adjustment, Erika’s Originals when 20/21/22 mm widths and custom compatibility are useful, and NDC when stated parachute-elastic provenance or custom XXL sizing matters. For every watch, the decisive order is lug width, wrist range, thickness, attachment method and only then historical styling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the strap length include the buckle?
Not always. Gnomon states its approximately 220 mm length without the buckle, while other sellers may publish a total length or only the usable range. Compare like-for-like measurements before deciding that two straps are the same size.
Can I cut a Marine Nationale strap that is too long?
Do not cut elastic or webbing unless the manufacturer specifically provides trimming and heat-sealing instructions. An unsealed cut can fray and weaken the strap, and a shortened tail may no longer engage the keeper securely.
Can I swim with any Marine Nationale strap?
No. Elastic construction is not a water-resistance certification. Use only the immersion guidance supplied for the exact strap, and remember that the strap’s rating is separate from the watch’s case rating.
Why does my elastic strap feel different in cold weather?
Elastic materials can feel less flexible when cold and more relaxed after warming. Allow the strap to reach room temperature, then readjust it lightly rather than pulling it to maximum tension.
