Fall detection is useful only if a watch can detect an event, reach help, and stay on the wearer’s wrist when it matters. For most iPhone owners, the Apple Watch Series 10 offers the most complete automatic emergency workflow; the Google Pixel Watch 3 is the strongest general Android option, and the Samsung Galaxy Watch7 suits Galaxy-phone owners. Garmin’s vívoactive 5 lasts much longer between charges, but its Incident Detection works only during certain outdoor activities—not as general, around-the-clock fall monitoring.
The right choice depends on phone compatibility, connectivity, emergency-contact setup, and charging habits as well as the sensor. No smartwatch guarantees that it will detect every fall or successfully contact help.

1. Apple Watch Series 10: best overall for iPhone
Apple Watch Fall Detection can escalate from an on-watch warning to an emergency call. After detecting a hard fall, the watch taps the wrist, sounds an alarm, and displays an alert. If the wearer remains immobile for approximately one minute, it can automatically call emergency services. After the call, it can message the emergency contacts stored in Medical ID with the wearer’s location. Apple notes that not every fall is detected and that emergency contacts may not be notified if Messages is unavailable or not the selected texting app. Apple Support: Fall Detection
Fall Detection is available on Apple Watch SE or later, Series 4 or later, and Ultra models. The Series 10 is a strong all-round iPhone recommendation; the Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) is a lower-cost option with the core feature, but shorter battery life and fewer health features.

- FALL DETECTION WITH COUNTDOWN & CAREGIVER ALERT:When fall detection is enabled on both the watch and companion app, a detected fall starts a countdown so the wearer can cancel a false alert. If not canceled, the configured caregiver alert process begins through the paired smartphone. Bluetooth, app permissions and phone connection are required; test the alert after setup and before daily use.
- SOS ACCESS & BLUETOOTH CALLING:Open the SOS function from the watch to reach a preset emergency contact, and answer or make Bluetooth calls while connected to a compatible smartphone. This is a phone-connected safety watch, not a standalone cellular, GPS or 911 dispatch device.
- CAREGIVER-ASSISTED SETUP FOR RELIABLE USE:A family member should help install the app, pair the watch, add emergency contacts, enable fall detection on the watch and phone, approve background permissions, and complete a test alert. Once configured, the senior can focus on wearing the watch and using its essential safety functions.
- 1.9-INCH DISPLAY WITH MULTIPLE BAND OPTIONS:The 1.9-inch screen provides a larger view of time, calls, reminders and daily activity. Choose silicone for softer everyday wear, leather for a classic look, or steel for a dressier finish. Review the watch dimensions and band style before ordering, especially for smaller wrists.
- DAILY WELLNESS TRENDS & REMOTE FAMILY VIEW:Review steps, heart rate and sleep information through the companion app, along with alarms and sedentary reminders for everyday routines. Wellness readings are intended for general reference only and should not replace professional medical equipment or emergency services.
How to enable Fall Detection
- On the watch, open Settings, then SOS, then Fall Detection. Choose Always on or Only on during workouts.
- On the iPhone, open the Watch app, choose My Watch, then Emergency SOS, and turn on Fall Detection.
- In the iPhone Health app, complete Medical ID, add emergency contacts, and enable Share During Emergency Call. Apple Watch User Guide
- On the watch, check Settings, Passcode, then Wrist Detection. Wrist Detection must be enabled for automatic emergency calling after an impact fall.
Automatic calling requires a cellular connection, Wi-Fi calling with an internet connection, or a nearby iPhone. A cellular Apple Watch can be useful if the wearer may leave the phone behind, but it still needs an applicable connection.
High-impact activity can trigger a false alert, while a slow collapse or unusual landing may not register as a hard fall. If an accidental emergency call connects, Apple advises staying on the line and explaining what happened rather than hanging up immediately. Apple Support
2. Google Pixel Watch 3: best general Android choice
After detecting a hard fall, Pixel Watch 3 waits about 30 seconds, then vibrates, rings loudly, and asks whether the wearer wants to call emergency services. If there is no response, it continues alerting and calls after another 60 seconds. An automated voice message can share the wearer’s location with the operator. Google Pixel Watch Help
How to enable Fall Detection
- On the watch, press the crown, open Safety, choose Fall detection, and turn it on.
- Alternatively, in the Google Pixel Watch app, open Settings, then Safety & emergency, then Fall detection, and turn it on.
- To check the automated message, open the Pixel Watch app, choose Safety & emergency, Fall detection, then What the emergency operator hears. Google Pixel Watch Help
- Grant location permission if the wearer’s location is to be shared externally. If location sharing is missing, update the Personal Safety app on the watch through Play Store, then Manage apps.
A Wi-Fi Pixel Watch needs the paired phone nearby and connected through Bluetooth to call emergency services. An LTE model can operate without the phone nearby but needs an active LTE connection. Fall Detection is intended for adults, is not available in every country or region, and can be temporarily disabled when traveling in an unsupported region. High-impact activity can trigger false alerts.
Google rates Pixel Watch 3 for up to 24 hours with the always-on display and up to 36 hours in Battery Saver mode. Charging matters: a watch left on a charger cannot detect a fall. Google Store: Pixel Watch 3
3. Samsung Galaxy Watch7: best for Samsung Galaxy phones
Samsung calls its feature Hard fall detection. It can be set to detect falls Always, During physical activity, or Only during workouts. Depending on configuration and local support, the watch can alert emergency contacts and offer an emergency-call option. Samsung Support: Fall detection on Galaxy watches
Hard fall detection is not enabled by default. Add emergency contacts and configure the response before relying on the feature.
How to configure it
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app.
- Go to Watch settings, then Safety and emergency. On some devices the menu may say Band settings.
- Turn on Hard fall detection.
- Open its settings and choose when falls should be detected.
- Add emergency contacts and configure Share info with emergency contacts.
- Configure the emergency-call option, warning sound, and emergency number where those controls are available. Samsung Support: Hard fall detection settings
Emergency contacts must be added for the feature to work. Calling and messaging generally require the connected phone unless the watch is an LTE model with active network service. Available settings can vary by watch model, phone, country, and software version. Sports and other high-impact activity can be misclassified as a fall. Samsung Support

