The Seiko Presage SPB085 is a mechanical dress watch whose defining feature is its hand-finished dial: layered black Urushi lacquer, red-toned Byakudan-nuri subdials and a gilt Maki-e crescent create a scene Seiko says evokes the moon and sky just before dawn. Seiko announced 2,000 pieces in 2018; the model pairs that craft with its 6R21 automatic movement and a 40.5 mm steel case.
What makes the SPB085’s dial distinctive?
The dial brings together three Japanese lacquer techniques rather than relying on a printed image or a simple color treatment. Seiko attributes the work to the studio of Urushi master Isshu Tamura in the Hokuriku region of Honshu, where the processes are completed by hand.
Urushi: the deep black foundation
Seiko describes the base as hand-painted with Urushi lacquer, then dried and polished. The process is repeated in layers until the desired depth is achieved, giving the dial its dark, lustrous ground.
Byakudan-nuri: the red-toned subdials
For the subdials, fine metallic powder is bound with another Urushi layer. Translucent red-tinged lacquer is applied over it repeatedly, with drying and polishing between applications. The result is a reflective, reddish surface set against the black base.

Maki-e: the crescent power-reserve display
The crescent-shaped power-reserve indicator uses Urushi as an adhesive for fine gilt-colored powder. Seiko says the powder is distributed and finished by hand, producing the granular gold effect.
Seiko’s 2018 launch release describes Byakudan-nuri as a centuries-old decorative technique whose complex craftsmanship was reserved for high-status places and objects, including temples, shrines and shogun armor. That is the manufacturer’s historical characterization; the dial’s appeal here is the way the layered techniques combine into a moon-at-dawn composition.
How does it wear on paper?
The SPB085 has a 40.5 mm stainless-steel case and is 12.8 mm thick, according to Seiko’s product specification page. Its proportions are substantial for a dress-oriented watch, while the 20 mm lug spacing and crocodile-leather strap provide conventional strap dimensions. Seiko specifies 10 bar water resistance.

What movement and functions does it have?
Seiko equips the SPB085 with caliber 6R21, an automatic movement that can also be wound by hand. Seiko lists 29 jewels and an approximate 45-hour power reserve. Its official India product page states precision of +25 to −15 seconds per day; that is a manufacturer specification, not an independent timing-test result.

The display includes a date hand, a day hand, a day/date display, and the crescent-shaped power-reserve indicator. The movement also has a stop-seconds function, which halts the seconds hand when setting the time.

Seiko announced a production quantity of 2,000 pieces in 2018. The company introduced the watch in November that year and said it would be available at selected outlets from early December. Those are launch-era details, not confirmation of current stock.
Seiko’s November 2018 press release gave an approximate recommended European retail price of €2,500. That figure is historical launch pricing, not a current asking price or evidence of what a particular watch has sold for. The cited manufacturer materials do not establish today’s market value or availability.
What should buyers know about a handcrafted dial?
Seiko cautions that slight color differences and minute distortions may appear in handcrafted Urushi dials, and says no two are exactly alike. Those variations are described by the manufacturer as part of the handcraft; on a pre-owned example, assess the individual watch and its documentation rather than treating this general note as authentication guidance.
