The Breitling Navitimer 8 B01 is a 43 mm automatic chronograph that borrows its design language from Breitling’s aviation dashboard instruments. Its key difference from the traditional Navitimer is practical and visual: it has a rotating bezel, but not the circular flight-computer slide rule. That makes for a cleaner dial, while giving up the calculations the classic bezel enables.
What the Navitimer 8 B01 is—and what it isn’t
The Navitimer name combines “navigation” and “timer.” Breitling traces the model to 1952, when it created a watch for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). The original AOPA version did not carry Breitling branding; the company says the watch reached the public under its own name in late 1955. Breitling’s Navitimer history provides that origin story.
The Navitimer 8 B01 is not simply a conventional Navitimer with a different label. Its design refers to Breitling’s “8” dashboard instruments: Hodinkee’s 2018 hands-on account points to the typography, numerals, triangles, minute-track ticks, and coin-edge bezel. The design replaces the traditional Navitimer’s flight-computer scales with a cleaner dial. Hodinkee’s hands-on report describes the design and configurations.
The distinction matters when choosing between them. The Navitimer 8 B01’s rotating bezel is not the circular slide rule found on traditional Navitimers, so it does not offer that bezel’s flight-computer calculations. A week-on-the-wrist reviewer found the simpler dial easier to read than the traditional Navitimer’s busier display, while also describing the watch as large on the wrist. Those are that reviewer’s impressions, not a universal fit or legibility guarantee. The review gives the wrist observations.

These figures describe the model as covered in the cited articles; an individual listing should be checked against its exact reference and configuration. The hands-on writer handled samples with fixed bezels and blocked movements, and explicitly could not assess bezel or chronograph action. That account therefore supports design and specification details, not an operating test of those functions.
How it wears and reads
The case measures 43 mm across and 13.97 mm thick according to Hodinkee’s week-on-the-wrist review. That reviewer characterized the watch as large and heavy on bracelet, and found the cleaner dial more immediately legible than the traditional Navitimer. If wrist presence is a concern, those observations are a reason to try the specific watch on rather than infer comfort from diameter alone.

The dial’s simpler layout is a trade-off, not an across-the-board upgrade: it reduces visual density, but removes the traditional Navitimer’s slide-rule function. The B01 movement and three-counter chronograph remain central to the watch, while the bezel’s aviation-instrument styling does not make it a substitute for a flight-computer bezel.
Navitimer 8 B01 price: launch figure versus current context
Time and Watches reported a CHF 7,100 launch price in 2018 for a steel Navitimer 8 B01 on leather. This is a launch-era Swiss-franc price for that configuration, not a current retail quote or a pre-owned valuation. The 2018 collection overview gives the launch context.

Breitling’s US catalog, accessed October 7, 2026, lists current Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 models at USD 10,300. Those are other, current collection models—not the historical Navitimer 8 B01—so the figure is context for the broader line, not a price for this watch. Breitling’s US Navitimer catalog shows the current collection.
A reliable current asking-price range for the exact Navitimer 8 B01 by geography, condition, completeness, service history, and reference is not established here. Rather than treating either cited figure as a resale guide, compare listings that match the precise reference and condition.

Is the Navitimer 8 B01 worth buying?
It is most compelling for someone who wants a Breitling B01 chronograph with aviation-instrument styling and a less crowded dial than the traditional Navitimer. It is less suitable for a buyer who specifically wants the classic Navitimer’s circular flight-computer slide rule. The 43 mm case and reviewer-reported heft on bracelet also make wrist fit an important part of the decision.
For a pre-owned example, compare like with like rather than relying on the model name alone. Check the exact reference, case material, bracelet or strap, condition, and service history; confirm whether box and papers are included and understand the seller’s return terms. Configuration varies, so photographs and listing text should agree with the actual watch.
