Its 406.040 MHz signal is the satellite-alert channel; its 121.5 MHz signal is for local homing, not satellite detection. On paper, its unusual capability comes with substantial size and battery-readiness considerations.
How does the Emergency II beacon work?
Breitling specifies the Emergency II transmitter as a COSPAS-SARSAT PLB Category 2 beacon operating on 406.040 MHz and 121.5 MHz. The frequencies serve different purposes: the digital 406 MHz transmission is the satellite-alert component, while the analog 121.5 MHz signal can help personnel equipped with suitable receiving radios home in locally. NOAA SARSAT says 121.5 MHz is no longer detected by Cospas-Sarsat satellites; the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center dates the end of satellite processing of 121.5/243 MHz beacons to 1 February 2009.
| Beacon signal | Role | Breitling-stated minimum output |
|---|---|---|
| 406.040 MHz | Digital distress alert detected by the satellite system | 3.2 W |
| 121.5 MHz | Analog local homing signal for personnel with suitable receiving equipment; not detected by Cospas-Sarsat satellites | 30 mW |
These frequency, power, and category figures are Breitling’s published specifications, not independent signal tests. NOAA explains that 406 MHz beacons can transmit beacon and owner information, and that registration can give search-and-rescue forces useful information. Do not assume an individual watch is registered or ready to transmit: check its status and follow the applicable registration and safety procedures for your location and activity. Breitling’s technical data does not establish an individual unit’s registration status or its actual signal performance.
What are the transmitter’s battery and temperature specifications?
Breitling specifies transmitter autonomy of at least 18 hours at −20°C and at least 24 hours at +20°C, with a beacon operating range of −20°C to +55°C. These are manufacturer figures under the stated temperatures, not independent endurance results or a guarantee for a particular watch, especially a used one.

| Transmitter specification | Breitling-stated value |
|---|---|
| Autonomy at −20°C | At least 18 hours |
| Autonomy at +20°C | At least 24 hours |
| Beacon operating temperature | −20°C to +55°C |
| Beacon battery | 4.2 V, 1.1 Ah Li-ion |
| Watch battery | 1.5 V silver-oxide |
The transmitter and watch use different batteries, so battery condition and service documentation matter when evaluating a particular example. The listed autonomy is nominal specification data; it does not show that a specific watch has a healthy battery or that its beacon has been maintained. Breitling’s published technical specifications do not establish an individual unit’s battery condition or a current model-specific service interval.
How large is the Breitling Emergency II?
Breitling lists a 51 mm titanium case and a 140 g transmitter-watch weight without strap. Those dimensions make this a substantial watch; they are fit considerations, not proof that it will be comfortable on every wrist. Try the exact configuration on if possible, since the strap or bracelet changes the complete watch’s feel and weight.

The 5-bar rating is a stated water-resistance specification, not a blanket recommendation for every water activity. Breitling lists Volcano black, Cobra yellow, and Intrepid orange dial variants, with rubber Diver Pro III or titanium Professional strap/bracelet options. Confirm the exact reference and configuration rather than assuming every market has every variant. Breitling’s technical data page lists these specifications.
What does Caliber 76 do?
The watch uses Breitling Caliber 76, a thermocompensated SuperQuartz movement that Breitling says is COSC chronometer-certified. It combines analog and LCD digital time displays with practical timing and travel functions:

- 12- or 24-hour display
- 1/100th-second chronograph and timer

- Multilingual calendar
- Battery end-of-life indication
This combination makes the Emergency II more than a beacon mounted in a watch: the published functions cover everyday timekeeping and timing needs too. The certification and function list are Breitling’s specifications; they do not establish independent accuracy measurements for a particular example.
Is the Breitling Emergency II worth it?
It is a compelling proposition for a buyer specifically seeking a wristwatch that combines multifunction quartz timekeeping with a dual-frequency distress transmitter. Its distinctive value is the integration, not a demonstrated advantage over dedicated safety equipment: the available specifications do not establish comparative rescue performance, comfort, or reliability.

It is a less straightforward choice if you want a compact daily watch, need assured readiness from a used unit without service records, or are considering it as your only required emergency beacon. The 51 mm case, separate watch and transmitter batteries, and the need to verify beacon condition and registration are meaningful ownership considerations.

- Exact reference and configuration: Confirm the model reference, dial, and whether it has a rubber strap or titanium bracelet.
- Condition and ownership: Ask for proof of ownership and the complete service history.
- Battery and beacon records: Request documentation for watch and transmitter battery/service work, plus any applicable charging and self-test history for that unit.
- Readiness and registration: Verify the beacon’s status and registration through the appropriate channel for your location; do not infer either from the watch’s appearance or advertised specifications.
- Expert confirmation: Have the condition and beacon servicing confirmed by Breitling or an authorized service channel.
- Local price: Compare the price for the correct reference and market. Breitling’s regional pages and currency displays are market-specific; a price shown for Malaysia, for example, is not a universal price or a reliable current quote for another country.
- Role in your safety plan: Check the rules and equipment requirements that apply to your activity, and treat this watch as additional equipment unless the responsible authority explicitly says otherwise.
Breitling’s regional product page describes the watch as “The world’s first wristwatch with a dual frequency locator beacon.” That is the manufacturer’s product claim, not an independently established finding here. The page is a Malaysia-region product listing, so its models or displayed prices should not be generalized to other markets.
