Garmin’s Instinct 2X Solar is the GPS-enabled option here; Casio’s PRO TREK PRW-35 and PRG-340 lines center on outdoor sensors. Solar charging can extend battery life, but it is not a promise of unlimited power in shade or during demanding GPS use.
Which type of solar watch fits your hike?
Choose GPS if you want recorded activities
A GPS multisport watch can record an activity and provide GPS-based features. Garmin’s Instinct 2X Solar combines GPS with ABC sensors—altimeter, barometer, and compass—so it suits hikers who want activity recording as well as outdoor readings. Check the battery estimate for the specific GPS mode you plan to use rather than relying on smartwatch or standby figures.

Choose an ABC watch for focused field readings
Casio PRO TREK models such as the PRW-35 and PRG-340 focus on compass, altitude, and atmospheric pressure readings. The PRW-35-1A also includes a thermometer. These instruments can supplement a map and route plan, but wrist readings are not a replacement for navigation tools or sound weather judgment.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Garmin Instinct 2X Solar | GPS activity recording plus outdoor sensors | Garmin lists GPS, an altimeter, barometer, 3-axis electronic compass, 50 mm polymer case, Power Glass solar charging, and a 10 ATM water rating. | Garmin lists up to 150 hours in maximum GPS mode and describes runtime as unlimited with solar under its stated qualifications. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results; the solar claim depends on conditions and mode. | Its listed 50 mm case may feel large on smaller wrists. Garmin’s launch release says the lens produces 50% more energy than the standard Instinct 2 Solar lens and says the watch was tested to U.S. military 810 standards for thermal, shock, and water resistance; these are manufacturer claims. |
| Casio PRO TREK PRW-35-1A | Compact-feeling ABC functionality without GPS route recording established on the product page | Casio lists Tough Solar, Multiband 6 radio control, digital compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer, 100-meter water resistance, and resistance to temperatures down to -10°C (14°F). | Casio lists Tough Solar charging; a comparable GPS-mode runtime is not stated on the cited product page. | Casio specifies 45 g and a 51.2 × 44.6 × 13 mm case. The official page marks this exact model “Old Model,” so check current regional stock and any successor before buying. |
| Casio PRO TREK PRG-340-1 | Solar-powered outdoor ABC readings | Casio’s U.S. product page lists Tough Solar, compass, altimeter, barometer, 100-meter water resistance, and -10°C low-temperature resistance. | Casio lists Tough Solar power; a comparable GPS-mode runtime is not stated on the cited product page. | The reviewed product page does not establish GPS route tracking. Verify the exact regional model and current retail status. |

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to choose for your route and conditions
Match battery mode to the longest day
For a GPS watch, compare the manufacturer’s estimate for the GPS mode you expect to use with the length of your activity. Garmin’s up-to-150-hour figure applies to maximum GPS mode on the Instinct 2X Solar; its “unlimited with solar” statement is conditional, not a guarantee for every hike. Casio’s cited product pages do not provide a directly comparable GPS runtime, and the sensor-focused Casio models above should not be treated as GPS trackers on the basis of those pages.
Be realistic about solar exposure
Solar charging depends on available light and the watch’s operating mode. A watch under sleeves, in dense shade, or used heavily for GPS may not receive the exposure needed to offset its power use. Treat solar as a potential runtime extension rather than a substitute for charging before a trip.

Check size, readability, and controls
Case dimensions and weight matter when a watch stays on your wrist all day. Casio’s PRW-35 series description highlights large, dedicated function buttons, which can be useful when operating the watch with gloves. Compare the exact model’s display and controls in person if possible, particularly if you expect to use it in cold weather or with wet hands.
Use water and cold ratings within their stated limits
The cited Casio PRW-35-1A and PRG-340-1 pages list 100-meter water resistance and low-temperature resistance to -10°C. Garmin lists a 10 ATM water rating for the Instinct 2X Solar. These are model-specific manufacturer specifications; check the exact watch’s instructions for care and use rather than assuming a rating covers every activity or exposure.

For a single watch that records GPS activities and also has ABC sensors, the Garmin Instinct 2X Solar is the clearest fit among these options, provided its size and mode-specific battery expectations work for you.
