The Breitling Sprint 2010 has a credible vintage-chronograph story, but the old “value play” label is not enough to establish what one is worth today. Breitling dates the Sprint’s introduction to 1967; the surviving price references are historical examples, not current market evidence. Buyers should judge each watch by its originality, condition, function, service record and comparable recent sales.
What the Breitling Sprint 2010 is
Breitling says it introduced the Sprint alongside the Top Time in 1967. The brand describes the rotating bezel as a way to track specific times, such as departures, and the model’s design as modern, with bold, exotic dials. One popular variation, the Surfboard, has a colorful horizontal shape across the dial. Breitling’s history of the Top Time and Sprint presents this as the model’s original design context.
Representative reference 2010 specifications
The cited listings describe individual watches, not a definitive specification covering every Sprint 2010. Both identify a manual-wind Valjoux 7733 chronograph movement, while case measurements and other details should be read in the context of each particular example.
| Listing | Specifications described for that example | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Specialist listing | Valjoux 7733 manual-wind movement; case listed as 40 × 48 mm, excluding the crown; aluminum rotating bezel; acrylic crystal; ivory-silver-and-black dial. | The listing’s serial-number dating claim applies to that watch. Its seller supplies the configuration and condition description. |
| HODINKEE Shop sold listing | Stainless-steel case listed as 40 mm in diameter and 12 mm thick; acrylic crystal; tritium lume; Valjoux 7733 manual-wind movement. | These are the listed example’s details. Vintage watches may have been repaired or had parts replaced, so the individual watch needs inspection. |
The 40 × 48 mm listing and the 40 mm listing are not necessarily contradictory: the former gives two dimensions and specifies that the crown is excluded, while the latter identifies a 40 mm case diameter and separately gives thickness. Ask sellers how measurements were taken rather than treating the numbers as directly interchangeable. Dial variations also matter when comparing examples.

Does “a value play” still fit?
Only as historical editorial framing—not as a conclusion about today’s market. The Fratello article associated with the original title says the Sprint 2010 was marketed as an entry-level watch when introduced in 1967. When that article was written, it described the model as a possible opportunity if a price of roughly $3,000 seemed attractive. That was commentary at the time, not a current appraisal or a market statistic. Read the Fratello article.
HODINKEE’s sold-listing page displayed $3,500 for one reference 2010. That is a historical asking/listing observation; it is not evidence of the completed transaction price or of current value. The listing does not establish a broader market price.

No reference-specific current sales dataset, named market statistic or standardized valuation is established here. To assess a present-day asking price, compare recent completed sales of genuinely similar watches—matching condition, originality, dial configuration and service status. Without that comparison, neither historical figure should be used as current price guidance.
What to check before buying
Seller descriptions are claims about individual watches, not proof that a watch is original, correctly serviced or in the condition described. Ask for clear photographs, movement and case details, and service documentation; consider an inspection by a qualified watchmaker. Use these comparison points:
Rank #3
- Breitling Avenger Chronograph Automatic Blue Dial Men's Watch A13317101C1X1
- Dial and originality: Examine dial condition and whether the visible components appear consistent with the watch’s configuration. Account for the fact that Sprint dials vary.
- Case: Look for sharpness and signs of polishing. Compare dimensions only after confirming the seller’s measurement convention.
- Bezel: Check its condition and whether it rotates and operates as expected.
- Chronograph: Confirm that it starts, stops and resets properly; have a qualified watchmaker assess function if you cannot verify it confidently.
- Service and provenance: Request service history and supporting records, and distinguish documented facts from a seller’s account.
- Price: Compare the asking price with recent completed sales of comparable examples, not just old articles or listings.
What Breitling’s archive extract can—and cannot—show
Breitling offers an Extract from the Archives for eligible watches dating from 1946 to 1979, a period that includes the Sprint’s 1967 introduction. The UK archive page displayed a fee of GBP 130 and an evaluation time of up to one month when described; both can change. Check Breitling’s archive service page for current terms.
Breitling says the extract is prepared from information supplied by the applicant and without physical inspection. Under the brand’s terms, it is not an authenticity certificate, warranty, proof of ownership or confirmation of the watch’s current condition. Treat it as a historical-record service, not a substitute for an independent assessment.
