For a small wrist, measure in two places, then check one dimension of the watch itself. Wrist circumference gives a broad starting range for case diameter. Flat wrist width shows whether the lugs, the horns that curve past the case, will sit on your wrist or hang over its edges. Thickness, case shape and strap fit then decide whether the watch feels right. No single diameter suits every small wrist, so treat published ranges as starting points rather than rules.
Why circumference alone is not enough
Circumference and width answer different questions. Circumference places you in broad size guidance. Longines’ official guide on choosing a watch by wrist size classifies a wrist under about 16 cm (6.3 inches) as small and suggests case diameters of 32–36 mm for that category. Width across the wrist shows whether a particular case’s lugs fit within the flat top of your wrist. Wrists of the same circumference can be flatter or rounder, so a 34 mm watch that sits well on one wearer can overhang on another.
Victorinox’s official guide makes the same point directly: “Fit is more than diameter. Keep the lug-to-lug measurement at or below your wrist width for comfort and proportion.” The two measurements are complementary. Use circumference for the shortlist and width for the final check.
How to measure your wrist
- Measure circumference. Wrap a soft tape snugly but comfortably around the wrist where the watch will sit. Longines advises the narrowest point, while Victorinox advises the spot just behind the wrist bone. The two sources name different places, so measure where the watch will actually sit and note which spot you used. Record the result in centimetres and inches.
- Use a paper strip if you have no tape. Longines suggests wrapping a strip of paper around the wrist, marking where it overlaps, and measuring the strip with a ruler.
- Measure wrist width. Garmin’s Watch Size Selection Guide places this measurement 2.5 cm above the wrist bone. Lay a flat ruler or tape straight across the flat top of the wrist and record the width in millimetres.
Shortlist by circumference first
The table below collects the figures from the brand and retailer guides reviewed for this article. These are guidelines, not a controlled study of wrist sizes, and none of them establishes one ideal size for all small wrists. The Longines guide does not state a publication date on the page reviewed.

Check whether the lugs overhang
Lug-to-lug is the distance from the tip of the top lug to the tip of the bottom lug. Compare it with your flat wrist width. If the lugs extend past the flat portion, the case edges can hang over the sides of the wrist and the watch will not sit flat. Kensington Watches’ guide adds that long lugs can lift the case and push the strap into an awkward angle.
Here is an illustration with made-up numbers. Suppose your flat wrist width measures 45 mm. A watch with a 42 mm lug-to-lug passes the Victorinox check. A watch with a 50 mm lug-to-lug does not, even if both are listed at 36 mm in diameter. The lug shape also changes how a stated diameter wears. Kensington contrasts long straight lugs with short curved ones, which can make the same diameter sit very differently.

Thickness, case shape and style
Thickness affects cuff clearance and perceived bulk. A thick case can look larger than a slimmer one of greater diameter, and it may not slide under a shirt cuff. Longines suggests 7–9 mm for small wrists. Kensington notes that dress watches are commonly slimmer than dive watches, and that thickness shapes how large a watch looks.
These ranges are guidelines. Kensington states that its ranges are starting points and that a deliberately oversized watch can be an intentional style choice. A discreet dress watch, a field watch and a diver call for different priorities, so choose the style first and then test it against your measurements.

Match the strap or bracelet
Strap width should match the watch’s lug width, and strap length should fasten comfortably on your wrist. Victorinox’s guide recommends checking both for the specific watch. Longines’ 16–18 mm strap-width range for small wrists is a general figure, so the lug width printed in the watch’s specifications is the number to trust. Buy a replacement strap only after you know that lug width and the length you need.

- Circumference: does the diameter fall in the 32–36 mm starting range for small wrists?
- Lug-to-lug against wrist width: is lug-to-lug at or below your flat width? If not, the lugs will likely overhang.
- Lug shape: do long straight lugs lift the case on your wrist? Short or curved lugs may sit more closely.
- Thickness: does the case fit under a cuff and look proportionate for the style you want?
- Strap or bracelet: does the lug width match the strap width, and can the strap or bracelet adjust to your wrist?
If a watch fails the lug check but suits your circumference and style, look for a model with shorter lugs rather than forcing the wrist to accept it. If a watch passes the lug check but feels too heavy or thick, a slimmer model with the same diameter may be the better choice.

A soft tape measure and a flat ruler are enough for both measurements. If you cannot find a tape, the paper-strip method described above gives a usable circumference. For the wrist width, a rigid ruler is more accurate than a flexible tape laid across a curved surface.
