Most Fitbit faults have a simple cause: a stale Bluetooth connection, restricted background activity, dirty charging contacts, a loose fit, or a setting that changed on the phone. Work through the relevant section below before considering a factory reset.
Terminology note: the Fitbit app is now called Google Health. Its main tabs are Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health. Fitbit access now uses a Google Account.
Fitbit will not sync
Keep the Fitbit close to the phone, turn on Bluetooth and mobile or Wi-Fi internet, then open Google Health. On the Today tab, touch and hold the screen and pull down to refresh. You can also use Google Health → Connections → Sync.
To see whether the attempt worked, go to Google Health → Connections → [your device]. The last sync time appears below the device image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors#1 Best Overall
- Better measure calorie burn, understand resting heart rate & more with 24/7 heart rate tracking and a battery life of up to 7 days (varies with use and other factors)
If a manual sync fails
- Restart both the Fitbit and the phone.
- Turn the phone’s Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Check for updates to the phone, Google Health, and the Fitbit’s firmware.
- Make sure another nearby phone or tablet is not signed in to the same account and trying to use the Fitbit.
- On Android, check the permissions and battery settings below.
Android settings that commonly block syncing
Menu names vary between Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, and other Android phones, but the current Google paths are:
- Settings → Apps → Health → Permissions → Nearby devices → Allow
- Settings → Apps → Health → Mobile data & Wi-Fi or Mobile data usage → Background data → On
- Enable Unrestricted mobile data usage, if listed.
- Settings → Apps → Health → App battery usage → Allow background usage → Unrestricted
Battery Saver, background-data limits, and aggressive app-killing can cause delayed syncing, missing notifications, interrupted connected GPS, and failed firmware updates.
On Android 12 and later, the Nearby devices permission is generally enough for syncing; GPS location does not have to be permanently enabled just to sync. Location is still needed for weather and GPS maps. On Android 11 and earlier, Bluetooth scanning is tied more closely to Location Services.
Re-pairing the Fitbit
Only re-pair after the simpler fixes fail. First remove the old Bluetooth connection from the phone:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On iPhone, choose Forget This Device.
- On Android, choose Unpair or Forget.
Then reopen Google Health and set the device up again. Leaving the old Bluetooth entry in place can prevent a clean pairing.
Fitbit shows the wrong time
A Fitbit normally corrects its time during syncing. Restore Bluetooth and Google Health permissions, open the app, and pull down on the Today tab to force a refresh.
If the time is wrong by an hour or more, follow Fitbit’s time-zone troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the device is merely a few minutes behind. Also check that the phone has the correct date, time, and time zone, then sync again.
Fitbit will not charge
Use a standard wall outlet rather than a computer USB port and leave the device connected for at least 60 minutes. A completely flat battery may leave the screen black for several minutes before showing a charging indication.
- Remove the Fitbit from the charger.
- Clean the gold contacts on the Fitbit and the charging cable.
- Clean the charger pins with a cotton swab and a small amount of rubbing alcohol.
- Check that each charger pin springs back when gently pressed. A stuck pin usually means the cable needs replacing.
- Make sure both the Fitbit and the charger are fully dry before reconnecting them.
Restarting a tracker that appears dead
For a Charge 5, Charge 6, Luxe, or Luxe Special Edition, attach the tracker to its charging cable. Press the button on the flat end of the cable three times, pausing one second between presses. Wait roughly 10 seconds for the Fitbit logo.
For Sense and Versa-series watches, keep the watch on its charger and hold the physical side button for 10 seconds. Release it when the Fitbit logo appears. A normal restart does not delete activity data.
What the red X means
A large red X generally indicates a synchronisation or software error. The current recovery sequence is:
- Google Health → Profile picture or initial → Remove this device
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and choose Forget or Unpair.
- Return to Google Health and choose Set Up a Device.
Battery drains unusually fast
Battery life depends heavily on the model and settings. The biggest drains are usually:
| Feature | Why it reduces battery life |
|---|---|
| Always-on display | The screen remains active or is checked frequently. |
| Built-in or connected GPS | Satellite and location tracking use considerably more power. |
| SpO2 tracking | Additional sensor measurements run during sleep or at intervals. |
| On-wrist calls and music controls | Bluetooth activity and screen use increase. |
| Contactless payments | Using this feature can increase charging frequency. |
| Frequent notifications | The display and vibration motor activate more often. |
| Animated clock faces | Continuous graphics require more processing. |
If the battery is dying in less than a day, turn off Always On in the device settings first. Then reduce notifications, screen brightness, screen activation, and GPS use. A sudden change in battery life after an update may also be caused by a stuck app, an animated clock face, or a feature repeatedly trying to connect.
Stop wearing and charging the Fitbit if it becomes unusually hot, smells burnt, smokes, sparks, or looks swollen or damaged. A bulging or leaking battery is a safety issue, not a troubleshooting problem.

