The Breguet Marine GMT 5857 displays a reference time and a second, local time. Its central local-time hour hand can be moved forward or backward in one-hour steps while the reference-time hand and its 24-hour indicator stay put. That makes the 5857 a practical mechanical travel watch for someone who wants to track home time while adjusting to a new time zone.
How the Breguet Marine GMT 5857 displays two times
Breguet’s operating manual identifies four related indications: reference time, a 24-hour indicator linked to that reference time, a second time zone, and a date linked to the second time zone. The distinction matters: the central hour hand is the one adjusted to show local time, while the reference-time display remains unchanged.
- Reference time: the time you want to keep track of, often home time.
- 24-hour indicator: shows day or night for the reference time, helping distinguish, for example, 8 a.m. from 8 p.m.
- Second time zone: the central local-time hour indication, with minutes and seconds.
- Date: associated with the second time zone, so it follows the local-time setting.
This is more specific than a watch that merely adds a second time-zone hand: the local hour can be adjusted independently without resetting the reference-time indication.
How to set the Breguet Marine GMT 5857 when travelling
Use the manual for the exact 5857 reference and follow its crown-position instructions. Breguet’s procedure is to move the central local-time hour hand in one-hour jumps for the time zones crossed. The reference-time hand and its 24-hour indicator are not changed by this adjustment.

- Identify the crown position specified in the watch’s manual for setting the local hour.
- Advance or move back the central hour hand by one hour for each time-zone change, until it shows the destination’s local time. The direction depends on whether you are travelling east or west.
- Check the date, which is linked to the second time zone and may change as local time passes midnight.
- Return the crown to position 1 as instructed by the manual.
Because the reference time stays fixed, this adjustment preserves the time you are tracking at home. The 24-hour indicator provides the day/night context for that reference time; it is not the local-time date display.
How the 5857 GMT date works
The date is linked to the second time zone, not the reference-time indication. As you move the central local hour through midnight, the date can advance or retreat accordingly. When setting the watch after a long trip or a stopped period, check that the displayed date matches the local time you have set; the reference-time 24-hour indicator helps you keep the two displays distinct.

Specifications of reference 5857BR/Z2/5ZU
Angus Davies’s Fratello Watches review lists the following specifications for the rose-gold reference 5857BR/Z2/5ZU. These are reference-specific figures from a historical review, not specifications for every watch in Breguet’s current Marine collection.
| Specification | 5857BR/Z2/5ZU |
|---|---|
| Case | 42.00 mm; 18-carat rose gold |
| Water resistance | 10 bar (100 m), subject to the crown-position condition in Breguet’s manual |
| Crystal and case back | Sapphire crystal; solid case back |
| Movement | Self-winding calibre 517F |
| Frequency and jewels | 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz); 28 jewels |
| Power reserve | 72 hours, as listed in the review |
| Indications | Zone time: hours, minutes and seconds; home/reference time: hours, minutes and date; 24-hour dial |
| Strap and clasp | Rubber strap with 18-carat rose-gold deployant |
The Fratello review supplies the reference-specific dimensions and movement specifications. Breguet’s manual qualifies water resistance with the crown in position 1: Cette montre est garantie étanche à 10 bar (100 m), à condition que la couronne soit en position 1.
In English, the watch is guaranteed water-resistant to 10 bar (100 m), provided the crown is in position 1. That qualification should be observed rather than treating the rating as unconditional.

Rose gold versus steel
Historical coverage describes the Marine GMT 5857 in both steel and rose gold. Worldtempus establishes those material variants, while the cited Fratello specification block applies specifically to rose-gold reference 5857BR/Z2/5ZU. It does not establish that every specification or strap configuration is identical across references.
For a comparison, first confirm the exact reference and case material, then check its own documentation for dimensions, movement, strap, and water-resistance details. The functional question is the same across the GMT concept: whether you want a separate reference-time display while changing the local hour independently.

Is the Marine GMT 5857 still available?
The cited coverage is historical and does not establish current production status, present-day stock, or market pricing. Its absence from current collection listings alone is not proof that the model is discontinued. Anyone considering a purchase should verify the exact reference, condition, documentation, and seller directly.
Breguet’s current Marine 5517 page describes a different watch: a three-hand/date model with calibre 777A and a listed 55-hour power reserve. It is not the 5857 GMT and should not be treated as a specification update or direct equivalent.
