They let the wearer adjust certain calendar indications without putting conventional corrector openings on the case sides. Blancpain says the controls can be pressed by fingertip rather than with a separate pin or stylus; which indications they adjust depends on the watch’s complication and reference.
What are Blancpain under-lug correctors?
They are external controls positioned beneath the lugs that transmit a press to the watch’s movement. The arrangement keeps the case sides free of the small openings or levers often used for calendar correction. Blancpain describes the design as allowing hand or fingertip operation without a special correction tool. Those are the manufacturer’s stated benefits, not the result of an independent comparative usability test. Blancpain’s overview of its watchmaking know-how describes the feature.
“Under-lug” and “under-horn” refer to the same placement: the horns are the parts of the case that extend to meet the strap or bracelet. The corrector itself is accessible from beneath that overhang, rather than from a conventional opening in the case flank.
How does the mechanism work?
In Blancpain’s technical account, pressing the corrector knob turns a shaft; a small arm connected to that shaft then actuates the movement. This lever arrangement transfers pressure from the concealed control to the calendar mechanism, so the wearer can press it with a fingernail instead of inserting a separate tool. The control is hidden, but it is mechanically connected to movement components—not an independent mechanism outside the movement. When did Blancpain introduce them?
Blancpain says it unveiled its first correctors beneath the horns for a perpetual calendar in 2004. The date and “world’s first” description are the brand’s own historical claim. Blancpain’s account says the design grew from a watchmaker’s work on the 1735 watch, with the aim of removing correctors from the case sides without changing the movement. The brand’s complications page gives its 2004 account; the technical history is in Lettres du Brassus.

The feature is associated with particular calendar watches, not every Blancpain. The available controls and the indications they adjust vary by model. Examples documented by Blancpain include:

- Villeret Grande Date Jour Rétrograde: the 16 April 2018 announcement says the day indication is adjusted using a concealed fingertip corrector, while the date is set through the crown.
- Boutique perpetual-calendar model: Blancpain’s 11 April 2019 announcement describes under-lug levers for the calendar hands and moon phase.
These examples show why it is worth checking the exact reference and its instructions: a corrector’s location does not tell you by itself which display it changes.
How do you adjust a Blancpain calendar without a corrector tool?
If the specific model has under-lug controls, Blancpain’s design is intended to let the wearer press them by hand or fingertip. Do not assume that every calendar indication is adjusted this way: the Grande Date Jour Rétrograde example, for instance, uses a hidden corrector for the day and the crown for the date. Identify the reference and follow its instructions to match each control to its function before making an adjustment. The cited product and announcement pages establish examples of the feature, but do not establish a universal adjustment procedure or that every model can safely be corrected at any time.

What the feature does—and does not—establish
Under-lug placement is a design choice that conceals the controls and avoids conventional case-side corrector openings. Blancpain says this also enables tool-free fingertip operation. The available brand descriptions do not provide an independent, controlled comparison with other calendar watches, or evidence that the design is more durable or safer. When comparing specific watches, check the complication and indications, the number and placement of controls, whether a tool is required, any model-specific guidance on when adjustment is safe, and the case profile. Do not infer those practical details from the under-lug layout alone.