The screen is black, frozen, flickering, or stuck rebooting
- Charge the Fitbit for at least one hour.
- Clean and dry the screen and charging contacts.
- Perform the model-specific restart.
- Sync the device and install any available firmware update.
Firmware updates can take an hour or more. Keep Google Health running in the phone’s background while the update completes. Updating around midnight, when the daily step count resets, can produce an inaccurate step total for one day.
A factory reset should be the last resort. It erases activity still stored on the device but not yet synced, as well as alarms, goals, and notifications. Do not push paper clips or other objects into sensor holes: some are microphones or altimeter openings.
Phone notifications are missing or delayed
Set them up from Google Health → Connections → [your device] → Notifications. Follow the pairing prompts, then select notification categories and apps. The current setup supports one primary app for categories such as Dialer, Messages, Calendar, and Gmail, with additional choices under App Notifications.
Then check the phone itself:
- Bluetooth is on and the phone is receiving the notification.
- Notifications are allowed when the phone is locked.
- Do Not Disturb, Focus, quiet hours, driving mode, and similar modes are off.
- Google Health is allowed to run in the background.
- The phone is within roughly 30 feet of the Fitbit.
- The text conversation is not already open on the phone. Fitbit generally forwards new, unread texts.
iPhone-only check
Open Settings → Bluetooth → [the Fitbit’s information button] and enable Share System Notifications. If that option is absent, restart the Fitbit and accept the prompt asking whether it may show notifications. Also check Settings → Notifications → Show Previews and set it to Always or When Unlocked.
GPS will not connect or the route is inaccurate
For built-in GPS, go outdoors before starting the exercise. When the Fitbit says GPS is connected, wait up to 30 seconds before beginning. Sync at least once every 24 hours to reduce satellite-acquisition time, and keep the device at 80% charge or higher when possible.
GPS works best with a clear view of the sky. Tall buildings and dense tree cover can delay or distort the route. Confirm that GPS is enabled for the selected exercise. If it still will not connect, restart Google Health, toggle Bluetooth off and on, and restart the phone.

- iPhone: set location access to Always and enable Background App Refresh.
GPS is intended for activities involving distance, such as running, walking, hiking, and cycling. It is not required for every exercise type.
Steps, distance, or floors look wrong
Fitbit uses a three-axis accelerometer, so arm movement affects the result. A wrist-worn device may count differently from a tracker clipped to clothing. A loose band or unusual wearing position can also reduce consistency. For exercise and sleep, wear it securely but not painfully tight.
Extra steps or floors often appear after driving. Daily activity data cannot simply be deleted, but you can log a non-step activity such as Driving over the incorrect period to override the erroneous activity.

Heart-rate readings are missing or inaccurate
The sensor needs steady skin contact. Wear the Fitbit snugly enough that it does not slide during exercise, but not so tightly that it becomes uncomfortable. For sleep and overnight readings, position it around two to three finger widths above the wrist bone.
Missing heart-rate or sleep-stage data can result from a loose fit, critically low battery, or a sleeping position that breaks contact with the skin. Clean and dry the sensor and try wearing the device in the recommended position for a full night.
High- and low-heart-rate alerts are not continuous emergency monitoring. On supported models, an alert is generated when an unusually high or low rate is detected while you appear inactive for at least 10 minutes.

