On a panda chronograph, the hour and minute hands show regular time, and any small running-seconds register does too. The stopwatch uses a separate chronograph hand and elapsed-time counters, and it is started, stopped and reset with pushers whose positions depend on the model. In TUDOR’s official chronograph tutorial, the 2 o’clock pusher starts and stops timing and the 4 o’clock pusher resets it. That sequence is one manufacturer’s example, not a rule for every panda watch.
What “panda” tells you about a dial, and what it does not
“Panda” is an informal nickname for a dial with a light main dial and dark contrasting subdials. A “reverse panda” flips those colors, with a dark main dial and light subdials. The term is defined in that informal way in Chrono24 Magazine’s 2022 explainer on the layout.
The nickname describes contrast only. It does not identify the movement, and it does not fix how many registers the watch has or what each one measures. Many panda chronographs place three subdials at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, but that arrangement is a common choice, not a requirement. Two watches that look alike at a glance can assign their hands and counters differently, so the printed markings and the model’s manual are the only reliable guide to what each element does.
High contrast also makes a dial look easier to read than it may be in practice. Check the watch in both bright and dim light before deciding that every hand and small marking is clear.

Separate the regular display from the stopwatch
A chronograph is a stopwatch function that runs separately from the watch’s main timekeeping display. TUDOR’s tutorial puts it this way: “YOUR TUDOR CHRONOGRAPH CAN TIME EVENTS INDEPENDENTLY FROM ITS MAIN TIME KEEPING FUNCTION.” The quotation is from TUDOR’s official manufacturer tutorial, which names no individual speaker.
This separation explains the most common confusion. The long central hand on many panda chronographs is the chronograph seconds hand, and it can sit still while the watch keeps accurate time. A stationary central hand therefore means the stopwatch is not running. It does not mean the watch has stopped.
Map the hands and counters before you press anything
Work through the dial in this order, and confirm each role against the markings on the watch and its manual:

- Hour and minute hands: regular time of day.
- Running-seconds register, if present: a small subdial that shows ordinary seconds. It belongs to the main display, not the stopwatch.
- Long central hand: often the chronograph seconds hand. Confirm this on your model, because register assignments vary.
- Elapsed-minute and elapsed-hour counters: these record how many minutes or hours the stopwatch has run.
As a worked example, TAG Heuer’s 2024 brochure for the Carrera Chronograph CBS2216.BA0041 describes a chronograph function, a silver sunray dial, a black flange with a tachymeter and three counters. That is a documented example of a branded panda-design watch. It does not show that other panda chronographs share the same specifications or counter layout.
Start, stop and reset the stopwatch
The following sequence follows TUDOR’s official tutorial for its chronograph. Use it only as a template and check your own watch first.
- Locate the pusher at 2 o’clock. In TUDOR’s example it is unscrewed before it is pressed. Check whether your pusher is screw-down.
- Press the 2 o’clock pusher once to start. The central chronograph seconds hand begins to move.
- Press the same pusher again to stop. In TUDOR’s example, the central seconds hand and the minute counter both stop. TUDOR says this example indicates elapsed time to a quarter second.
- Unscrew the pusher at 4 o’clock, if it is screw-down, and press it to return the chronograph hands to zero.
- Confirm that the hour and minute hands kept running throughout. If they stopped, the watch needs attention, not a different reading of the stopwatch.
Patek Philippe’s official instruction text also describes a 2 o’clock start and stop and a 4 o’clock reset for the chronograph it covers. That matching layout does not mean every watch uses it. Only the summary text was available for this description, so consult the complete manual for the pusher details of your own model.

If the counters do not return to zero
- Press the reset pusher firmly and completely, because a partial press may not return the hands.
- Confirm which pusher resets the watch in the manual. Do not assume the 4 o’clock position on a different model.
- If the hands still do not return to zero, stop operating the pushers and have the watch checked by an authorized service center. Repeated pressing can make the problem harder to diagnose.
Use the tachymeter for average speed, if your watch has one
A tachymeter is an optional scale printed on the bezel or flange. It converts elapsed time over a known distance into an average speed. Patek Philippe’s instructions illustrate this with a highway example: start the chronograph at one kilometer marker, stop it at the next, and read the average speed on the scale. The tachymeter is not needed for the chronograph to work. A panda dial does not mean the watch has one, and the TAG Heuer flange scale is a feature of that particular model.

- Contrast and hand visibility in bright and dim light.
- Case size and thickness, given in the model’s specifications.
- Movement type, as stated by the manufacturer.
- Stated water-resistance rating, which applies only to the named reference.
- Pusher layout and whether the controls suit how you plan to use the watch.
Do not compare two watches only because both are described as panda. The label tells you about contrast, and the specifications and manual tell you how the watch works.
Velanti Milano Journal’s 2026 guidance makes the same point about model-specific operation, so confirm the controls on the exact reference you own or plan to buy.

The same caution applies to any tutorial. Read the pusher sequence from the manual for your reference before using the stopwatch, even when a manufacturer’s example appears similar.
One practical habit helps with every panda chronograph. Before you rely on the stopwatch, run it once, stop it, and reset it while you watch the dial. That short test shows you which hand moves, which counter advances and which pusher does what on your particular watch.