4. Garmin vívoactive 5: best battery life, but not a general fall detector
Garmin rates the vívoactive 5 for up to 11 days in smartwatch mode. Its safety feature is called Incident Detection, not general-purpose 24/7 Fall Detection. Garmin says it is available only for certain outdoor activities. When an incident is detected and the phone is connected, Garmin Connect can send an automated text message and email containing the wearer’s name and GPS location, if available. Garmin vívoactive 5 manual · Garmin Support: vívoactive 5 battery life
The paired phone must have a data plan and network coverage, and contacts must be able to receive the selected texts or email. Garmin describes Incident Detection as supplemental, not a primary way to obtain emergency assistance. Garmin Support: Incident Detection requirements
The vívoactive 5 can suit a cyclist, runner, or hiker seeking long battery life and an activity-safety feature. It is a poor match for someone needing automatic monitoring at home, while getting out of bed, or bathing.
Rank #2
- Fall Detection Watch - Built-in sensors can detect sudden falls and send app alerts to preset contacts, helping family respond faster when an older adult may not press SOS manually.
- Real-Time GPS & Geo-Fence - View location in the app, check route history and set safe zones for home, care centers or daily walks. Helpful for seniors with dementia or Alzheimer's.
- SOS & Two-Way Calling - Press and hold SOS to contact preset numbers. Voice calls need a SIM card with voice service; the included data-only SIM is for app/location data.
- Health & Daily Activity - Track steps, heart rate, blood oxygen and blood pressure reference data in the app, with reminders for daily routines and caregiver check-ins.
- One-Year Data Included - The pre-installed data SIM includes 1 year of data service for location features. After that, SIM data renewal is about $30/year; app use has no fee.
Before relying on Garmin Incident Detection
- Add emergency contacts in the Garmin Connect app.
- Sync the contacts to the watch.
- Confirm the phone has mobile data and network coverage during the activities where the feature will be used.
- Check that the activity profile supports Incident Detection. An unsupported profile can display Incident Detection Unsupported.
Fall detection is not the same as Emergency SOS
These terms are often mixed together in product listings:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

