What are the best racing watches? There is no single winner: the right choice depends on wrist fit, movement, dial legibility, timing features, budget and whether you want motorsport heritage or a watch for everyday wear. The strongest current starting points supported by published specifications are Tissot’s 2026 T-Race collection and Seiko’s Prospex Speedtimer family. Treat both as shortlists, not automatic recommendations: confirm the exact reference, its functions and local availability before buying.

What makes a watch a racing watch?

A racing watch is usually a chronograph—a watch with a stopwatch function for measuring elapsed intervals—and often has a tachymeter scale. But the label also covers motorsport-inspired design and brand or event associations; it does not guarantee that a watch is a purpose-built instrument for timing a race. Watches of Switzerland’s guide to racing watches discusses the category’s functions and history.

A tachymeter works with the chronograph to estimate average speed over a known distance. On a conventional scale, if you time one mile in 45 seconds, the chronograph hand points to 80—an estimate of 80 miles per hour. The calculation is 3,600 divided by elapsed seconds for a one-unit distance per hour. You need to know the distance and use matching units; the scale does not measure a car’s speed on its own. It is a useful timing calculation and a classic design feature, though modern drivers generally use dashboard technology for speed calculations. Teddy Baldassarre’s tachymeter explainer provides the worked example.

Current racing-watch options to shortlist

Option Published details What to verify before buying
Tissot T-Race MotoGP Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition Tissot’s 2026 announcement describes a 45 mm stainless-steel case, Valjoux A05.951 skeleton movement, forged-carbon insert on a black PVD-coated bezel, tachymeter scale, Super-LumiNova accents and red rubber strap. The brand says the edition comprises 2026 individually engraved pieces. Exact reference, current price, availability in your market, and whether the 45 mm case suits your wrist.
Tissot T-Race MotoGP Quartz Chronograph Limited Edition Tissot’s 2026 announcement describes a 45 mm quartz MotoGP chronograph limited edition. Exact reference, published functions and materials, current price and local availability.
Three additional Tissot T-Race quartz chronographs The 2026 announcement covers three quartz chronographs, including two 38 mm models. Which specific model is offered in your market, and its individual dimensions, dial layout, strap and functions.
Seiko Prospex Speedtimer family Seiko’s US site identifies Prospex Speedtimer as a product family; the family page does not establish enough model-level detail to recommend a particular reference. On the individual official product page, confirm the reference’s movement, dimensions, chronograph operation and whether it has a tachymeter.

Tissot’s specifications and edition information come from its 2026 T-Race announcement. Seiko’s official US Speedtimer family page is a useful starting point, not a substitute for checking an individual watch. The Tissot announcement is for Ireland; it does not establish prices or stock in other markets.

How to choose the right racing watch

Start with size and wrist fit

Compare case diameter and thickness for the exact reference, then consider how the watch sits on your wrist. The announced T-Race MotoGP automatic is 45 mm, while two of the other announced quartz chronographs are 38 mm. Those are model dimensions, not a guarantee of comfort: case shape, lug length, strap and personal preference affect fit.

Choose the movement that suits you

Quartz and automatic describe different ways a watch is powered; neither is inherently the better choice. The T-Race announcement includes both types. Decide which movement you prefer, then check the specifications of the exact reference rather than assuming all watches in a collection share the same mechanism.

Check that the timing features work for your needs

  • Confirm that the chronograph measures the elapsed intervals you care about and that its pushers and counters match the stated function.
  • If you want a tachymeter, check that the scale is present and legible, and that its range and markings make sense for the intervals and distance units you intend to use.
  • Look at contrast, hand shape, lume and counter placement. A busy motorsport dial can look distinctive but may be harder to read at a glance.

Match the watch to how you will wear it

Bracelets, leather and rubber or silicone straps have different looks and wearing characteristics. Consider whether the watch is primarily for daily wear, an enthusiast collection or an occasional motorsport connection. Check the exact model’s published water-resistance rating if that matters to you, and do not treat a rating as proof that the watch is suitable for every water activity.

Verify the exact reference, price and stock

Before purchasing, match the retailer listing to the manufacturer’s reference and specifications. Check regional pricing, availability, movement, dimensions, strap and timing functions; family names alone are not precise enough to compare watches reliably.

Motorsport heritage and limited editions

Some racing watches are linked to motorsport through an event or brand partnership as well as their design. Goodwood’s 2025 announcement named TAG Heuer Official Timing Partner for the Festival of Speed and described a Carrera Chronograph x Festival of Speed edition with a TH20-00 movement, 42 mm case and a limited run of 100 pieces. The release said Goodwood Road Racing Club members would be offered it before general sale. Those are details from a dated 2025 announcement, not confirmation of current stock or availability. Goodwood’s press release has the announcement.

A July 2026 WatchTime editorial list also names the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, TAG Heuer Carrera, IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 and Bell & Ross BR 05 Chrono A523 among notable racing watches. Its prices and specifications are date-bound editorial reporting, so verify them with the brand or seller before relying on them. Read WatchTime’s July 2026 list.
