The Caliber 589F runs at 10 Hz, or 72,000 vibrations per hour, and the dial’s fine markings let the wearer read elapsed time to tenths of a second. The watch also combines a second time zone, date and 24-hour indicator.
This is a reference-focused guide to the launch specification and operating instructions, not a first-hand review. Breguet dates the Type XXII to 2010; the launch archive identifies it as ref. 3880ST/H2/3XV.
What does 10 Hz mean on the Type XXII?
Hertz describes frequency: 10 Hz means the watch’s regulating oscillator completes 10 cycles per second. For the Type XXII’s Caliber 589F, that corresponds to 72,000 vibrations per hour. Breguet’s launch-era description identifies a silicon balance spring, lever and escape wheel as components of this high-frequency design. The stated aim was improved rate precision and stability; the available specifications do not establish independent real-world accuracy results.
The faster rate supports the chronograph’s 30-second sweep. It does not, by itself, prove that every example keeps time better in daily wear than a lower-frequency watch.

Breguet’s high-frequency timeline describes the 30-second revolution as making the hand appear to move more gently around the dial. That is the manufacturer’s characterization.
How to read the 30-second chronograph hand
When the chronograph is running, its central seconds hand completes a circuit in 30 seconds. Read its position against the outer 30-second scale, then check the minute totalizer to determine which half-minute is being counted. The minute counter supplies the larger elapsed-time context that a single fast-moving hand cannot show by itself.

The instruction manual says the small white divisions represent tenths of a second. Breguet’s launch material describes measurement in twentieths, and its 2010 announcement says, “At each leap, the central hand indicates the 20th of a second, the smallest time division to be measured by a serial mechanical caliber.” For reading the printed scale as instructed to the wearer, use the manual’s tenths-of-a-second markings rather than treating each visible division as a separate twentieth.
This differs from the familiar one-minute chronograph hand: the Type XXII travels around the dial twice as quickly, with an additional half-minute passage to track. The display offers finer stated timing resolution, but requires the reader to account for the 30-second lap and minute totalizer together.

How the flyback chronograph works
The flyback function lets you begin a fresh timing interval without first stopping the chronograph. With the chronograph running, press the lower pusher. The chronograph hands return to zero and begin timing again when you release the pusher. For a single interval, stop the chronograph with the appropriate pusher, read the result, then reset it; for consecutive intervals, flyback removes the separate stop-reset-start sequence.
How to use the second time zone, date and 24-hour display
The launch configuration provides a local/time-zone hour hand that can be advanced or retarded in one-hour jumps. The adjustment changes the time-zone display without changing reference time. The date follows the time-zone time, while the 24-hour indicator is linked to reference time. They therefore serve different roles; the 24-hour display is not simply another indicator for the adjustable local hour.

The official Breguet 3880 instruction manual identifies four crown states or positions: screwed in, manual winding, time-zone/date correction and reference-time setting. Use the manual’s dial labels and illustrations to identify the correct crown position and controls on the particular watch, rather than assuming the time-zone and reference-time hands adjust together.

What the 2010 launch context establishes
Swatch Group’s archive places the Type XXII launch in 2010, on the 50th anniversary of the first deliveries of Type XX watches designed for the French naval air arm in the 1950s. This situates the model in the Type XX lineage while distinguishing its defining technical feature: a 10 Hz mechanical chronograph with a 30-second central hand.
The launch archive lists a 44 mm steel case and 10 bar/100 m resistance. The manual’s screwed-crown condition matters in practice: a rating alone does not establish suitability for every kind of water activity.