|---|---|
| Fall Detection | Uses sensors to identify a possible hard fall and start an automatic or semi-automatic response. |
| Incident Detection | Usually detects a serious event during selected activities and sends information through a connected phone. |
| Emergency SOS | Lets the wearer manually initiate an emergency call or alert. |
| Crash Detection | Looks for signs of a severe vehicle crash; it is not a replacement for fall detection. |
A watch that sends a text to a family member is not necessarily capable of calling emergency services. Cellular hardware alone does not guarantee emergency calling: the plan, regional support, network coverage, battery level, permissions, and phone connection all matter. Apple, Google, Samsung, and Garmin document missed events, false alerts, or connectivity limitations. Apple Support · Google Pixel Watch Help · Samsung Support · Garmin Support
How to choose the right watch
- Start with the phone. Apple Watch requires an iPhone; Pixel Watch requires Android; Galaxy Watch7 works most naturally with Samsung Galaxy phones, and compatibility and support can vary.
- Consider LTE if the wearer may be away from the phone. Wi-Fi/Bluetooth models generally depend on a nearby paired phone for emergency calls. LTE requires active compatible service.
- Prefer true fall detection for around-the-home protection. Apple, Google, and Samsung are better fits for this use; Garmin vívoactive 5 is activity-dependent.
- Complete setup with the wearer present. Enable the feature, add emergency contacts, grant location permissions, and check the emergency number and automated message where available.
- Plan charging around the safety requirement. Google rates Pixel Watch 3 for up to 24 hours with always-on display and up to 36 hours in Battery Saver; Garmin rates vívoactive 5 for up to 11 days in smartwatch mode. Ratings are manufacturer figures, real use varies, and safety coverage stops when the watch is off the wrist or out of power. Google Store · Garmin Support
- Do not treat a watch as a guaranteed medical alert system. Coverage, battery, software, regional restrictions, permissions, and the circumstances of a fall can prevent an alert or call.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the Apple Watch Series 10 if the wearer uses an iPhone and automatic emergency calling is the priority. Choose the Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) for a lower-cost iPhone option with Fall Detection.
Choose the Pixel Watch 3 for a general Android setup, especially LTE if the wearer may be separated from the phone. Pick the Galaxy Watch7 when the household already uses Samsung Galaxy phones and is prepared to complete setup carefully.
Choose the Garmin vívoactive 5 when long battery life and supported outdoor activities matter more than general fall monitoring. It is not the default recommendation for someone who needs protection from falls throughout the day.

FAQ
Which smartwatch has the best fall detection in 2025?
The Apple Watch Series 10 is the best overall choice for iPhone users because it can escalate a detected hard fall to an emergency call and notify Medical ID contacts with location. The Google Pixel Watch 3 is the strongest general Android alternative.
Do smartwatches call emergency services automatically after a fall?
Some can, under specific conditions. Apple Watch can call after about one minute of immobility; Pixel Watch 3 alerts after about 30 seconds, then calls after another 60 seconds without a response. They need power and an appropriate connection. Samsung’s response depends on configuration and connectivity; Garmin vívoactive 5 sends activity alerts to contacts through a paired phone.
Can fall detection miss a fall?
Yes. No manufacturer guarantees detection of every fall. A slow collapse, unusual landing, low battery, disabled permissions, lack of coverage, or unsupported region can prevent an alert or call. High-impact exercise can also trigger false alerts.
Is the Garmin vívoactive 5 suitable for someone who needs fall monitoring at home?
Usually not. Its Incident Detection is limited to certain outdoor activities and relies on a connected phone with data coverage. Apple Watch, Pixel Watch, or Galaxy Watch are better fits for general around-the-home fall detection.

The Bottom Line
Best overall: Apple Watch Series 10 for iPhone users. Best Android option: Google Pixel Watch 3. Best for Samsung owners: Galaxy Watch7. Best battery life: Garmin vívoactive 5, if its activity-only Incident Detection fits the need.
Whichever model you choose, enable the feature, verify emergency contacts, confirm the phone or LTE connection, and keep the watch charged. Treat fall detection as an extra layer of protection, not a guarantee that help will arrive.
