Neither is automatically the better buy. A watch-only listing can be the smarter choice if the watch is authentic, in good condition, properly checked and discounted enough to make the missing items unimportant to you. Box and papers may be worth more when they credibly match the watch, document its history, support a remaining warranty or improve the resale appeal you value.
What “full set” and “watch-only” mean
Full set
“Full set” usually means the watch with its original box and paperwork, but the term is not a standardized inventory. Depending on the watch and seller, it may also include a warranty card, booklets, tags, spare links or other accessories. Ask for a specific list and check that any documents correspond to the watch. London Watch Vault’s buying guide and Naples Rolex’s explanation of full sets describe examples of these contents.

Watch-only
Watch-only means the watch is offered without some or all of its accompanying items. It does not, by itself, show that the watch is counterfeit, stolen or defective. Nor does a box or card prove that a watch is genuine. Assess the actual watch and the seller’s authentication process separately from the accessories.

What box and papers can—and cannot—tell you
Matching, credible documents can support a watch’s provenance and may help its appeal to a future buyer. A warranty card can also be relevant if a warranty is still in effect; the value of that paperwork is different for an older watch without remaining coverage. Purchase or service records may add useful history, but their presence does not replace examining the watch.

Ask who inspected the watch, what that inspection covered, what return rights and warranty the seller provides, and whether an independent qualified watchmaker can inspect it. Treat the box and papers as supporting information, not as authentication on their own.
Rolex Certified Pre-Owned is a specific case
Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned programme applies to eligible Rolex watches at least two years old, certified authentic and guaranteed by Rolex, and sold through participating Official Rolex Retailers. That is a brand-backed programme with its own certification process—not a claim that ordinary Rolex papers, another brand’s papers or any watch-only listing carries the same guarantee.

How much more should a full set cost?
There is no established universal premium for box and papers. Two commercial guides offer different estimates: London Watch Vault puts a full-set premium at 10–25%, while SecondHand’s July 10, 2026 guide estimates 5–15% for an otherwise identical watch-only example. These are publisher estimates, not independent transaction-based measurements or a promise that the premium will hold at resale. London Watch Vault; SecondHand.
Bob’s Watches likewise notes that there is no universal reduction for a Rolex missing papers; reference, age, remaining warranty, rarity, condition and provenance can all affect value. Its guidance is specific to Rolex rather than a pricing formula for every brand. Bob’s Watches.

Use any quoted percentage only as a rough prompt to investigate, not as a rule. Compare actual examples of the same reference and similar age, condition, originality and seller protections. Do not assume that a full-set premium will be recovered when you sell.
How to compare two listings
When possible, compare the same reference and weigh the following before deciding whether the accessories justify the price difference:

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length. There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product will have a battery which exceeds 80% capacity relative to new.
- Accessories will not be original, but will be compatible and fully functional. Product may come in generic Box.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Condition and originality: Check the case, dial, hands and bracelet, and ask about replaced or refinished parts. A 2026 marketplace guide argues that condition and originality may outweigh accessories. SecondHand.
- Authentication and seller protections: Find out who inspected the watch, what the inspection covers, what the return policy allows and whether a seller warranty applies. Do not infer protections from a marketplace or listing unless that specific offer states them.
- Documents and provenance: Check whether papers are original, complete and consistent with the specific watch. Ask whether purchase or service history is available.
- Age and remaining warranty: A matching warranty card may matter more when coverage remains than when a watch is old enough that it has expired.
- Total price difference: Compare the premium with what you personally value in the documents, accessories and likely resale appeal—not with an assumed fixed percentage.
- Your plans: If you expect to keep and wear the watch, a vetted watch-only example at a worthwhile discount may suit you. If you expect to resell or place a high value on completeness, a credible full set may be more appealing.
Which should you buy?
Choose watch-only when
- The watch passes appropriate authenticity and condition checks.
- The seller’s inspection, return terms and warranty are acceptable to you.
- The discount is meaningful enough that you would rather keep the savings than pay for the missing items.
Favor box and papers when
- The documents are credible and match the watch.
- The added cost is reasonable for that reference and its condition.
- You value the provenance, any relevant remaining warranty or the potential appeal of completeness to a future buyer.
The better buy is the specific watch whose condition, history, price and seller protections you can verify—not simply the listing with more accessories.
