For any connected watch, compare the required service plan, coverage, school controls, and emergency behavior—not just the device price.
How to choose a smartwatch for a child
Start with the family’s practical needs rather than a feature checklist. A GPS watch may help a parent check a location or receive an alert, but location updates depend on the device’s service and connectivity. It is not guaranteed real-time safety or a replacement for emergency services.
- Decide how the child should communicate. Some watches send messages through an app or to other watches; others support calls and texts.
- Check who can contact the child. Look for parent-approved contacts and understand whether controls block unknown callers or messages.
- Confirm the school routine. School or focus modes differ in what they mute or lock, and whether selected contacts or SOS remain available.
- Check service compatibility. Cellular features can require a paid plan, LTE coverage, a compatible carrier account, and a supported country or region. Verify these for the exact model before buying.
- Consider the child’s habits. Frequent GPS use and connected features can reduce battery life; water resistance does not necessarily mean a watch can be submerged.
Best kids watches at a glance
| Watch | Communication | Location and controls | Service and emergency notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garmin Bounce | Text and voice messages through the Garmin Jr. app and approved Bounce watches; preset replies, emojis, and family group messages | Built-in GPS, location areas with boundary notifications, child check-ins, school mode, and do-not-disturb | Connected messaging, Assistance, and LiveTrack require an active subscription and LTE connectivity. Assistance alerts approved contacts and provides a LiveTrack view; it is not described as a direct emergency-services call. |
| Gabb Watch 3e | Calls, texts, and voice messages; parent-approved contacts | GPS tracking and Safe Zones; Focus Mode mutes the watch and locks apps, calls, and messages, while retaining access for primary contacts, guardians, and SOS | A phone plan is required for activation. Its emergency button calls the child’s primary contact, not a documented direct 911 service. Gabb advises against submerging it. |
| Verizon Gizmo Watch | Two-way messaging and voice/video calling | Location tracking and alerts; scheduled School Mode can lock and unlock the watch at parent-selected times | Verizon says Gizmo Watches cannot call 911 or similar emergency telephone systems. Verizon lists service at $10 per month, plus taxes and fees, and a possible one-time activation fee. |
Features and availability can vary by model generation, region, carrier, and service terms. The figures and product details below are manufacturer or reviewer statements, not independent safety findings.
Garmin Bounce: best for GPS and app-mediated messaging
Bounce is a fit for families who want location features and controlled messaging without treating the watch as a general-purpose phone. Garmin says it has built-in GPS and LTE, lets parents define areas and receive boundary notifications, and allows children to check in. Messages go to the Garmin Jr. app or approved Bounce watches rather than functioning as ordinary phone calls and texts.

Parents can enable school mode or do-not-disturb. Garmin’s Assistance feature sends a notification to approved contacts with a LiveTrack view. Bounce also includes sleep, steps, active minutes, listed activity tracking, reminders, a timer, a stopwatch, and games. Garmin’s announcement explains that connected capabilities require service: “An active subscription plan and LTE connectivity is required to use connected features, including text and voice messaging, Assistance, and LiveTrack.” See Garmin’s Bounce announcement.
Garmin announced a $149.99 purchase price and up to two days of battery life in November 2022. Those are announcement-era figures, not confirmation of today’s price or a current battery guarantee. Garmin says network conditions and use of connected features significantly affect battery life. Check current model availability, subscription terms, and supported coverage before choosing it.

Gabb Watch 3e: best for parent-managed calls and texts
Gabb describes Watch 3e as offering calls, texts, voice messages, GPS tracking, Safe Zones, and contacts approved by a parent. Its MyGabb app can turn on Focus Mode, which mutes the watch and locks apps, calls, and messages while keeping access available to primary contacts, guardians, and SOS. Gabb says the watch operating system blocks internet browsers, social media, contact from strangers, and dangerous apps; these are manufacturer descriptions of its controls.
The emergency button calls the child’s primary contact, according to Gabb—not emergency services. Activation requires a phone plan. Gabb’s FAQ gives an expected normal-use battery life of 14–18 hours and says frequent GPS or activity use can drain it faster. Gabb also states that the watch is water resistant, not waterproof, and advises against submerging it. See Gabb’s Watch 3e product information for current terms and compatibility.

Verizon Gizmo Watch: best for Verizon families who want calls and video
Verizon describes the Gizmo Watch as supporting location tracking and alerts, two-way messaging, voice and video calls, and SOS alerts. Setup uses the Verizon Family app, with a parent or legal guardian as primary admin. Scheduled School Mode locks and unlocks the watch at times selected by the parent. Verizon says GizmoHub is retiring and its features are moving to Verizon Family, so confirm the app migration and setup instructions for your account.
The emergency limitation is important: Verizon states, “Gizmo Watches can’t call 911 or similar emergency telephone number systems.” SOS alerts should not be mistaken for dialing emergency services. Verizon’s support FAQ lists Gizmo Watch service at $10 per month on a Verizon mobile account, with taxes and fees and a possible one-time activation fee; confirm the current charge and eligibility with Verizon. See Verizon Family FAQs.

Does a kids smartwatch need its own phone plan?
Not every watch handles connectivity the same way, but cellular features generally depend on the specific device’s service arrangement and network coverage. Garmin explicitly requires an active subscription and LTE connectivity for Bounce’s connected messaging, Assistance, and LiveTrack. Gabb says Watch 3e needs a phone plan for activation. Verizon describes a monthly Gizmo Watch service added to a Verizon mobile account.
Before buying, verify the exact watch generation, carrier/account eligibility, supported country, coverage where the child will use it, and what happens if service lapses. Compare the recurring cost and any fees alongside the upfront device price. The available figures do not establish a normalized current total cost across all three products or regions.

Can a kids smartwatch call 911?
Do not assume that an SOS button calls 911. The documented behavior differs: Gabb says Watch 3e’s emergency button calls the child’s primary contact; Garmin says Bounce Assistance notifies approved contacts with a LiveTrack view; Verizon explicitly says Gizmo Watches cannot call 911 or similar emergency telephone systems. These functions can help reach a caregiver, but they are not the same as direct emergency-service calling.
Check the manufacturer’s current emergency instructions for the exact model and region before relying on it. Make sure the child knows whom the watch can contact and what to do if there is an emergency and the watch cannot connect.
What SafeWise’s 2026 comparison can—and cannot—tell you
SafeWise’s 2026 comparison includes COSMO JrTrack 5, Gabb Watch 3e, Verizon Gizmo Watch 3 Adventure, Bark Watch, and Garmin Bounce. SafeWise says it tested several brands with parents and children; its observations and rankings belong to that reviewer’s test and publication context, not to every family or child. Its page also lists Gabb Watch 3e at $149.99 and suggests ages 5–14, but those are reviewer-page details that may change, not a universal price or age recommendation. See SafeWise’s 2026 kids smartwatch comparison for its methodology and current page details.
COSMO JrTrack 5 and the other named alternatives may suit families whose needs differ, but confirm current model specifications, service requirements, emergency behavior, and availability directly before comparing them with the three watches above.
