For a budget under $300, the Seiko SSB425 is the pick: Seiko USA lists it at $265. If you can spend more and want a solar movement with a sapphire crystal, the Prospex Speedtimer SSC813 is the step up. Seiko’s Middle East site lists it at USD 680, but a current US list price for the SSC813 was not established for this guide, so check Seiko USA or an authorized dealer before you buy.
What “panda” means in this guide
“Panda” is a informal name for a chronograph with a light dial and dark subdials, the look that gives the design its black-and-white contrast. It is not a formal Seiko model family. Any chronograph with that layout can be called a panda, so this guide compares two specific Seiko watches rather than every panda-style dial.

Entry budget: Seiko SSB425
The SSB425 is the choice when price matters most. At $265 on Seiko USA, it is the only one of the two with a verified US list price in this guide, and it delivers the classic panda look: a silver dial, black subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock, a black tachymeter ring, and a 24-hour subdial.

#1 Best Overall
- Item shape: Round
- Power source type: Solar Powered
- Clasp type: Push Button Deployment Clasp
Its quartz movement trades the convenience of never needing light for a battery that Seiko rates at roughly three years. The larger 41.5 mm case with a 46.5 mm lug-to-lug span gives the dial presence, but it also means the watch will sit larger on smaller wrists. Replacing the battery is the main ongoing cost; this guide did not establish what a battery change costs.
Higher budget: Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC813
The SSC813 belongs to Seiko’s Prospex line and uses the V192 solar caliber. Light charges the movement, which means you do not need to plan battery changes, but you do need to keep the watch in light. Seiko rates it at about six months of running on a full charge, so the power-reserve indicator matters more here than on the quartz SSB425. Leave the watch in a drawer for long periods and it will stop.

- SEIKO Prospex
- Item shape: Round
- Power source type: Solar Powered
- Seiko Prospex
The case is smaller in diameter at 39.0 mm, yet thicker at 13.3 mm, so it may feel more substantial on the wrist than its width suggests. The curved sapphire crystal is harder-wearing than Hardlex and has an anti-reflective coating on the inside surface. The 20 mm lug width also limits your strap choices compared with the SSB425’s 22 mm.
Price points and what they mean
- $265 (SSB425, Seiko USA): the current US list price this guide could verify for either watch.
- USD 680 (SSC813, Seiko Middle East): a regional official price. It is not a US price, and it should not be used as one.
- $725 (SSC813, launch): Seiko’s US launch announcement from September 29, 2021. It is a historical figure and not a current price.
Prices change, and the two watches may be sold at different prices by different retailers. Check the current price on Seiko USA or an authorized dealer on the day you buy.

Which one to choose
- Choose the SSB425 if your priority is the lowest verified price, a long-running battery, and a larger dial with a 22 mm strap width.
- Choose the SSC813 if you want solar charging, a sapphire crystal, and a slightly smaller diameter, and you can pay the US price after confirming it.
- Choose neither if you need a specific water activity rating. Both are listed at 10 bar, which is not a substitute for a dive-specific rating, so confirm your intended use before buying.
Before you buy
- Check the current US price on Seiko USA or an authorized dealer. Use the regional price only as a reference.
- Try the watch on if you can. Wrist fit depends on lug-to-lug length and thickness as well as diameter.
- Confirm the lug width before choosing a strap. The SSB425 takes 22 mm, and the SSC813 takes 20 mm.
- If you choose the SSC813, plan to keep it near a light source so the solar cell can charge.