Sleep data is missing or incorrect
After waking, open Google Health and go to the Sleep tab. Touch and hold the screen, then pull down to refresh. If the session does not appear, force-quit Google Health, restart Bluetooth, and manually sync again.
Sleep stages require at least 20 minutes of sleep data. A short nap may be recorded without stages or a sleep score. A loose band, low battery, or inconsistent heart-rate contact can also prevent a complete result.
Clock face shows zeroes or missing statistics
Third-party clock faces can lose permissions or contain bugs. Check Google Health → Connections → [your device] → Watch faces → Clocks → [installed clock face] → Settings, then enable the permissions required for the statistics.
If the problem continues, install a clock face from the By Google Health category. If its statistics work normally, the original third-party face is the likely cause.
On Android, the Watch faces error “Oops, looks like there’s no Internet connection” can be caused by Private DNS. Go to Settings → Network & Internet → Private DNS → Off, then force-stop and reopen Google Health.
Fitbit will not set up on a new phone
Do not begin by pairing the device from the phone’s Bluetooth screen. Start inside Google Health and follow its setup process.
- Uninstall Google Health from the old phone.
- Install Google Health on the new phone.
- Sign in with the same Google Account.
- Approve the requested Bluetooth, Nearby devices, notification, and location permissions.
Your account data is stored in the cloud, so changing phones does not by itself erase it. Current minimum requirements are Android 11 or later, or iOS 16.4 or later. If an older Android phone can still run the app, deleting it may leave you unable to reinstall it.
Fitbit got wet or causes a rash
Many current Fitbit devices are water-resistant to 50 metres, but that does not mean permanently waterproof or safe for every water exposure. Resistance can decline after drops and after contact with soap, shampoo, conditioner, perfume, sunscreen, lotion, insect repellent, or high-velocity water. Leather, metal, and woven accessory bands may not be water-safe.
Google advises against wearing a Fitbit in the shower, hot tub, or sauna. If it contacts anything other than fresh water, rinse it with fresh water and a soap-free cleanser, then dry it with a lint-free cloth.
If the skin becomes irritated, stop wearing the device, loosen or remove the band, and let the skin recover. Persistent symptoms deserve medical advice.

FAQ
Why will my Fitbit not sync with my phone?
Open Google Health and pull down on the Today tab, then check Bluetooth, internet access, Nearby devices permission, background data, and unrestricted battery use. If re-pairing is necessary, first forget or unpair the Fitbit in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then set it up again from Google Health.
How do I restart a Fitbit that has a black or frozen screen?
Charge it for at least one hour first. Charge 5, Charge 6, Luxe, and Luxe Special Edition trackers restart by pressing the charging-cable button three times with one-second pauses. Sense and Versa watches restart by holding the side button for 10 seconds while connected to the charger.

Why is my Fitbit battery suddenly draining so quickly?
Always-on display, GPS, SpO2 tracking, frequent notifications, calls, music controls, contactless payments, animated clock faces, and high brightness are common causes. Turn off Always On first and reduce the other power-intensive features. Stop using the device if the battery is hot, swollen, leaking, or damaged.
Can I factory-reset my Fitbit to fix a problem?
Yes, but use it only as a last resort. A factory reset can erase activity stored on the device that has not synced, along with alarms, goals, and notifications. Try charging, cleaning, restarting, syncing, updating, and re-pairing first.
The Bottom Line
Start with the least destructive fixes: charge the Fitbit, clean and dry the contacts, restart both devices, refresh Google Health, and check Bluetooth and background permissions. Re-pair only after removing the old Bluetooth connection, and reserve a factory reset for a device that remains unusable after those steps.
