Choose the Chronomat if you want an all-purpose sports watch with Breitling’s rider-tab and Rouleaux design language, and especially if you want a chronograph. Choose the Superocean if dive-watch styling and water use come first. The two references compared below are the Super Chronomat B01 44 and the Superocean Automatic 42. Their specifications describe those references only, not every model in either collection.

Two different lineages
Chronomat: a 1984 sports watch with a Frecce Tricolori origin
Breitling says the Frecce Tricolori, the Italian air force aerobatic team, commissioned the design, and that the model was launched publicly as the Chronomat in 1984. The brand presents the rider tabs, the easy-grip “onion” crown and the Rouleaux bracelet as continuing signatures of the collection. That is why the Chronomat reads as a sports watch with a defined visual identity rather than a single-purpose tool.
Superocean: a dive-watch line dating to 1957
Breitling’s Superocean history page dates the launch to 1957 and describes two original approaches: a time-only diver and a chronograph. The brand says both early watches were water resistant to 200 m. The Superocean’s heritage is therefore rooted in diving from the start, and its current references carry that identity forward.

Size and how it wears
The Chronomat range reaches down to 32 mm, the smallest size either collection lists. The Superocean range starts at 36 mm. The two example references differ by 2 mm in diameter, with the Superocean Automatic 42 the smaller of the pair. The checked sources do not give lug-to-lug length, case thickness or weight, so this is a diameter comparison only. Diameter alone does not show how a watch sits on the wrist, and the same figure can wear quite differently depending on lug shape and thickness.
Movement, power reserve and water resistance
Super Chronomat B01 44
Breitling’s product page states: “The Super Chronomat B01 44 is powered by the Breitling Manufacture Calibre 01, a COSC-certified chronometer.” It is an automatic chronograph, so the chronograph function and the longer power reserve are both features of this reference rather than of the Chronomat name as a whole.

Superocean Automatic 42
This reference is a time-only automatic running on the Breitling 17 movement. Breitling’s US product page states: “It’s water resistant to 300 m (1000 ft), as well as being shock-, sand- and saltwater-resistant.” The higher rating on this reference is the main functional difference between the two examples. The power reserve is shorter than the Chronomat example’s.
Price and availability
The prices above are dated listings, not stable market values. The Chronomat figure appeared on a Breitling product page checked in October 2026, and the Superocean figure on Breitling’s US page on the same date. The Superocean price excludes sales tax, while the Chronomat listing does not make its tax treatment clear in the sources checked. Before comparing the two, confirm the currency, the market, whether tax is included, and the exact reference on the brand’s site for your country. A gap of roughly USD 4,950 between the two listings should be read with those caveats in mind.

Which one to choose
- Choose the Chronomat if you want a chronograph, a collection with a wider size range down to 32 mm, or a sports-watch identity built around rider tabs and the Rouleaux bracelet.
- Choose the Superocean if dive-watch styling is the priority, if you want the higher 300 m rating on the reference you are considering, or if a 42 mm case suits your wrist better.
Do not assume that every Chronomat is a chronograph or that every Superocean shares the same water resistance. Both statements hold only for the references discussed here.

- Check the water resistance, movement and power reserve listed for that specific reference.
- Compare prices only in the same currency and with the same tax treatment, and note the date of each listing.
- Try the watch on if you can, comparing the 42 mm and 44 mm cases on your own wrist.
- Buy from an authorized dealer or a reputable seller, and confirm the warranty, condition, and return terms before paying.
Collection sizes and configurations can change, so verify the current range on Breitling’s collection pages at the time you shop.
