The Breitling Emergency II combines a wristwatch with a manually activated distress beacon that transmits on 406.040 MHz and 121.5 MHz. The two signals serve different purposes: 406 MHz alerts the satellite-based Cospas-Sarsat system, while 121.5 MHz helps rescuers home in when they are nearby. That gives the beacon access to a global satellite alert network—not a guarantee of detection, a GPS position, or a rescue.
Breitling lists the Emergency II as a COSPAS-SARSAT PLB Category 2. Its published specifications explain the hardware, but they are not independent field-test results. Before relying on one, verify the exact watch and beacon, its registration and operating condition, and the current instructions for its reference.
What the Emergency II beacon does
Breitling lists two transmit frequencies: 406.040 MHz and 121.5 MHz. They are not redundant channels with the same job. The 406 MHz transmission carries a digital distress message that satellites can detect; the lower-power 121.5 MHz signal is for local homing by rescue forces once they are in the vicinity.
NOAA SARSAT explains that satellites have not been able to detect 121.5 MHz signals since 2009. Its guidance says, “406 MHz is the only frequency satellites can pick up in the event of a distress activation.” In practice, 121.5 MHz does not replace the satellite alert: it can help a search team locate the beacon at close range after the alert has brought rescuers toward the search area. Breitling calls the Emergency a wristwatch with a dual-frequency locator beacon and says the original launched in 1995. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not proof of independent performance for a particular Emergency II. Breitling Emergency collection
What “global” means—and what it does not
Cospas-Sarsat uses satellites to detect 406 MHz distress signals across the Earth, including polar regions. NOAA describes the U.S. SARSAT system as using LEOSAR, GEOSAR and MEOSAR satellites. That network-level reach is why a 406 MHz beacon can be described as having global satellite-alert capability. It does not establish guaranteed reception at every location, a particular response time, or that a rescue will follow every activation. NOAA SARSAT: Frequently Asked Questions

Do not assume the watch sends GPS coordinates
Some 406 MHz beacon models have GPS receivers and can include GPS-derived location in their digital message. The sources available here do not establish that the Emergency II has a GPS receiver. Do not assume it sends coordinates, offers a particular location accuracy, or performs like a GPS-equipped PLB without documentation for the exact watch reference.

These figures describe the published transmitter specification under the stated temperatures; they should not be read as a guarantee of actual endurance for a used or damaged watch. See Breitling Emergency technical data.
Registration, testing and safe use
Register the beacon for the country where it is used
NOAA says that in the United States, 406 MHz beacon registration is free. The registration information is associated with the beacon’s unique identification number and can help authorities identify the owner, understand the situation and resolve false alerts. Keep registration details current and check them periodically. Outside the U.S., confirm the correct national registry and the specific coding and registration steps for the watch rather than assuming the U.S. process applies. NOAA SARSAT FAQ

Do not activate it as a casual test
NOAA recommends using the beacon’s self-test feature or an authorized dealer or test facility, and following the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not activate a 406 MHz beacon unless facing grave and imminent danger: a non-distress alert can divert search-and-rescue resources. If the beacon is accidentally activated, contact the appropriate rescue coordination center promptly and follow current local-authority directions. NOAA SARSAT beacon guidance
The specific Emergency II antenna deployment and activation procedure is not established by generic PLB guidance. Consult the current Breitling manual and service guidance for the exact reference; do not improvise from instructions for another beacon.

What else the watch offers
Beyond the beacon, Breitling lists a Caliber 76 thermocompensated SuperQuartz movement certified by COSC, analog and LCD digital displays, a 1/100-second chronograph, timer, second time zone, multilingual calendar and battery end-of-life indicator. The stated watch battery is a 1.5 V silver-oxide cell.
The published case specification is titanium, 51 mm in diameter, with 5-bar water resistance and sapphire crystal treated for glare resistance on both sides. Breitling lists black, yellow and orange dial options, with rubber or titanium bracelet options. The transmitter-watch weighs 140 g without a strap. Check the exact reference and condition before applying any of these specifications to a particular pre-owned or new listing; the weight figure is specifically without the strap. How it compares with the decision to carry a dedicated PLB
The Emergency II’s appeal is the integration of a manually activated 406 MHz beacon into a watch with everyday timekeeping and chronograph functions. A dedicated PLB is a separate portable device intended for individuals in remote areas, as NOAA describes; it may be a more suitable choice for someone prioritizing a standalone rescue beacon. The available specifications do not support declaring one category universally safer or more effective.
For either option, compare the specific model on the points that affect your use: whether it transmits a GPS/GNSS-derived position, its homing signal, registration and beacon identification process, activation and self-test controls, published endurance and temperature limits, and whether its size and form factor suit the trip. Verify those details in the manufacturer documentation for the exact device. NOAA’s PLB guidance and FAQ explain the general beacon system; Breitling publishes the Emergency II’s watch-specific figures at the technical-data page.

What to verify before relying on an Emergency II
- Confirm the exact reference and that the beacon, not just the watch functions, is present and in serviceable condition.
- Check the current Breitling manual and service requirements for that reference, including the approved self-test and activation procedure.
- Confirm how the beacon is coded and registered in the country where you will use it, and keep the registration information current.
- Do not count on GPS coordinates unless documentation for that precise reference confirms GPS hardware and explains the location data it transmits.
- Treat Breitling’s autonomy and operating-temperature figures as published specifications, not independently verified results for the individual watch.
