A lug and spring bar attach a strap or bracelet to the watch case; a buckle or clasp fastens the band around your wrist. Keeping those jobs separate makes watch descriptions easier to understand—and helps you choose compatible replacement parts.

Watch exterior parts: a quick orientation

This glossary focuses on visible external parts, especially the pieces that attach and fasten a watch band. Patek Philippe defines a watch’s exterior as parts such as the case, dial, hands, glass, crown and strap or bracelet; movement components are separate. This is a practical guide to those exterior terms, not a complete dictionary of watchmaking.

What is the difference between a buckle and a clasp?

Both are fastening hardware, but they describe different mechanisms. In these definitions, a buckle joins the two sections of a band, while a fold-over clasp opens by folding over without coming apart from the bracelet sections. Retail listings sometimes use “buckle” and “clasp” loosely, so look for the mechanism described or shown rather than relying on the label alone.

Buckle

A buckle is the piece that connects the two sections of a band. Some buckle designs also allow the band length to be adjusted. A pin buckle is a familiar example: a pin engages one of the holes in the other band section.

Fold-over clasp

A fold-over clasp opens by folding over while remaining attached to the two bracelet sections. That is the useful distinction when a listing specifies this clasp type: it folds open rather than detaching like two separate band ends.

How does a strap or bracelet attach to the watch?

The attachment hardware is at the case end of the band. Lugs extend from the case and provide the points where a spring bar holds a strap or bracelet. The spring bar sits between the lugs; it is not the same thing as the buckle or clasp at the wrist.

Lug

A lug is a projection from the watch case that helps hold the band. Patek Philippe also uses “horn” for this feature. The space between the lugs is where the band’s attachment hardware fits.

Lug hole

A lug hole is the opening into which the spring bar is inserted during installation. The spring bar’s ends engage the attachment points at the case.

Spring bar

A spring bar is a thin metal rod with spring-loaded ends. It fits between the lugs or other case attachments and holds the strap or bracelet in place. Patek Philippe notes that on its watches the spring-bar material may correspond to the case material; that is a brand-specific detail, not a general rule for every watch.

What are the parts of a metal watch bracelet?

A metal wrist attachment is commonly called a bracelet in the Japan Clock & Watch Association’s guide. The end piece, also called an end link, joins the bracelet to the case; the ordinary links are the individual pieces that make up the bracelet.

End piece or end link

The end piece is the part at the bracelet end that attaches to the case. “End link” is another name for it. It differs from the individual links farther along the bracelet, which connect to one another to form the band.

Bracelet links

Bracelet links are the component pieces that make up the metal bracelet. They are distinct from the end link, whose job is to meet the watch case.

Strap, band or bracelet: which word should you use?

“Strap” is a useful general word for the wrist attachment. “Band” is also widely used, and the Japan Clock & Watch Association calls a metal band a bracelet. Usage is not identical across every retailer and watchmaker, so check the product description for material and construction rather than assuming the name alone tells you everything.

The movement is the mechanism that powers the watch; “calibre” is another term for it. It is an internal mechanism, not an exterior fastening or case part.

What to check before buying a replacement strap or part

Definitions explain what a part does, but they do not establish that parts are interchangeable. The cited guides do not specify one universal spring-bar size or end-link fit. Before ordering a replacement, confirm the watch model, the relevant dimensions, and the attachment style. This matters particularly for end links, which may be specific to a watch model.

  • For a strap or bracelet: check its width at the attachment point and whether it is designed for your watch’s lug or attachment style.
  • For a spring bar: verify the dimensions and fit required by your watch rather than assuming any bar will work.
  • For an end link: confirm compatibility with the exact watch model; a similar-looking bracelet end does not establish a fit.
  • For fastening hardware: identify whether you need a buckle or a particular clasp mechanism, and check that it suits the band construction.

When terminology is unclear, compare the product’s measurements and mechanism with your watch’s specifications or ask the seller or manufacturer to confirm fit.
