Choose the Junghans max bill Automatic Bauhaus (reference 27/4308.02) if you prefer an automatic movement and a lower listed price. Neither is the better watch in general. The manufacturer specifications and listed prices below were checked on 9 October 2026, and they describe the watches on paper rather than in hands-on testing.

Winding: hand-wound or automatic
This is the difference you will notice every day. The NOMOS 1101 runs on the in-house, hand-wound DUW 4401, so you wind the crown yourself to keep it running. The Junghans uses the automatic J800.1, which winds from your wrist movement while you wear it.

The practical consequence depends on how you wear the watch. An automatic worn daily rarely needs attention. A hand-wound watch asks for a short daily ritual, which some buyers enjoy and others find tedious. Both listed power reserves (up to 42 hours for NOMOS, up to 38 hours for Junghans) mean either watch will stop if it sits unworn for longer than its reserve. The Junghans stops in the same way a day or two after it is taken off, so a rotation of several watches will affect both equally.
Size and wrist fit
On paper, the NOMOS is the slimmer and slightly smaller watch. Its 37.0 mm diameter and 7.7 mm height compare with 38.0 mm and 10.0 mm for the Junghans. The 2.3 mm difference in height is the one most wearers will feel, because it affects how the case sits under a shirt cuff and how it rests on the wrist.
- Measure lug-to-lug before deciding. NOMOS lists 43.6 mm. The cited Junghans sources do not state a lug-to-lug figure, so compare it on your own wrist or with a retailer’s measurement.
- Do not rely on diameter alone. A 1 mm difference in diameter matters less than lug length and curvature.
- Consider your wrist width. Narrow wrists usually feel a 38 mm case with longer lugs more than a 37 mm case with shorter ones.
Power reserve and movement
NOMOS lists up to 42 hours of power reserve for the DUW 4401, which has 23 jewels. Junghans lists up to 38 hours for the J800.1. These are manufacturer figures, not results from a comparative test, and they describe the maximum reserve under the conditions each company uses. The four-hour gap is useful for a weekend away but will not change how you use either watch day to day.
Dial and features
The NOMOS 1101 is the more functional dial of the two. Its large date and power-reserve indicator appear in the same display, so you can check how much running time remains without opening the caseback or winding the watch. The listed Junghans reference has a date function only, which means a cleaner dial but no reserve indicator.
Junghans presents the red accents on the Bauhaus line as a reference to the red doors of the Bauhaus building. This is Junghans’s own design explanation as stated on its German product page and catalogue, not an independent confirmation of historical influence.

Case, crystal and water resistance
Both watches list 5 atm (NOMOS) or 5 bar (Junghans) water resistance. Those ratings are the same in practice and do not establish that either watch is suitable for swimming or diving. Check each manufacturer’s guidance on intended use before wearing either in water. Both crystals are sapphire: NOMOS lists a domed sapphire crystal and a sapphire caseback, and Junghans lists a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal.
Straps and strap changes
NOMOS specifies an 18 mm lug width and quick-change spring bars, which makes a strap change straightforward if you buy a compatible aftermarket strap. The cited NOMOS page confirms the lug width and spring-bar system, but it does not name a particular compatible strap. The Junghans uses a black leather strap on the black PVD variant, and its 2026 catalogue describes that strap as quick-release. The lug width is not stated in the sources reviewed.
Price: what the listings show and do not show
NOMOS lists EUR 3,440 on its French-language storefront. Junghans lists EUR 1,645 including German VAT on its German storefront. These listings come from two storefronts in different regions, so they are not a like-for-like price comparison. Retail prices, currency conversions, import costs and tax treatment will vary by country, and both prices may change. Before you buy, check the local price from an authorised retailer, plus warranty and returns terms, because those can differ more than the sticker price suggests.

Which one to buy
- Choose the NOMOS Metro Date Power Reserve 1101 if you want hand-winding, a 7.7 mm case height, or a large date with a power-reserve display, and you can accept the higher listed price.
- Choose the Junghans max bill Automatic Bauhaus 27/4308.02 if you prefer an automatic movement, want a date without the reserve indicator, or want the black PVD look at the lower listed German price.
- Choose by wrist fit if the specifications leave you undecided. The 10.0 mm height of the Junghans is the most likely source of discomfort, and the lug-to-lug measurement is the best test for either watch.
This comparison relies on manufacturer specifications and listed prices. It does not include hands-on testing, independent accuracy checks, durability data, service costs or resale values, and no independent long-term comparison of these exact references was located.
