The terms describe a dial layout—not a fixed set of functions. Their history complicates the shorthand: Universal Genève used “Tri-Compax” for a watch combining chronograph, calendar and moon-phase complications. To understand a particular watch, count and identify its indications rather than relying on the name alone.
What do bi-compax and tri-compax mean today?
In contemporary enthusiast usage, the prefixes generally indicate the number of chronograph sub-dials: bi for two and tri for three. This makes the terms useful for describing a dial at a glance, but they are not complete technical specifications. A register might show running seconds, elapsed chronograph minutes or hours, or another indication. The label alone does not tell you which.
For instance, a two-register chronograph can place its elapsed-time counter in one register and running seconds in the other. A three-register design may add a separate elapsed-time counter, but the exact arrangement depends on the watch. Read the dial markings and the maker’s description to establish what each register does.
Why the historical meaning is different
Universal Genève introduced its Compax chronograph in 1936. Fratello’s account of the naming history describes two sub-dials for elapsed minutes and hours, plus a third for running seconds. It also explains that “Compax” originally referred to complications, not simply to a count of registers. In modern usage, the same article uses bi-compax and tri-compax for two- and three-sub-dial layouts. Fratello’s terminology history

Universal Genève says its Tri-Compax launched in 1944 and describes it as “the first full-calendar chronograph to be industrialized.” That is the brand’s own historical characterization. Its current history page lists day, date, month and moon-phase indications, supported by an in-house caliber. The name therefore referred to a combination of complications, not simply to the modern idea of a three-register chronograph. Universal Genève’s Tri-Compax history
The old and current uses coexist. That is why a listing or reference may use “Tri-Compax” as a model name or complication label, while a modern description may use “tri-compax” to describe three sub-dials. Context matters.

What the name does—and does not—tell you
- Register count: In modern shorthand, bi-compax usually signals two chronograph sub-dials and tri-compax three.
- Register function: The label does not establish which registers show running seconds, elapsed minutes or hours, or other information.
- Other complications: Calendar displays and moon phases cannot be inferred from the number of registers.
- Movement and dimensions: The name does not specify the movement, case size or thickness.
Two watches with similar register counts can differ in all of these respects. Check the actual model documentation, movement specification and case measurements when comparing watches or assessing a listing.

Franck Muller chronographs
Franck Muller’s account of its chronographs describes two 1990s configurations: a 36 mm silver-dial, two-counter version and a 37 mm black-dial, three-counter version. The article says both used the Lemania 1874 movement. It also describes 39 mm cases for the 2022 tribute chronographs. These are details of the specific watches covered by the manufacturer, not general specifications for bi-compax or tri-compax designs. Franck Muller’s chronograph account

Carl F. Bucherer Heritage BiCompax Annual
The name of this watch includes “BiCompax,” but its owner’s manual lists more than two indications: a chronograph, small seconds, minutes counter, seconds counter, big date and month display. The manual identifies an annual calendar, a tachymeter scale and a CFB 1972 automatic movement with 42 hours of power reserve. That documented example makes the distinction clear: a bi-compax-style dial label does not mean the watch has only two displays or only two functions. Carl F. Universal Genève Tri-Compax
Universal Genève’s current history page gives dimensions of 36 mm in diameter and 12.5 mm thick for the model it describes, alongside its day, date, month and moon-phase indications. Those are details of the historical watch as presented by the brand, not specifications that follow from the word “tri-compax” on its own. Universal Genève’s model history

How to compare two watches accurately
- Count the registers. Note how many sub-dials there are and where they sit on the dial.
- Identify each indication. Use the dial labels and the maker’s documentation to distinguish running seconds, chronograph elapsed time and calendar displays.
- Check additional complications. Look specifically for date, full or annual calendar, and moon-phase functions rather than assuming they come with a particular register count.
- Verify the movement and dimensions. Compare the named movement and documented case measurements for the exact models, not just their bi-compax or tri-compax labels.
Register count by itself does not establish that one watch is more accurate, easier to read or mechanically simpler than another. Those claims need evidence about the specific watches, not an inference from their layouts.
